The faint howls of blood hounds along with the enraged vulgarity of the fish merchant in the distance were muffled by the thunderous pounding in his eardrums as Koji ran across the mountainous terrain. Slung over his shoulder was a sack full of stolen pungent fish, bumping against his sword with every leap and bound. Such a situation was not an uncommon experience for the feline, who spent the majority of his short life thieving for food.
As he leapt over a particularly large rock, the tuxedo-pelted mage swung his gaze to check up on how his only other kin was faring against the chase.
"I think we're losing them!" He shouted by way of encouragement, ignoring the doubt that plagued his mind.

Laboured, panicked heaves became less so with the evocation of a second wind and an enlivened chuckle from the smaller of the two lamming siblings. The soundings of howls growing distant alleviated the heart-quivering flavours of dread and through the rush, the excitement of it all, Topaz could not help but release a handful a childly chuckles.
“Definitely!” Topaz replied. “I can barely hear‘em now!” It was shortly after that that his pace slackened until he came to a stand still. He made valiant effort to reclaim lost breath as quickly as possible.
“Sorry, Koji - Keepin’ up with you never gets any easier.” Of course, he allowed a glance to roll over a shoulder to catch wind of any approaching threat.

At the sound of fluctuance, Koji's wet pink nose scrunched up in mock distaste. "At least it would mask the fish smell." He muttered to himself between breaths by way of consolation.
It did also livening up the atmosphere, a jovial mood amplified by Topaz's trademark innocent confirmation. It was fortunate to, for fatigue was rapidly catching up to Koji, a factor not helped by the weight of a bag full of a fish.
When they slowed to a halt, the two brothers panted for breath beside one another, with Koji dropping his haul with a relieved sigh. The contents squelched on impact with the rocky ground. The Exceed's eye followed his brother's to survey for hints of any approaching threat.
A terse moment followed without fanfare before Koji heaved another heavy sigh. "No problem Top. You're the one with the short legs." He noted mischievously, nudging one of the younger feline's legs with his own white hindpaw.

With the nudging of his leg, a big-ol smile and an impish giggle escaped him. It was clear that he personally had no qualms with it, as he would reveal shortly afterwards. “Yeah, but look how adorable I am!” He clapsed his hands together, elevated his shoulders and blinked his large eyes plump with a misleading, off-brand innocence.
“So, what’re we gonna do - eat the fish? Like, right now?” The question came with a heaping of hopefulness and zeal. There was little that Topaz favoured more than fish.

One of the aspects he loved most about his brother was so easy going the little guy was. The infectiousness of Topaz's smile drew Koji's own lips upwards in toothy grin. "So humble too." Koji remarked with an eyeroll. A heavy orange clothed paw fell on top of the green helmet, tilting it forwards so that the helm covered those large yellow eyes to dispel their heart-melting effect.
The biped didn't immediately respond to his brother's inquiry, instead pretending to muse over it as he squatted on his haunches to inspect their piscine spoils. A pair of claws unsheathed to pluck out a particularly juicy salmon from the pile.
Lifting it by the tailfin, Koji cast a side glance at his brother. A impish glint in his eyes was the only warning before he suddenly tossed the fish towards Notorious B.I.G. by way of response. |

And then darkness.
When his sight was overtaken by a sheet of black, he did just what he was doing prior - snickering all the while as he pushed the helmet back into place when the opportunity presented itself. “Yeah I know, right?”
The fur-paved strand of blue at his backside swiveled, curled, and simply moved casually from one side to the other during the brief lull that ensued.
“WOAH! FISH!” he exclaimed as he plucked it out of the air. Since the exhilaration had yet to leave him, Topaz saw fit to start swinging the wish around in the air overhead by its tail.

Koji knew his brother well enough that the latter would be fast enough to snatch the fish away before it smacked into him, however hilarious it might have been. The blue feline's exclamation elicited a burst of laughter from Koji, who found the image of a dangling fish to be of great comedy, perhaps influenced by the adrenaline high of their earlier escape.
He helped himself to a fat tuna from the bag of fish before tying the knot to secure the juicy contents. "Now that we have taken care dinner, we should look for someplace to sleep whilst there's still light." His tails pointed towards the sun's descent to punctuate his point as the exceed tore a grisly bite out of his meal, swallowing scales and all.

And then it was time to devour it. The beginnings of the task was marked by the feline’s teeth sinking into the fish’s belly, a bite that was not so refined nor conserved. “Once you bite the first time, you just can’t stop from there!” Now, these words were mostly audible, but many were muffled for the mouth that birthed them was full all the while.
“A place for the night?” he echoed as he finished the fish off. “Let’s just steal one of those too! There’s gotta be a building with nobody in it that we can steal for ourselves. Put a big ol’ “go cod yourself!” sign in front so everyone knows to go away!”

Koji had not realised how hungry he was until he had totally ravaged the tuna, tossing away the bones once he was done. Pleasantly satiated, he nodded in agreement to @top's suggestion to steal a place, if only to humour the younger feline, privately preferring to avoid trespassing if possible.
"O-fish-ally ours." He tried, only to sheepishly add, "Sorry, my attempt at a pun was a pile of carp."
But it seemed that haste would be needed, for no sooner had Koji finished speaking, the clouds upon opened and began raining heavily. The weather seemed to have soured his mood slightly as he drily remarked, "Whatever we pick, let's hope it's at least dry."
Unfortunately, his hoodie was not waterproof. Thus, he scurried under a nearby tree, although it's sparse leaves didn't provide much in the way of protection against the rain. |

“You’re so good at fish puns!” The fish skeleton went flying as he threw both of his arms up in celebration of a finished meal and the crafting of not one, but two clever puns. It was a shame that they found intrusion soon after as they both felt the pitter-patter of rain.
His brother made for a tree. With just but a sliver’s worth of hesitation, Topaz followed suit. After bringing himself to a halt underneath the tree’s foliage, he looked about.
“Okay, we stay here until the rain dies down?” He asked with an index finger pressed to the butt of his chin. His eyes wandered about the surroundings all the while. “Then we can find a place that isn’t too beat up!”

As Topaz scurried after Koji, the older feline began unbuttoning his jacket to reveal a soft belly of white and black fur. Then, he shook off a sleeve and draped half of his jacket over Notorious B.I.G.'s smaller body to shield him from the cold wind that the rain had introduced.
"Sounds like a good idea." The elder brother agreed, plopping his rump down onto the base of the tree and leaning against the trunk, whilst ensuring that his orange jacket was still wrapped around Topaz like a large beach towel.

His brother really was so thoughtful. Regardless of the plethora of times such behaviour had been put on display, it always seemed to leave an expression of wonder-tinged surprise on his bestial visage. Mouth slightly ajar, he watched the jacket eclipse his form and before he could say anything, Koji was already bringing attention away from his glaring benignity.
“Hehe... thanks, you're so thoughtful,” Topaz admitted as he removed his helmet and chest piece. Next came the satchel at his side. He let the items rest before him and as Koji seated himself at the tree's base, it finally provided a mass of fur he could easily use a pillow. Topaz did not hesitate to lean against his leg and side, yawning all the while before closing his eyes.

Koji pretended not to hear Topaz's uttered thanks, simply because the elder Exceed was embarrassed to draw attention to it. Ever since the tragic passing of their mother, he had taken it upon himself to act as the surrogate parent (but very flawed) for Notorious B.I.G.. At this point, it was second nature to him.
As Koji's leg functioned as a makeshift pillow, the tuxedo himself curled his double tails close around his body as he too, left his chin fall to his chest as he drifted off to a slumber.
…
It seemed only like he had shut his eyes for a moment, but when he opened them again, the sun had completed dipped below the horizon. More importantly, there stood an elderly woman a few feet away from the tree.

Two feline beings bound together by brotherly love and impermeable fabrics. Their forms beneath a tree as the sky pummelled the ground with endless tears – the witnessing of such a picturesque sight could undoubtedly thaw the frozen hearts of many. In fact, it appeared to lure one who could not bare the sight enough to pass the two by without intervene.
“Are you two lost?” she questioned, her words rousing the smaller of the two for certain as his eyes opened, slowly, and seized the whole of her form standing there before a backdrop of relentless precipitation.
“Uh – oh, lost?” Topaz reverberated as he quickly wiped what may or may not have accumulated at the corners of his eyes. A portion of energy returned to him as his voice became less sluggish and more likely, albiet still subdued. “We – um, we can't get lost really, I don't think. We don't have a home to get lost from.” The fact was stated matter-of-factly, dismissively as if it were simply that; a fact. Doubtlessly, this older stranger suspected at least that much. The world was ravaged, they were nigh beasts themselves in appearance. Who, exactly, would give the likes of them refuge?

Although the strange appeared genuine, Koji found more difficulty in trusting them. He would've reverted to a warning growl had Notorious B.I.G. not responded first. The response in itself pained Koji more than he'd like to admit. We don't have a home to get lost from. Indeed, they were yet to find a single safe place on Alakitasia.
Before Koji could add anything to his brother's frank statement, the old woman replied, crow's feet forming on the edges of her eyes as she smiled warmly.
"Why don't you visit my cottage? It's better than sleeping out here in the dark and the rain." She suggested, gesturing with a crooked cane in the direction of the woods. "It's been a while since I've had visitors." Although warmth seemed to radiate from the elder, Koji still hesitated. His eye flickered from sleepy Topaz to the stranger, and back towards Topaz.
He didn't want to trust strangers, no matter how well-meaning they appeared, but at the same time, her words held merit. Koji did not want his brother to be suffering here. He deserved a warm and dry place, possibly with a mug of warm cocoa.
