“Oh, yes, having a healer about? That is appreciated,” she started, tone slightly shifting. It was a lot less soothing, but also more casual. But that should be fine, she had a beer in now. One was allowed to be a bit more direct then. Though, she did not directly make her further desires known. Instead, she’d put down the empty mug and tapped against it. He had promised one or multiple, but he had also just shared his now about to be depleted bounty. Still a chance that he might buy her more. And free drinks were always better drinks.
In exchange – though she would deny ever even thinking of it as such – Nat continued. “But when you start healing them and there is the smoke and the pain and they scream because they did not expect it,,,,suddenly that appreciation is gone. People outside the guild tend to work with me exactly once. Others can do what I do without the hurt, so they are more in demand.” She’d shrug after, basically just speaking her mind at this point. It was slightly annoying, but it didn’t bother her too much, most of the time.

Another chuckle. His response was what one could expect, really. He did not much disappoint. It was a pretty lame little game she’d played there. Yet, it had also made both of them laugh. That constituted a win in her book. Still though, she should probably clear that up. “It really is not all that special, if I am being honest.” Naturally, she would take the last sip from her beer before continuing, just to add another little pause to it. By now, that was probably fairly transparent as far as strategies went, but it was just her way of doing things. It was more fun to be that way.
Every setup needed a punchline, though. And she was far better at the former than giving anything interesting in the end. Nat liked to think that the disappointment from that would be endearing, rather than annoying. “I am a healer by trade. But my method of healing is kind of painful. Hence, I am not very successful at it outside of my own guild. Those guys don’t mind a little pain. The upside of working with machos, really.”

She had been right. It didn’t seem to do them too much good. But she had been right. Or rather half right. While her instincts had been good and were keeping them from being attacked by maddened suits of armor, the spell only activating after their disassembly turned two potentially strong opponents into a great many, much weaker ones.
Displaying her ability to run away once more, Natalie brought some distance between the moving parts and herself. The mere fact that they did anything was enough to elevate them to potentially dangerous levels. “Yes, it is very humorous,” she stated deadpan, but still in a friendly way. The other girl didn’t really take this as seriously as she mayhap should. Yet, so far, she has been effective regardless. Nat was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. “Should we…do something about them? They seem aggressive, and I am not sure if they can build themselves back up.” True, they were now small enough that she could potentially just whack at them with her stick until they stopped moving. But a ) it was probably a bad idea to repeatedly smack metal with wood and b ) that could put her in danger. Best if her partner did that shriek thing again to safely dispose of them.

Did he just do that mug in one go? That definitely was not a healthy thing to do. Even someone who drank a lot should really only take moderate amounts at once. It both diluted the immediate effect and worsened the delayed one, if she had learned that correctly. Didn’t have to be as slow as her own sipping, sure. But down in one was probably a bit overboard. Then again, neither her business, nor her problem. Natalie shrugged, taking another one of her sips, almost finishing her own first one. It was still well within her limits without getting much tipsy.
“A mage, yes. Though not very flashy or anything,” she replied. Her voice was much more jovial than her choice of words would probably imply. If she had that kind of magic, she would just create a brief spark or something of her own to indicate it, but that was not really what her brand was good for. “Hmm, you see, I can’t even show it to you right now. Well, I could, but you would be in a bit of pain and you would have to drink even more.” Once more, she chuckled, having said something deliberately misleading just to mess with him. It was true, sure. But it also was not exactly what people would expect from what had just been said.

Lost & Found [Closed, Mission]
Sept 21, 2019 16:04:44 GMT
edited on Sept 21, 2019 16:05:14 GMT by Natalie Chevalier
MISSION NAME: Lost and Found CLIENT: Town Mayor of a small mountain town CHARACTERS: closed, Natalie and Kasumi MISSION BRIEFING: A young man hunting in the valley has gone missing in the wake of mudslides caused by severe rain. With most of the town’s men engaged otherwise, the mayor has turned towards travellers in the hopes of finding that man and helping him, if he was injured. The task is, naturally, time-sensitive.
She was just sitting there, watching the rain fall in front of her. No one else wanted to be outside today, due to it. But Natalie did not mind. It wasn’t that she got melancholy easily or anything like that. It was just better to be outside, get some fresh air on the small balcony of the inn, and watch the street. It was just about all she could do, until someone else could be found. This was not the biggest town, but by now news should have travelled to just about anyone who might have been able to help. It was almost noon already, after all. The client had said that he would look for someone, once they’d realized that a healer would be useful to be present once they found the missing young man, man that it would be better to have someone else with her. Just in case. It was an all too common problem for her.
In this case it was warranted. And a bit unlucky, given that she had been travelling alone when she had gotten stuck in this city. Heavy rain had caused mudslides that were blocking the roads and most of the people that could have ventured out to find the boy had set out a day’s march or so away to clear the road before anyone had noticed him missing. It was not clear if the incidents were related, but the request was hastily made. So far, she had signed up and been given information. Once someone else was found, they would be sent to this one of the three inns, allowing the team to form up. It was not the most dangerous mission, but if that man was still alive in the valley but had gotten inured…well, any second counted.
And Natalie, clad in a white rain coat with a cowl – currently not pulled up, of course – sat there and waited, watching said seconds fall from the grey skies.

Natalie chuckled gently at his admission. It was not one of defeat. That had not been the point to begin with. He simply accepted her reasoning. Sometimes, it was not necessary to convince someone that the own way was better in any way. It was just as good to be acknowledged. She’d briefly raise her mug in compliance, then took another sip. It would be empty in the next few minutes. Nat was not stressing it. She did not drink to forget, either. It was just nice sometimes.
However, part of that mutual understanding reached had seemingly gotten to the man. He elevated this from ‘two strangers talking in a tavern’ to ‘two strangers that knew one another’s names talking in a tavern’. She was not sure what to think of that. That made this all a bit more real. If he had lead with a name, she would have considered it to be fake. But after a deeply philosophical discussion like this? He probably meant it. Still, being rude would certainly not be the answer here. “Nat,” she simply noted, while accepting his hand for a shake. Likely, his was both bigger and rougher, as one might expect. “It is not rude at all. Sometimes, acquaintances made at the bar are best left nameless. Especially when chances are to not see one another again.”

“Guards guard galvanizing gardens gallantly,” she replied quietly. The question itself had been poised in a somewhat joking way, so she replied similarly, although with a lot less gusto. Unlike her partner, she was not yet to take this little excursion lightly, given that she lacked abilities to quickly and reliably get rid of threats like that. And threats they were. Nat was a healer. She sadly was intimately familiar with how easily people could get injured in a scuffle. It was not something she wanted to experience anytime soon.
As they walked into the library, she thus took a more scrutinizing look at the this place, looking for potential threats again. That single skeleton might have been a guard, but given how easily it had fallen, there was not much to it. It alone would make for a horrible security system. Her eyes quickly found the suits of armor, fixating on them. By doing so, she did not really notice the door closing behind her. But at least she acted intelligently in the other regard. In ghost stories, suits of armour sometimes came to life and attacked the living. Best not to risk that happening here. There wasn’t really any reason not to do it. Reaching with her staff, the healer decided to simply push over the suits of armour, just in case. Worst case scenario, she created a mess. But she might also be able to prevent another sneak attack.

Natalie held her ears, just in case, when she heard the scream. She did not know the other’s magic well at all. There was no telling whether this would hurt her as well. It was certainly loud and shrill, even behind the mage, which was annoying in its own right. Fortunately, the skeleton was unable to do such. Could a skeleton even hear? Why was it destroyed by this? It had to be vibrations or something. Nat could feel a light reverberation in her body. But she did not crumple from this or anything like that.
Instead, she watched the girl’s antics a little longer. She decided to defile the corpse a bit more, but since someone already animated it, that probably wasn’t too big an issue. “I guess you killed it. Or re-killed it. Better if it does not jump back up again once poked,” she noted, following along. She warily looked around, thinking there might be more foes nearby. So far no ‘luck’, though. “If this is here, then others like it might as well. What do you think? This might be the reason why people thought this place haunted…but it couldn’t be all there is, right? There has to be some reason for it.”

“Must one?” It was a simple question, but in her mind, it was an important one nonetheless. Still looking at the man, she would watch his reaction, even though his opinion on the matter seemed pretty clear-cut already. He probably was one of those men. The ones that were defined by their past. The way he spoke about his demons, he probably had not fully beaten them. If he had, there would be no danger at all of them returning, no matter what he did. Still, she should explain what she meant. It was probably best to not get misunderstood again. She’d nudge her head towards the victim from earlier, a man now solemnly and quietly drinking by himself. “I agree it would be better. It is just a matter of preference to me. Not everyone can come to terms with their past. They would be better for it. But they also would be better for it if they were not dragged down anymore.” A light shrug followed. Natalie was a realist. She knew that not anyone could fight their demons. Letting them wallow like this was a worse fate for the weak, in her opinion.
Returning towards the other, she would take to his question next. “It depends. I would not jump at it, but I am not in a situation like that. If I was, I would. If my past was dictating my present and I could not fix that, I would gladly choose a future over it.” There was a conviction in her voice that did not match her usual, light-hearted demeanour too much. Yet, she meant every word of it. No reservations. Some might call her a coward, but she really did not see much of an issue with it.

“Hmm,” she made, thinking for a bit. She did get what he was going for here and part of her did want to agree. Or rather, she already agreed with it. However, that did not mean that her opinion had been changed, her stance on the subject swayed. It was not easy to explain, even for herself, so she mulled it over briefly, brushing a stray hair out of her field of vision. No real reason, just a bit of a tick sometimes displayed by the healer. Eventually, it dawns upon her why that was. “You know, I think we don’t think the same way about these things. Repression is bad. But to me, it is not forgetting. Someone like that is exactly the kind of person that should forget, to me. They are still swayed by the past, cannot let it go. It is not forgotten, just pushed back.”
Yes, that was it. They differed in definition. To him, forgetting had the negative connotation of someone just trying to get rid of the past but failing. But to her, it was much more akin to what he spoke of. Though not fully, really. After taking another sip, half emptying the mug by now, she would continue: “I agree about acceptance. In a way, that is the kind of forgetting that I mean. Not pushing the past away, but rather making peace with it. Coming to the conclusion that it has no more true bearing on the present and that what is done is done. If you can truly and utterly forget, it is not temporary.” She’d turn towards him, trying to make eye-contact, if possible. The next part was her making a very educated guess, but it still could be wrong. Then again, he was a drinker that talked about this as if he knew his stuff. Chances were he had some dark things hiding in his past. “Tell me, honestly. If I could snap my fingers right now to take away your most painful memories. Not just push aside. Not a distraction. But fully taking it away so that you would not even know you’d had it. Would that truly be wrong?”

This was a bit of a conundrum, really, and she hesitated briefly. Was it better to pretend to be a bit of a damsel and dim by falling for this, or to decline even looking? Natalie really did not feel like pretending, since it probably did not serve much of a purpose. That girl was a bit obvious in her attempt to play a prank or something. Timing was the issue, really. If she had let a few moments or even minutes pass before doing this, it would have gone better in her opinion.
Still though, she very lightly sighed, yet complied, turning around with a slight delay. And she found herself actually startled. Missing the door opening due to the deliberation, the healer was greeted by something coming out of it and swinging at her. Nature taking its way, the surprised woman, half turned, would rush backwards, trying to get away from the admittedly short-ranged weapon, not really trying to block the attack with her staff, but instead retreating, hopefully behind her partner. Her expression turned quite grim quite swiftly, an instinct developed from her time on the road, before joining the guild.
“Either an illusion, or a skeleton,” she’d note, deadpan, but making no mystery of her desire to let the other handle it. Sure, she had her staff to whack things with. But other mages were usually much better dealing with things. Though, she was not above pushing Kin towards the potential threat, if necessary, utterly focused on the issue at hand.

She chuckled at his answer. He did not really answer her question, but that was kind of expected. Natalie had to admit that her thinking in this regard was pretty out there. Most people would likely not agree a all, but she found solace in the explanation. Hence, she would give it to him. Later. For now, there was something else that she fixated on. “Hmm, I think I don’t like that word for it. ‘Beast’ that is,” she started before inserting another pause by sipping. Once done, she briefly narrowed her eyes, almost mischievously, though she swiftly returned to her usual behaviour, as if that had just been a little joke. “The ‘beast’ you speak of…that is us. Lust, anger, pride, those are all traits we possess. In moderation, they are good. A craftsman taking pride in his finished project. A man getting angry about an injustice and doing something about it. A man and a woman engaging int…well, you know what.” A brief chuckled followed. Wouldn’t be prudent to speak of such things too openly, after all. “They are part of us. We just do not let them out often. This ‘stuff’ just makes us bring them out. But is that really part of forgetting, or is it just part of drinking, which helps us forget?”
That was at the core of her philosophy, really. Nataly liked things in their proper order. She liked outcomes being attributed to proper causes. It was not forgetting itself that turned people into beasts. It was that which caused the loss of memory in the first place. Taking another sip, she noticed that he finished number one already. Would he claim the second free one for himself, or buy another? He did not seem finished yet. “To answer your question, it is simple. I consider the past worth forgetting when it keeps us from moving forward. Many people are bound by it, shackled by it. They try to preserve memories at the cost of making new ones. That is when I believe there to be a case to forget. The past informs us. But who we are in the present, that defines us.”

…. She really should have expected that, shouldn’t she? Mentally, she had pegged that girl down as being a bit on the dim side. However, since she generally did that to anyone who did not prove their smarts to her immediately, the healer had hoped that she would be proven wrong. So far, that proof eluded her. The plan given here was instead not much of a plan. Just going in. That was what one did to normal houses, wasn’t it?
Natalie raised a brow at that, but forced herself to chuckle. There was a vain hope that it would be a comment made in jest. Sadly, the door was annihilated right away, her partner rushing in. Finding herself suddenly wary, the mage readied herself. There was nothing there, though. Just a normal house. Following, she still kept her staff ready, just in case. Not that a simple wooden staff would do much good against incorporeal beings, if there were any. It just felt better. And sometimes, that was all she needed.
Remaining on edge a bit, Natalie would follow, naturally giving the other the lead in this. “Ghost stories?” she repeated, briefly confused as to why that question came now of all times. They had both come here exactly because they did not believe them, didn’t they? Briefly, all too easily missable, her eyes narrowed as she suspected a motive. Still, she did not speak with harshness or suspicion, just her usual, soothing tone. “No, I do not believe in those. I do believe in mages being able to mimic them, however.”

If there was one truth she knew about this place before even entering, it was a very simple and profound one: it would be dirty and dusty. That just was how old and abandoned buildings were. As such Natalie was for once not wearing some sort of dress, but something that resembled a cleaner’s uniform, with a raincoat of black overhead. It was not a very flattering choice of attire for anyone, but it was, most of all, practical. She would probably need more of that, given just who she was embarking on this little adventure with. Fortunately, she would get paid for this.
However, feeling a lot like a hired goon more than anything else, Miss Chevalier could not really share her partner’s cheeriness. Fortunately, she had already established herself as a more reserved kind of person. Hence, she could hide her annoyance behind a gentle little smile. “Yes, I guess we are~” she noted, trying to sound at least a bit positive about it all, as she took a closer look at the establishment that would house them for a bit, willing or not. It had mostly fallen to the ravages of time, yet at least it did not look like it would collapse on top of them. She really did not like the angle it stood at, though. Something was wrong there.
“Fortunately, criminals are a foolish and superstitious lot. If not, I am certain we are well equipped to take care of spooks and goblins.” Lightly angling her head to the side, she’d give the grinning girl a smile. Their magics were probably useful enough to either get rid of or understand any possible hauntings. Not that she believed in ghosts anyway. A mage animating a skeleton? Maybe. But not the restless spirits of the dead doing this or that. It was probably just a means to protect this place from looters. Well, looters other than them. “You seem to have more experience with these kinds of things. How would you reckon us to approach this?”

She just gave him a knowing smile, but did not elaborate at all on the comment he’d repeated. Instead, she elected to take another sip from the stuff. It was good enough for sure. Worth its money, even when it did not cost her a thing. She would listen to him speak first and follow his gesturing when he started to play a prank on the person trying to sit down. Her suggestion that he was a mage came true, for he did something that caused a spark. Probably a kind of elemental magic, utilized in a carefree manner. He was certainly no novice, no matter the somewhat juvenile attitude presented.
However, he challenged her to follow suit, something that could not too easily be done. Her magic was not meant to be subtle or to be used lightly. This place was too flammable in the first place, too. Instead, she decided that now was a good time to respond to his first comment. “I would disagree on that notion, actually,” she started, before tapping the side of her head, as if thinking. “I don’t think people come here to forget about themselves. Quite the opposite. The kind of forgetting happening here might be the most important kind.” That, she left hanging for a bit, as she took another measured, slightly longer sip. A pause included deliberately. He likely understood, but she did so anyway. Sometimes, it was not about making the other wait, but making oneself wait.
Yet, instead of giving an answer, she would instead give him a question. “What is it that people forget here, dear? Is it truly who they are? And is that which they forget really that which defines them? I think that it is actually the other way around. Forgetting that thing can be helpful, since clinging onto it can prevent us from being who we truly can be, to make the most of it.”
