Koji's concerns remained unassuaged as Orion did not immediately commit to the promise, instead inquiring further about Koji's limited vitality. The guild master sighed softly and did not respond to the questions. Instead, he simply shook his head as he rose shakily to his feet to depart the training grounds and return to the Cait Shelter cottage.
It broke his heart to that the lightning mage was able to yet accept the news. But not as much as the confirmation that he had failed the test.

It appeared that Cait Shelter would be full of bachelors and bachelorettes. Koji's whiskers twitched in amusement.
At last, Koji was to take a sip of his alcohol, driven by Topaz's latest statement. As the alcohol burned its way down his throat, the feline felt pleasantly dazed.
"I think it's about time we turn in for the night." He announced, punctuating his statement with an exaggerated yawn. With that, he pulled off his jacket and moved towards the crackling fireplace where he curled up in a tight ball to gently doze off.

With his paws clasped behind his back, Koji stood at the doorway, watching Cheshire's retreating form into the sunset. His tails flicked idly from side to side behind him. Around him, Cait Shelter mages were beginning to return from their daily grinds and missions. But Koji kept his gaze solely upon the ex-member.

Koji watched as Bonnie's face underwent a transformation from confusion, to concentration, then finally to dullness. The guild master arched an eyebrow. He would have said something if not for the fact that by now he was growing accustomed to Bonnie's peculiarities. Her silence was rescued by Topaz, who played with role with a dramatical flourish.
Koji would not have considered himself a worldly individual who possessed a myriad of experience; he mostly stayed in Rhyolite Village helping the inhabitants, rarely venturing out further. Except Topaz's statement disagreed with this assessment. Koji's bottle remained untouched by his lips. There were many a night, particularly after the death of Sylvia, when Koji had drunk himself to sleep. Given his hypocritical lecturing of Orion's own drinking problem, this was a secret Koji would have rather kept hidden. But alas, rules were rules. The bottle remained full.
At Orion's turn, Koji's pensiveness returned to amusement once more as he took a generous sip. "I was hoping that would explain why the shower stank after you used it." He said, grinning to Orion.
It was his turn. Koji paused for a moment, before announcing. "Never have I ever… kissed someone on the lips!"

Cheshire held the identity of her siblings in mystery, although given her words, assured him that they would not remain a mystery for long.
Koji remained seated on the table as Cheshire rose. He adopted a sombre smile at her comment about the furniture. "Perhaps, until we the funds to replace it. Although if it's not broken, there is little hurry."
Koji was not surprised when the lady announced her departure and dipped his head in a nod of acknowledge. What did surprise him, however, was the warm embrace which followed. The feline's eyebrows rose briefly before his face settled into content as he wrapped his arms around Cheshire and held her like a father would with their child.
"I owe you just as much," He murmured back into her feline ear as they hugged, before they broke apart.
With that, as she departed, he would follow her out and remain in the doorway to watch her retreating figure as she departed.

Koji had not expected the materialisation of his brother beside him, but his appearance did not surprise him. Ever since his return from the battle against the demons which scourged Scoria, the youngster had changed. Whether it was for the better or worse, Koji was yet to decide. One thing was certain however; the Topaz as he had known was now dead.
Perhaps Koji had skipped all the five stages of grief and had already accepted the fact, or maybe he was still in the heart of the denial phase. But either way, the exceed provided very little reaction to it all, if any.
"Apologies, I should have asked you first." Koji said, his eye not wavering from the parchment, until he signed it off with his signature. The characters on the letter glowed and shimmered faintly with residual magic as Koji folded it neatly into thirds and slipped it into the insides of his jacket.
At last he rested his paws on his lap, still clutching at the quill, and turned to his brother. "Did you need your quill for something?"

The progress and innocence at which Orion exhibited only made Koji's heart ache further. Whether it was with pride or with regret it was impossible to determine.
"You've proven yourself today." Koji agreed quietly. "That you can protect yourself."
With that he felt silent and shakily pulled himself backwards to sit cross-legged on the training ground floor.
"I don't have long left, Orion." The feline said. "Promise me, you will protect the guild." His subdued voice turned hard as he stared at Orion with his one good eye.

Koji's eye remained closed. The feline's body was coursing with magical energy, Japanese characters and words flashing and glowing across his fur, illuminating and visible through his orange jacket. He did not respond to Orion's questions at first, remaining on the ground until his panting began to improve into laboured breathing.

Silence stretched between them for a long time, long enough for a bystander to think that Koji had not heard Orion's question at all. His face was obscured by his hood.

Then, he spoke, his voice low and weary as though he had aged many years. "I promised your mother I would take care of you." He said, barely more than a whisper. Flashing across hi mind were memories of the kind mage who came to Cait Shelter with a child – barely a boy then.

"Orion…" Koji lifted his head and when he opened his single eye, it was brimming with unshed tears.

Upon seeing that his sword strike fell true, concern briefly lanced across Koji's expression – but he did his best to quell his expression. The wounds he had sustained from Orion's earlier sword strikes began glow a light blue as the characters '受け取る' formed across them like stylised bandages. Slowly, the cuts began to knit themselves together.

His eye widened in surprise as the man channelled his deadly lightning magic into his sword. The iron blade crackled with deadly energy. Thinking fact, Koji erected the Solid Script '落胆', which expanded to a size big enough to function as a shield. Although Orion's katana smashed into the shield, it held itself. It glowed crimson on impact and reflected back intense magical energy towards Orion. The lightning, however, was conducted through the Solid Script and struck Koji with a vicious force.

Koji fell from the air, his wings disappearing behind him as he crumpled to the ground. There, he panted on all fours, and closed his eyes. The angry red '激怒' that previously augmented his magical power faded, and was replaced with the softer blue '癒す', which began glowing and healing his injuries further.

Koji's smile did not waver as he watched his attack push Orion off his feet. His feathery white wings extended and flapped quickly, bringing Koji backward as he tried to avoid the brunt of Orion's 'thousand cuts'. This time the slashes fell across his knees and shins and drawing more blood. The pain that burned from the slashes would have made Koji's leg give, if not for the fact that he was suspended by his wings.

Seeing that the man was finally taking the fight seriously, Koji reached behind him and pulled forth his own katana. The steel weapon clashed against Orion's before aiming to strike across the man's arm. Should the attack hit, the characters '取る' would appear across the wound.

Koji was perched along a branch of a particularly tall spruce tree, his hind legs swinging in air. This vantage point granted him access to a clear view of his beloved Rhyolite Village, along with the humble cottage that functioned as the Cait Shelter safehouse. It was clear that the only possible means to reach this particular elevation was through the use of flight, provided by his intrinsic Aera magic. Not even the feline claws and grace would be able to scale the trunk of the gargantuan tree.
In his paws, Koji possessed parchment and a quill. No ink was required as he composed his letter, instead only glowing characters emerged from the tip of his quill. An expression of serenity was cast across the guild master's face. Unhindered by foliage at this height, the forest breeze whisked through the air, and tussled Koji's hood. The parchment flapped in the breeze, revealing delicate cursive penmanship.

Koji's claws found their target, raking across Orion's face and drawing blood.

But at last, the man was responding. A cold feline smile crept up across Koji's face as he watched Orion's sword unshealth. Koji was familiar with katanas, having owned one himself. His own weapon was still strapped to his back, currently not in use.

As Orion's sword slashed before Koji, the feline took the brunt of the attack unflinchingly. The blade sliced across the fabric of his orange jacket easily and deep into his flesh, where blood visibly began oozing out in crimson rivulets.

Koji did not respond to the man's question, instead drawing magical power for another spell. As he bunched his muscles together and sprung skyward, manifesting a pair of pure white wings as he tapped into his intrinsic ability of Aera.

In the place of where he previously stood were the characters 失明. The Solid Script would glow a vengeful crimson before exploding in a concussive shockwave, enveloping Orion in the blast.
