The exterior began to reflect the interior, at least when Topaz's physical form began to change. At this, true panic assaulted Koji. Had some malignant curse befallen upon his sibling? His eye flittered from the corpse and back to his brother. This place was a trap after all. He was a fool to have trusted so easily, lured into by the promise of a warm refuge.
Beneath his palm he felt muscle and sinew grow and reform. The sensation was nauseating. A strangled cry came from Koji's throat as he watched with horror as Topaz grew into a body that mimicked his own.
"Topaz!" Still, his grip refused to release. And as the blue felid – not his brother, but a stranger – departed from the cottage, so too did Koji follow.
"You okay? Say something!" Beneath the abruptly angry demand, hysteria begun to consume his voice.
His heels dug into the ground. Both hands gripped at the one shoulder now, if not stopped, will try to wrench the exceed back from the sudden unexplained digging. "Topaz Nyctores!"

There was no doubt about it: Quatro Cerberus guild master was creepy. But Koji would be damned if he ever showed the level of unease at which the youth put him at. Within a flash, the man had disappeared as soon as he had come, leaving Koji in the dust on how exactly to react to the whole experience.
At length, he finally sat back down onto the roof and closed his eye. Crossing his legs, he placed his paws onto his lap and tried to find peace again as he meditated.

At Topaz's denial, Koji finally drew his eye back towards his brother. A creature so innocent that it was incomprehensible that such a lovely lady could have passed so suddenly. His brother's voice was hushed – whether it was out of respect for the deceased or the naïve reluctance to wake the woman. If only.
Koji did not verbally correct Topaz's suggestion, instead allowing the exceed to come to his own conclusions by talking a step back. An eagle eye watched as the younger brushed the senior's hair aside, before the suffocating silence consumed the room.
The elder cat's heart lurched. Not because of the presence of the dead. But because he became acutely aware that something was going on with his brother. Nothing changed on the exterior surface. But a sudden wave of trepidation and nigh fear washed over Koji. But how could he feel this way towards his own brother?
His final statement sent chills down the exceed's spine, and despite its ambiguity, he was half afraid to ask for clarification. The feline reached out with a paw, if not stopped, would try to place a steady grip onto the youth's shoulder.
"Topaz…"

Koji dipped his head in acknowledgement of Cheshire's reason to leave. No matter how many times he heard it, the simple act to leave the refuge of Cait Shelter caused his heart to wrench in a bittersweet forlornness wholly unique to a guild master.
It was heart-warming to learn that she hadn't wholly abandoned her roots. At least, there was something remained which wanted to revisit old memories. To see if anything changed? Nothing has. That would've only affirmed the woman's reason to leave. He could not please everyone, although it pained him to admit it. The guild master continued to remain pensively silent, letting the woman speak.
"I suppose people dislike change. They took you for granted." He offered lamely, although the reason itself sounded flat even to his own ears. To put it plainly, Cheshire's whole experience in Rhyolite Village sounded extremely disheartening. He would have loved to play the role of a wise mentor offer some sort of sage mystical advice. But he had nothing.
"Did you… did you find what you were looking for?"

Koji's head tilted as Sovereign spoke before inclining his head.
"It is fortunate that we were able to be civil this meeting." He agreed, his hard exterior softening once more. "I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavours." Koji rose to his feet, such that he towered over on the rooftop.
Then, with great sincerity, he added. "I hope that the next time we meet, it will not be as enemies."

Koji was still a little too distracted to pay much attention to Topaz's groggy awakening. His attention was still focused on the door. There was a moment of hesitation, then Koji wrenched the door open. the rapid motion caused the curtains to rustle, hanging lightbulb to sway, and the table cloth to flutter.
"It's Mrs Wetzel. She's…" His voice trailed off.
Careful pawsteps brought him closer to the still form of the woman who only last night was brimming full of life. He stretched out a paw to touch the woman's forehead before pulling back quickly as though he'd touched a hot knife.
She looked so peaceful, wrapped in the comfort of her home. But there was no movement from her. No flutter of breath from her nose. No gentle rise and fall of her chest.
"Dead." Koji said, his voice hollow.

By the time Koji realised that Bonnie was eating the watermelon rind, it was too late. She was already finishing off the tasteless, hard part. Koji grimaced. He ought to full teach her… well, something. How to function as a normal human? She puzzled him so much. He wanted to help, but had no idea how.
Topaz, of course, was full of good ideas. "Spooky ones." Koji supplied, watching Topaz's waggling finger with amusement. "Bonnie, give us a ghost story." He turned back to the strange girl. "I have a feeling you have a good one to share."
Orion had already made a great demonstration of a bad story, to which Koji felt vindicated to see a chair fly in his direction. He snickered as the man toppled over, but did offer a hand to help the man up again. Koji was still the guild master, after all.

Koji raised a brow in response to Cheshire taking the blame for her reclusiveness but chose not to argue the matter. He would have liked to reassure her was it was okay to be different. To be the odd one out. But it clearly wasn't the case, if it caused her to be driven out of the very place she was supposed to call home.
He was at least content to hear that Cheshire was content with her life now. "We all have different needs and desires. If Cait Shelter did not have what you needed, then it would have been cruel of us to ask you to stay." Koji said. "I'd hardly call it foolish." Her parents did not sound like the more supportive of people, but considering how young of an age Koji was orphaned, he had little frame of reference into the intricacies of biological families.
He adopted a bittersweet smile at Cheshire's insistence to persist with the formality. "It is rare for me to be uncomfortable in my own home. In any case I won't stop you."
"Forgive me for my intrusiveness." His gaze dropped to rest onto his paws, still rested on top of the worn table. "Do you have any other reasons why you chose to revisit Cait Shelter? Other than for nostalgia's sake, if at all."

Koji was glad that Bonnie was at least willing to try a watermelon slice. The woman was still a bit of a mystery to him, but at least she was slowly becoming more comfortable. He was content for his members to keep their secrets. He respected their privacy.
He smiled gently at her as she received in inquiry seriously. "Guilds are whatever you make of them." He provided with a hint of more solemnity. "For friends, family, a home…" He suggested, casting his gaze around the room to warmly smile at his pseudo-family.
Fortunately, Topaz was better at providing a more substantial response, to which Koji inclined his head to in agreement. The exceed then proceeded to grin at the eagerness at which his brother took to the fruit, and was encouraged to finish his own slice off with another massive bite before tossing the remaining tasteless rind out the window.
Orion, too, was happy to take a piece, even giving it a small song in his drunken stupor. A hearty laugh came from within Koji's chest as he watched a chair almost smack Orion in the face. Normally he wouldn't condone this sort of violence between his guild mates, but Orion was a special exception. "Glad you like it!"
With the watermelons sufficiently distributed around, Koji placed the plate onto the table before inviting himself to sit next to Topaz on the floor. He scrunched up his nose in distaste of Orion starting a cigarette. "Make sure you stand near a window. The smell is already bad as it is." Guilt for his harshness briefly prodded at his consciousness as Orion recounted his late mother's words. Koji sighed and rubbed the bridge of his feline nose.
"It is the best." He agreed. "Because it has all of you in it." |

Living in the wild had made Koji sensitive to even the faintest sounds. Which was why it was particularly unusual when he awoke naturally to utter silence. When his eye lid fluttered open, the exceed shot up to sit upright. Perhaps it was his general paranoia, but Koji felt acutely aware that something was wrong. He looked around wildly to survey his surroundings. Had this cottage been a trap all along? His eyes fell upon Topaz and the tension in his shoulders relaxed slightly. At least his brother was still okay.
The formerly crackling fireplace had died a pile of ash. Not even embers remained. Slowly unfurling himself such that he did not disturb his brother's sleep – goodness knows the poor guy needed it – Koji rose to tug the floral curtains open, letting the natural sunlight stream through. Much to his surprise, the sun was already high in the sky. How long had they slept for?
Koji retrieved his orange jacket, now completely dry, and slipped into it before creeping around the living room in silent feline grace. His eyes fell upon the closed bedroom door of Mrs. Wetzel and recalling her words in the previous night, Feel free to knock if you need anything, he rapped his knuckles against the wood.
No response.
At last, Koji raised his voice. "Topaz? Wake up. Something – something is not right."

Although Koji already knew of how William treated those who he could not control, the frank recount in which Sovereign provided still sent shivers coursing down the Exceed's spine. It did the job. The words echoed in his mind. The sheer disregard for life as well as the callousness in which the former Guild Master enacted his orders only increased Koji's conviction and gratefulness that such an evil was stopped before it could do any more harm.
"I am glad you no longer possess them." The Cait Shelter master nodded, although he remained skeptical of the truth in Sovereign's words. Surely someone as power hungry and paranoid as William would not have destroyed such valuable assets. Especially after he descended into madness. Koji suspected that Sovereign was only lying to plant a false sense of security in his mind. But then again, why even bring up the subject of magical items in the first place? The youth was a mystery.
"See to it that you do." His voice hardened when the man asserted his intention to travel a different route to his brother. "Enough lives have been wasted. I would hate to take another." His voice grew soft once more.

"Everything is the same, more or less." Koji provided, pulling out a seat at a nearby table for Cheshire before taking his own seat. At this hour of the day, most of the Cait Shelter mages were out and about, thus both master and ex-member were treated to rare privacy. "Orion is still drinking." The disapproval in his tone melted to warmth. "Although he has brought home a girl…" He recalled meeting the water slayer, who had seemed even more nervous and shy than Bonnie. "Topaz is still... Topaz."
Koji met Cheshire's eyes. "I know it was this stagnancy which pushed you away. But some crave stability and that is what we provide." The exceed followed the woman's gaze towards the bookshelf which housed perhaps Cait Shelter's most precious possessions.
"I am interested in how your life is faring after you left." He prodded gently, although the cat's curiosity in his voice was hard to disguise. "It's easier to talk in privacy, inside." His brows furrowed slightly into a frown as he clasped his paws together on the table. "No need to call me that. I am no longer your master." Even amongst current members, Koji was never fond of such a formal address. It put such an artificial separation between him and the other mages.

Koji listened silently as the young Cerberus explained their history, his eyes following the man as he advanced closer.
"Noble ideals." Koji praised, with a hint of reluctance. "But what made you think you were qualified?" It was not another jibe at William's eventual incompetence, but was a genuine question. "It is not so simple to control magic." At this, the exceed's voice took on an air of reverence.
"Magic is spirit. Control someone's magic and you control their being." He let out a low sigh, curling his tails around his legs and loosening his grip on his katana. "That was William's mistake. You cannot control people. Only guide them."
"And what of magic items? Did you have a safe to contain them? So much magic concentrated in one area… that's an accident waiting to happen."
