MISSION NAME: My Leg! CLIENT: ??? CHARACTERS: Natalie Chevalier Notorious B.I.G. MISSION BRIEFING: A client needs help with finding his leg.
Bandit happened upon a youth. He had a caramel complexion, black hair, golden eyes, no shirt but strange, red markings on his cheeks and sides of his torso. It was an adorable child with a metallic helmet and robotic... arms and legs?
Well, one leg was missing and as Bandit happened upon the boy sitting on the ground, the boy instantly looked his way. Bandit stopped in his tracks, seemingly stripped of the ability to verbalize and kind of response and he knew not why.
“Hello,” the boy said with a wave of one of the arms.
“Uh – who are you?”
“Hm. I'll get back to you on that, okay?” He looked away and down towards the missing leg. Then, he looked towards a nearby cavern sitting within a wooded area – the same they all were currently in.
“I think my leg is in there,” he stated matter-of-factly. “Can you go find it for me?”
Now at this, Bandit started to laugh. A favour? For some weird stranger-of-a kid? But when he caught sight of an intense stare, the contents of which were indescribable, he immediately stopped.
“...As long as there's a reward for me,” he said as he turned and beckoned Natalie Chevalier to follow. They were both there on another task, but it seemed this one took priority.

Children were the hardest people to deal with in some regards. Nat was a rather selfish person, but she wasn’t some kind of monster. She really did not want to work pro bono, but just ignoring an injured (?) child? That was also not good. Fortunately, an excuse was given by the big Bandit, who just decided there would be a reward. That meant integrity maintained, even if there was nothing. And she could get angry for a reason then, too.
Natalie briefly gave the boy a brief, court bow before catching up to her partner. “I guess we are having a detour” she stated the obvious, curiously eyeing the cavern entrance. It was an odd arrangement. The boy had managed to lose his leg in there somehow, but gotten outside? That did not seem too likely. The appendages he had seemed artificial. But how did one flat out lose a leg, regardless? That was not the kind of thing that could just slip one’s mind. “What do you think are the chances of meeting some kind of beast in there? He can’t have lost that voluntarily, so please be careful.” Her voice remained calm and gentle, indicating that she truly meant it. In a way, she even did. Having to heal truly dire wounds would be quite bothersome and painful. Not for her, but still.

The stranger looked upon the both of them as they moved away. It was a persistent stare. Bandit allowed a glance to fall over his shoulder back towards him just for an instant, just to confirm his golden eyes still refused to let them out of their sight.
"...Creepy..." Bandit muttered to himself in a hush. It was amidst Natalie's own statement and right after, Bandit offered a response to it regardless of its patency. "Yeah. Won't take long." It was brief. One would think he had more to say.
He did.
However, those were thoughts echoed to himself in the safety of his own mind. While some concerned the oddity of that boy, others were relevant to what may lurk in the cavern.
"I'm pretty sure something's in there," he began before thinking briefly on Natalie's idea. "Maybe - that makes some sense. It would explain why he wants somebody else to go in there, eh?" Though, that was far from the impression he got from the boy.
Immediate bats.
As Bandit approached the entrance, they flew out abruptly in a screeching cloud of black. Bandit yelped and quickly gathered himself with an angry, low growl. He was mumbling something and ended the mumble by exclaiming, "BATS!!" He angrily walked inside, entering the shade it had to offer. The afternoon's light was forcibly left at the door.

She ducked behind him, just in case. The bats were not threatening and did not try to attack. But she had not waited to confirm that. It did not take a lot of effort to hide behind that animalistic frame. If those things were dangerous, she could avoid them so. If not, she had not wasted much. A healer’s duty was to stay out of danger as much as possible while also being in range of those that needed her help. This was how she went about that.
“Good thing they did not want to bite us.” Natalie certainly meant that. Bats were horrible to fight, both in small and in large numbers. They could not be the culprits behind the disappeared leg, however. Too small and too many. The boy would have been bitten in other places if they had somehow taken off his leg. Among other things, actually. Following him still, the healer rubbed her chin. “I have seen a good number of injured people. But that boy had been in pristine condition. Well, as far as pristine goes these days. But if he had lost this in some sort of fight, wouldn’t he have had more injuries? There were those marks, hm…” She thought about it some more. Those markings had looked deliberate at first glance, but she could still be wrong in that regard.
No use, she could not say anything definitive. Hence, she rather said nothing. Instead, she focused on their immediate surroundings, wary of potential dangers. It got harder, however, due to the light diminishing the further they got inside. If she’d known they would go spelunking, she would have brought something herself. “Do you happen to have a light, or can you just see better in here?”

A grumble followed mention of not being bitten by the bats, at the very least. It was a vain effort to mention anything of the brighter side of things to the irascible azeban.
“Yeah,” Bandit nearly interrupted, cutting in on 'marks.' “He didn't have a scratch on 'em. Those marks were tattoos.” Bandit gave her an auditing glance before turning his gaze to the forefront.
“I can see well enough in here,” he answered as he continued pushing forward. It was not the largest enclave and ahead, a pile of stone and a small puddle of light from the cracked, stony ceiling lit its approximate center. When Bandit approached, he saw something poking out of the stone and beside it, a skeleton belonging to some variety of creature.
“Huh...” Bandit halfhearted pulled the missing leg out. He did not speak for a moment for what conversation ensued was within his mind, self-directed. “Maybe something just took it while the kid was asleep? Some animals like shiny things.” His tone became almost defensive by the end of that sentence.
“But then... wait, that can't be it then. This thing's long dead.”

He could see in here? Good. She could make out a few things as well, but her eyes were a bit inadequate for any thorough investigations. The meagre amounts of light coming in were useful to some extent, but not good enough to instil much confidence. Him being able to see well was good enough. He was the one who dealt with potential threats, she would deal with the fallout. The first of them was not very dangerous. At least not this time around. She had encountered clearly moving skeletons in the past, which had tried to kill her. Fortunately, without success.
“There is magic that can animate these. I faced it before.” She disclosed that immediately. It was not exactly a secret, just a little investigation she had done with another member not too long ago. This incident did not feel that way, though. This skeleton was less humanoid, and it did not appear ready to move. “I know a thing or two about anatomy. Not much about artificial limbs. But they are usually connected pretty tightly. If they are easy to take off, they are also easy to fall off. If someone took it in his sleep, it must have been something intelligent, not a beast. Though, it does not have to be the one that is now dead. Could be thing that made it dead, too.”

“Yeah, wouldn't that be great...” Bandit could not help but add a flavour of biting sarcasm to the hushed utterance he nigh spat. The idea of being assaulted by re-animated skeletons was very much in line with what his luck brought him on a daily basis.
“Heh,” Bandit began at the conclusion of her thought. “That's assumin' the missing piece is like brand new.” Bandit held the piece up for her to see. There were definite hints of time-weathering and the portion it fastened to – it did not look broken off, simply... broken from wear and tare.
“Don't even know what he can do with this,” he said, staring at the leg. He lowered it and started to make his way out. He glanced back, half-expecting some large beast to appear. When was he ever able to walk out of a place like that with a treasure without that happening?
“...first time for everything,” he muttered.

Odd. It wasn’t just that in the sense that she was a bit befuddled from the state they’d found the leg in, at least not completely. It was also odd in the sense that this was not even. Two arms, two legs, the human body was even in a lot of things. Most people also used their limbs in even proportions. Everyone had a favourable leg or hand they tended to use, but it was less so the case when walking. That almost always necessitated moving both in roughly equal measures.
Thus, she mulled that over, as they turned towards the exit again. Aside from this all being a bit too easy, there was something else weird about it. “He probably cannot use that anymore. I am not sure why and how he lost it. If one of his legs is in such a terrible shape to just fall off, then the other must be as well. Unless something happened to him that hastened the decay.” She was thinking out loud, really. Having witnessed ghosts and other such developments however, there could be magic at work here as well. Something that had caused the deterioration, both of the leg and the carcass they had found. Maybe.

Bandit shrugged - openly so with a wide, pantomimed gesture.
He did not have anything to add; but knew some kind of answer would present itself upon their return. There really was nothing that jumped out from the shadows to assault them. So, Bandit returned from the cavern and back into the open. As expected, the boy was sitting right where the two left them.
"You found it." He extended his arms. The robotic hands at the ends clutched at the air in anticipation Upon catching sight of that, Bandit smirked. It really was just a child.
He approached and handed him the leg. "I'm not sure what yer gonna do with this, but here y' go."

He made a sound, assuredly of gratitude. It was not a word, however, and already was the boy attempting to link the end of his leg with the artificial limb. He heard the raccoon chime in.
“Uh, buddy – that leg looks busted.”
But he kept pressing it against himself. His efforts resulted in threads – metallic threads taking hold of the limb. The number of them multiplied and eventually, the limb was tugged back into place. The bindings – everything that was lose and warn began to tighten and repair itself.
“Ah.” He said in realization. His voice cracked, but did not sound as if because of puberty. It briefly distorted as if his words were birthed digitally rather than organically.
“Activation behind schedule.” He rose to his feet and looked at Notorious B.I.G. . “Self-repair nearly complete. Require a stress test to accurately measure statistics.”
It was all gibberish to the onlooking Bandit, who immediately found himself in the trajectory of the boy's fist. He did not run up to Bandit, however. The fist shot off, connected to his arm via a thick, metallic cord.

Nothing happened. It was a bit odd for things to go this swimmingly, with no apparent cause for the effect. But Natalie could not contest the fact that they had found the leg and were bringing it back without any incident. Still a bit wary and confounded, the healer was naturally hanging back when the leg was returned. Her attention shifted fully to the boy when his body did something very odd, however. That was not how a human body should act or react at all. It was different. In her alert state of mind, different meant dangerous.
She kept her distance and observed, listened to an inhuman voice being spoken. Normally, Nat did not have much problem with non-humans. She was travelling with a racoon here, after all. But that voice sounded artificial, which was never a good sign in her mind. Being a healer, however, she could not do a whole lot other than stay behind and call out when she saw the makings of hostile action coming. Potentially, she was just imagining it, due to being a bit paranoid about all of this already. There was no hostility in the air. Yet, when he raised his arm, she did call out “Watch out!” anyway, ready to make a fool of herself if need be. Still, she was rather sorry than really sorry, so she readied herself to do the only thing she knew how to do – to heal and hide.

“Uh-”
Bandit did not like the sound of a 'stress test' nor the oddities with the voice that wove the alien words. Time did not allot him to even bear his fangs. All he managed was a meager shift of weight, a slight turn to the side and a brandishing of one, elevated, bracing arm.
The fist collided with a sickening crack. The impact tore Bandit from his feet. Both him and the projected fist were airborne and as it finally retracted, Bandit was left to sail another handful of feet before crashing into the ground in a nigh ceaseless tumble.
In a tragically comedic fashion, the only aid lent to him by his partner was an ill-timed, far-too-late, “look out!”
“...Thanks...” The utterance was made in a pained hush, plump with sarcasm and dismissal. His thoughts were far removed from her and re-routed completely towards the animatronic youth.
'Can't find an opportunity to strike against something like that...' he thought with an ire-filled glower. Despite his inability to react to what it considered a 'stress test,' his hunched posture shifted until some semblance of a readied stance took shape.
“Alright, try that shit again...”

Like a thick fishing line, its retract was akin to reeling in the line of a fishing pool. It was quick and snapped back into place without much room for the time it took to be taken advantage of.
It looked at its hand. Spreading the fingers and drawing them into a fist, it appeared content with how his arm worked.
A sharp twist of his head and the two were back in his sights. Allowing its palm to face them, something within its center shone brightly.
“Now testing... Disintegration.”
Light filled the area from the targets' point of view. From the palm erupted a column or fervid energy. It threatened to wash the two of them over.

But suddenly, Natalie Chevalier was staring at Bandit's back.
When did that happen?
There was a burst of light, a searing heat that approached seemingly between the very ticks of the sweep-second; but then there Bandit was, standing there. Somehow, he even found the time to turn to her and take hold of her. Each hand grasp around the bicep area and suddenly, the two of them were gone.
A burst of speed bridging upon insanity, Bandit set the girl down after the whole of the environment was but a blur to her and now their surroundings were very different than they were prior.
“Yeah... no, enough of whatever that was, huh?” He actually chuckled – likely the first time she witnessed such a thing, albeit done through a wince.

Things were happening faster than she could react, in a sense. First, the fist all but hit before she finished her warning. That wasn’t really her fault, at least in her opinion, no matter what he said. Having voiced often enough that something was off there, she felt like she had warned him plenty. And if not, she had more important things to do. For one, Natalie was trying to get further away from the enemy, moving towards her injured partner. He moved towards her as well and then some, activating a kind of magic to quite literally sweep her off her feet. Before too long, the healer found herself displaced, looking a bit befuddled with a faint blush on her face. Watching him wince in what seemed to be pain, she found her wits again swiftly.
Without hesitation, she laid her hand upon his arm gently and concentrated. “This is going to hurt.” She could say that much conviction, as she channelled healing energy into where the fist had connected. It probably would not be enough to fully restore the injury. However, they had not even tried to attack their sudden assailant at all so far. Being a slight distance away, it was probably best to restore their best fighting condition first, as much as they could, before doing anything else. Channeling starlight onto him like this wouldn’t be a pleasant experience.
If they needed to move due to renewed attack, she would not continue this, however. Either way, there was one simple question on her mind. “Do we fight that thing?” Frankly put, they did not have much reason to do so, didn’t they?
