CHARACTER: fairytaildream.boards.net/thread/368/southern-wolves-natalie-chevalier?page=1&scrollTo=2097LEVEL: 3 COST: 6000 STAT ALLOCATION: +1 Attack, +2 Heal, +1 Stamina ABILITY NAME: Flicker ABILITY DESCRIPTION: Flicker is a simple spell. From either her hand or the tip of her staff (used for better aiming), a shot of starlight is released. It is a standard projectile and looks like a teal, sparkling flame. Hits from this ability can cause painful burns that act as damage over time. ABILITY TYPE: Magic Attack + Condition ABILITY NAME: Seal of the Stars ABILITY DESCRIPTION: With herself, or rather her staff at the center, Natalie can conjure up a teal seal on the ground. It looks like a circle filled with stars, each glowing with slightly different intensity. Those standing within have negative status effects expelled from them. Being subjected to this feels like they are being burnt away. Burning a lot of effects at once or especially strong ones can be quite painful. ABILITY TYPE: Mass Dispel ADDENDUM: I was told that I have to do some kind of update. Since levelling up would cause an edit anyway, I thought it might be best to add the light changes here to make it easier on the mods. If you want me to though, I can just go to the other place as well. But the changes would simply be: - Specialty
- Enhancement
- Starlight Brand

“Didn’t you say you were a man once? In that case, just go with what you would like to hear,” she replied, shrugging. It was an odd question to ask, especially by someone who was groping himself like that. It was kind of insensitive in and of itself, but she did not speak out. The other would have to find out herself. Telling stubborn people things seldom led to them learning. They needed to fall flat on their face to understand. Even that could fail, though. The living example was still trying to make a pass at her here, after all.
She leaned back, thinking a bit on how to elaborate on that. He probably would still not get it from that alone. “If you have a very aggressive man, you sometimes need to be forceful in your rejection. If it is a timid lass, you should be gentle. The secret to all communication is empathy, to understand how the other is feeling so that you can talk to them on the same level. Your words will not reach them, otherwise, and they might just think you hard to get. Especially when you run around touching yourself. I don’t think you will be able to let anyone down as a woman if you do not learn what it means to be one to begin with.”

It was not conclusive evidence that she was being presented here. Yes, this trait mage being unable to change certain things would work for the given story, but that could have any number of reasons. While Natalie did not know too much about that type and trade, she’d just figured that gender would be one of those things hard to switch around. Otherwise, people would probably switch it up every now and then to enable certain pairings and the like to work better. In fact, it could probably have had a profound effect on society and gender roles in general. After all, most gender would simply be ‘choice’, rather than something people had to accept. Truly, that would have had ramifications.
Yet, they were not here to examine that. Especially since, apparently, it had not worked. “Or maybe he did not want to change it. Men do like them big, after all.” A dig at no one in particular, really. Then again, that person, if he truly had started out as one, had probably been appreciative of busts. Fairly likely, even. “I can imagine that you do not exactly appreciate what is. But if you cannot change it, you probably should. If you find a cure one day, all the better. Rejecting what is though, that will not help you. As I always say, sometimes it is simply best to forget the past. Especially if it somehow makes your present worse. It seems like life is still worth living to you, after all.”

Natalie would let the other think, both aloud and quiet, without disturbance. In many ways, she felt like this woman had more experience in matters such as this. Being a healer, she was often not really involved in the making of plans, but rather was told how they would proceed for one reason or another. It was just natural, really. Most of the time she did not have a lot of useful insight anyway. This one was not much different. While her medical expertise would be useful eventually – maybe – she just did not know how to best track down the patient. Hence, she would leave that to the pros. Or, in absence of any of those, to enthusiastic amateurs.
What Kasumi said made sense. She was inclined to believe it. “Right. It is probably best to think of this as geographical triage. First look for him where he would end up in his worst state, then where he would go in case he is not injured.” Granted, that was not strictly speaking what triage was. But close enough, really. They did not have anything better to go on, so this was probably their best bet. Natalie briefly looked up, towards the cliffs they had just come down on, then towards the woods. Recalling what scant knowledge she had of the area, the healer would point ahead and slightly to the right. “That should be the general direction. Fortunately, the cave should be in the basin’s opposite wall, so we cannot truly miss it.” They could only come short or end up too far towards the North. Either of those might cost them time, but they would not get lost

“Ah, well,” she said, meaninglessly, as she detached fully from the machine. Who knew? It could have been something amazing or useful. Yet, it had turned out to be just another slightly pointless contraption. Once upon a time, it might have been the life’s work of a mage or mechanic. Yet today, it was nothing without said life. A sad tale indeed. Her partner seemed taken aback. There was another attempt on the whole ghost story business, but that fell fairly flat. Nat did not even respond to it, not really. Instead, she had turned around as well, looking about for anything of interest. Yet, the vanishing girl had probably cleared out the slim pickings already. There was a good chance that the other had been in and out of this room for quite a while, given the rumours of hauntings having been somewhat old. Chances were, they had gotten the last of the valuables here. Yet, maybe the most precious ones, given how the other had flailed.
No use crying over spoilt milk. They had something at least. None of them had suffered actual injuries. That was good enough for the time being. While Kin was dejected, Nat was content enough. Not every stab in the dark could lead to success. But there was still a bit to gain regardless. Natalie turned to walk out, but in passing she decided to give a gesture of goodwill regardless. Patting the other Wolf’s head, hair was briefly tussled, as if the console her. “Maybe the next mansion you explore will have some proper ghosts for you to play with.”

“Best not dally on the small details,” she replied, inwardly chuckling at the pun. Nat also meant it, though. These kinds of questions were fairly pointless, as she could never hope to discern the truth anyway. Morgan could say any kind of number in this context and it would all mean exactly the same. Nothing. That was not a way to prove one’s identity, just one’s commitment to what might have been a lie. It didn’t matter either way. There was little difference between ‘deposed king in a new body’ and ‘delusional girl in her own body’. So far, neither really offered any benefit to her, meaning they were equally meaningless to her.
But if everything was meaningless, she might as well indulge herself in the ‘what if’. It was better than nothing, so Morgan had that much going for herself at least. Natalie shrugged lightly. “In either event, it is as you say. This does not really matter to me. I tend to judge people by their actions in the present, not by their past. Mostly, I wondered because it might matter to you. Wouldn’t you want to know, whether or not you are living a lie? It does seem like you do not really enjoy your current state, after all. Maybe it will turn out that you truly are a woman that has been cursed to think herself another. Then, getting rid of that course would be quite useful, wouldn’t it?”

There were the beginnings of a smug grin visible on her face. Fortunately, it had not yet fully formed when the gears sputtered out as quickly as they had come to life. Her patented way of starting machinery had worked for but a few moments, but completely fell apart now. Well, best to try and safe face by shrugging along. “Guess it is just busted,” she noted, hitting it again, lightly, to no avail.
Her partner brought up something about burning away rust, yet that was usually not how it worked, in her experience. Healing people and animals was a thing, but healing objects was better left to mechanics. “Sadly, no, I don’t think I can. Seems like we just have to write that off.” She’d turned towards the other person in the room. “Is there anything else inside of….here? She snuck off, just like a thief would.” Nat was actually a bit irked at that development, but there was little she could do. That girl had probably made off already. “You want to explore further?” Probably not, given how disappointed Kin had been by what they had found so far. Yet, the other might have also wanted to look for more possible treasure, in the hopes of simply finding anything more valuable than books.

Heh. She had caught this one unawares, hadn’t she? Briefly, Natalie would smirk about this, but swiftly return to the matter at hand. Kasumi got into place, so her partner would simply take this opportunity to climb on her back safe and sound, intent to hold onto as tightly as necessary, but as lightly as possible. Being too much of a bother would be bad, especially since she was spreading her wetness slightly as their bodies were pressed together a bit more tightly. It should be fine though. This had not been her idea to begin with, but Kas’.
Yet, she would still try to keep the umbrella in position as well as she could to keep them dry. Possibly a pointless effort. Judging by how the winds and rain were lightly picking up again already, the end of the mission would see them both soggy anyway. Fortunately, she did have some magic to help them not get a cold from it all.
Making good progress, the two of them would eventually reach the bottom for now, allowing her to get back off and hand over the umbrella again. “Thank you very much,” she noted and meant it, as her feet felt moderately solid ground again. The healer then glanced about at the woods that would now surround them on the sides. Due to the weather, much of the ground was muddy, but there was some heavy grass in parts that would probably give them a better path. “This will be the hard part. The mayor couldn’t give me much. I guess tracking won’t be an option either, given all that. But the man did say that there are two locations that we could check out. A few caves and a small lodge or tree house. He was not very clear on that. But they built that apparently for cases like this, a little safe haven. The caves are allegedly home to animals sometimes, so they might not be as safe. What do you think?”

“Oh,” came a soft response, that still said a lot more than might have been intended. This was a rather outlandish tale after all, even in a world where magic existed. Natalie did not know how this person had reportedly died. But it was probably a more believable story than what she was currently being given. Stuck in a limbo for decades, then randomly dropped out of it in a new body. That didn’t make too much sense to her. And it also struck her as awfully convenient. Anyone could claim that sort of thing for an identity. It would be quite hard to disprove.
The healer was still somewhat inclined to believe. It was a bit too outlandish a story to make up. While that kind of reaction might have been just as much intended, she liked to not go down too many rabbit holes. Best to stick to one degree of bacon. There still was no motion to stop the other from doing whatever cheesy thing they’d planned next. As someone almost too comfortable with herself, it would take much more to faze her. “Our ancestors might have had. But it seems neither of us truly cares much about our families anymore to join this guild, so I doubt people none of us ever knew will matter much,” she stated. It was not meant to discard the other’s thoughts, just to give her own perspective. Nat liked to judge people on their individual merits and behaviour. Though there was one thing that intrigued her. Now, she did not think the other was lying. But what if she wasn’t, yet still spoke falsehoods? “Do not take this the wrong way. I would believe your story. Yet, I wonder. If this is neither your time, nor your body and you should have died…how do you know that you are yourself? You might just have been someone obsessed with that story who was hit by a strange spell making her believe all of that.”

“Red King?” Her words did not express amazement or disbelief, but rather confusion. She had heard that name somewhere, sometime, but could not really place it. The other said that as if she should immediately know who that was but she really did not. Briefly, she furrowed her brows trying to figure out where she had heard it. Now, she was not trying to be rude or anything here. This was not her playing games. This was just her being caught unawares by someone who probably overestimated her infamy. It was certainly not helped that she apparently had some form of different form.
But no, Natalie could not dig up much, though she could think of something. “Hmm, I think I remember someone talking about a Red King who was some kind of big shot, but then fell on his face spectacularly and has not been seen since. Would that be you? I mean, it would explain the different physical form thing. You certainly look like a lot of things, but never a man.” Again, this was just her being honest and while she spoke incredulously, yes, she did pick her words in that regard to poke just a teensy bit of fun at him. No one could ever scold her for that. Besides, she did follow it up by answering his question. “And my name? I am Natalie Chevalier. Most people just call me Nat, though. That is usually just fine.”

“I have no idea.” Natalie was still standing in front of that thing, somewhat confused. If it was here, it had to be important, right? But there was no manual or such nearby, no way to figure out what it did at a glance. That would have to be important, yet it made little sense as it was now. Her partner clearly didn’t know either. It was really just an old husk of metal without more information. Yet, this shape and the work clearly having gone into it meant that there had to be some purpose to it. If only they could tell what it was….
Maybe it was some amazing magical machine that would make this trip worth it? Maybe it was an apparatus from before the calamity, meticulously restored. Until they knew, the possibilities were endless. Neither of them seemed to give much thought to the trappy girl, but that had been deal with. Instead of sparing her a thought, Natalie eventually decided to utilize the scientific method. I.e. she would hit that machine with her staff and see if something happened.

A trinket? Natalie eyed the object with some curiosity. It looked both fragile and magical in nature, which quickly grasped her attention. The question where something like this could have come from was prominent in her mind. He was quick to outline that, while she scrambled to catch the unexpected toss. While she was not terrible at playing catch, she almost failed to grasp it in time. In many timelines, Natalie would probably have missed it, with potentially long-reaching results. This one was the one where she managed to get it in time, however.
The healer studied it curiously, feeling some hitherto unknown power affecting her once it touched her skin. This was not some overwhelming strength surging through her. More a gentle little current, subtly boosting her. “It feels like it could be useful. Are you sure you don’t want it? Those are your spoils, after all.” While fairly certain that he did know what he was doing, asking again could not hurt. She would only do it once, out of courtesy. If he agreed, she would also act accordingly. “Thank you. Let’s just hope that this thing doesn’t come around to collect what it has lost.” Natalie would look over her shoulder to where she suspected the android to be, but found nothing there. It did not feel like they were being followed, either. “And thank you for protecting me, naturally.”

She probably couldn’t do much to change what was going on here. But that was fine. At the very least, the back and forth was focused on the two of them, while she could easily stay out of it. If anyone, it would be that girl that looked like a jerk, not Natalie who was seemingly content with her one book. Mostly. Aside from that, she decided to look about the room for a bit while those two were distracted. After all, three books was a relatively meagre bounty for a place that was hidden away as neatly as this one. The skeleton and armour might have been enchanted haphazardly, but the mechanisms outside the door would have needed to have been built into the structure. That girl had probably just renewed the magic that had long since run out.
It felt like that meant there had to be more to this place. Otherwise that girl would not have been holed up here for so long, either. As she strode a bit deeper into the room, Natalie did notice that a good chunk of it was actually taken up by some form of old, rusty construct. Intrigued, she would step closer to investigate.

One way or another….if that person didn’t seem like, um, an idiot, that would have been a very troubling statement. As was, Natalie did not feel like she had much to worry. They were apparently in the same guild, too. That didn’t make it impossible for anything bad to happen, but made it much more unlikely. Still, it was probably best to clear that up, so the other did not cause severe issues for herself down the road. Briefly, she harrumphed, her hand in front of her mouth. “You might want to choose your words more likely. I am able to tell you mean no harm, but someone else might understand that as you taking them against their will, should they object.” That was probably the most concise way to phrase this. That might have sounded a bit dark and everything, but with these kinds of things it was best to come clear immediately.
Given that the other would likely be taken aback by that, Nat went easy on the stranger with the rest. “You also should not talk about your bare butt so publicly. Though I am curious why anyone would put it there to begin with. It is supposed to let you identify yourself. Hiding it on an intimate place that is covered by that very armor that causes you so many issues seems…inadvisable.” The healer still did nothing to get out of the other’s embrace, of course, but she certainly had taken to more ‘aggressively’ pointing out problems. Her demeanour remained pleasant, but this one triggered her big sister instincts, which did include some tough love here and there. Especially when one’s odd antics could reflect badly upon the guild.
