There was something to be said about a mission accomplished, especially for a new mage like Orion. This was one of his first missions undertaken as an official mage signed under the Cait Shelter Guild, and to be fair, he had done a not so bad job. However, the only problem was that he was still dangling on the mountain-side, one hand on the Ajedrez sword, and the other clinging onto the crumbling edge of a carved staircase. He would have already pulled himself up, but the problem was that his arm seemed to have frozen from the pain and the cold.
Orion hefted the sword he was carrying, throwing it over the ledge and onto the staircase. With no time spared, his other arms was used to support his body. With both arms on the ledge, he slowly pulled himself up, the strain making him groan in agony. He was muscular, and very well-built, but he was also heavy. And that became a problem for situations like these.
"Fuck this sword, and fuck this family," Orion grunted, as he picked up the familial sword of the Ajedrez. The golden hilt was still flawless, tested by time itself, and possibly well polished by its owners. He was almost tempted to keep it, and later on sell it in the black market. He could always just tell the Ajedrez family that the mission was a failure. But in the end, his morality got the best of him. He'll return it to its rightful owners, and hopefully get compensated well. And then, he would never see those people ever again.
"Let's get this show back on the road!" with a grin, Orion made his way down, much faster than when he came up.

The plan was flawless in theory, but there were some key points that Orion was not able to calculate properly. First of all, the floor was slippery, but did its job too well, since Orion also slipped up just a few meters away. The snow seemed to have compacted too much, and a layer of black ice had slowly been forming underneath. This was most likely from Orion's pseudo-camping earlier, having padded himself down for a few. The second and last point he was unable to calculate, is how fast the polar bears were. He knew they were fast, but the speed it took for them to catch up to Orion was ungodly, and Orion found himself praying to any god to save him.
So, here was Orion, a few moments from either death or life. His eyes were narrowed, and teeth were gnashed together. He had only one chance at this, and he better make it worth it.
With a grunt, Orion lowered himself down to a slide. His back already feeling the slush of the ice build-up. He laid himself as flat as he could, and with a whoosh! he was beneath, and behind the wyvern. It was less than a second later that he had breached the cave entrance. With a grunt, Orion channeled a thin layer of lightning onto his palm, and as he felt himself fall off the edge of the mountain, he quickly held onto the ledge of the mountain-carved staircase that adorned the outside of the cave. It took all of his muscular self to stop himself from falling, his right arm, back and pectoral muscles working in-sync. The pain shot through the roof, and Orion had to bite on his lips to stop himself from shouting out.
It all paid off though, because as soon as he was just dangling on the cliff-side, the felt the air on top of him whip!, and the yelps of both the wyvern and the polar bears filled his ear-space. The giant polar bears, unable to stop themselves in time, had crashed into the wyvern. The wyvern could do nothing but take the hit, and both wyvern and polar bears were sent hurtling down the mountain-side. Orion felt relief, as though a heavy weight was lifted off his chest. He had done it. He was almost finished with this mission, with only a few scratches to show for it.

The plan was simple. It involved three different steps that had to line-up perfectly for it to work. One: Orion had to be able to slow down just enough that the giant polar bears were able to catch up. Two: the wyvern had to see Orion approaching, so he had to make as much noise as possible. Three: Orion to time his slide just right, hoping that his lightning enhanced grip would be enough to save his life. Oh yes, there was a fourth step: do not die.
"Hey! Bird brain! Over here you lunk of meat!" Orion shouted as loud as he can. The wyvern was resting, most likely the snowstorm had worsened to the point where this lone wyvern was not able to reach their home in time. The cave made for a great rest spot for any creature, and the wyvern just chose the wrong time to be here. He was not going to lose sleep about this though, since the wyvern probably would have eaten him raw anyways if it had its way.
Orion slowed down his step, now just jogging as he neared the entrance. The wyvern was screeching loudly at this point, and was poised to attack the approaching Orion. From behind, the polar bears were catching up. Their speed was insane, especially taking their body size into account. His plan was slowly coming into fruition.
Here's the deal: the giant polar bears will not be able to break in time because of the snow-covered cave floor around the entrance. The wyvern will attack on sight. Orion will be be sliding under the already mid-air wyvern, whose actions were meant to show dominance. The collision between the polar bears and wyvern should be enough to throw both sets of predators over the mountain-side. The wyvern might survive, but the polar bears probably won't, especially with the height of the fall.
In theory, the plan was perfect. Now, it was time to see it in action.

He wasn't sure how long he had been running. He had not looked back since he started, opting to keep one hand on the cave wall, leading him towards the exit without any incidents, while his other hand was stuck holding onto the Ajedrez sword. The visibility was horrid, but he managed as best as he can. He had hoped to cast a lightning ball spell that might lead the way, but had thought against it. It seems that he had already gained much ground against the giant polar bears, but he wasn't going to let his luck get the better of him. More magic could only attract unsavory elements, and he was not going to make this mission harder than it already is. Well, as hard as a mission for beginner mages was.
A loud growl resounded, and his immediate reaction was to trip. Almost. Orion caught himself, stopping for a second and taking a chance at glancing behind him. There was no indication that the giant polar bears were gunning behind him, but he knew they were there. Them being asleep had worked to his advantage, making them dazed and unable to react as fast as they could have.
"After this, I'm never coming back to this place," Orion sighed to himself, before sprinting once again. As he started his first few steps, he noticed bones littering the floor. He was close to the entrance. So close that he could see the outline of the cave mouth, only to curse as he noticed a figure at the entrance. It had wings. It was screeching. It was a wyvern. "I just live too much of an exciting life," Orion sighed, already having a plan in place as he continued his way towards the awaiting wyvern.

A Family Heirloom [Mission/Solo]

Orion snatched the sword as quick as he can. There was nothing for it at this point. He could feel the polar bears starting to stir from their sleep, and he wasn't going to hesitate at this point. No, hesitation will be the death of him. The low growls had already started, and Orion could feel five sets of eyes on him. The reddish glint pierced his soul, and Orion felt just a little violated. It felt as though they could taste his fear, which he can't deny was oozing from his very soul right now. He did not want to be eaten. He did not want to die.
"Fuck it!" Orion cursed out loud, putting the Ajedrez sword under one arm, and using the other to vault one of the still-stirring polar bears. They He just needed to get away from the big one, get ahead of it, and maybe outrun it as well. He was hoping that they were still dazed from being roused from sleep, and won't be able to react fast enough. The problem was that he needed not only outrun the polar bears, but also had to deal with running down the snowy steps of the mountain-side.
With a huge leap, he finally got past the lead polar bear, its growls signalling Orion to run faster. He couldn't take them all at the same time. Maybe one day, but for now, running was the best option. And run, he did.

There it was. The glint of gold caught his eye. Luck was on his side, since it was in the middle of two giant polar bears. He really wanted to be polar bear chow tonight, yes. With an internal sigh, Orion made his way around the first polar bear. The biggest one was curled up in front of the most recently devoured human body, while the rest slept behind it. It seems that the leader of the pack dictated which one of its celebration members would get next dibs on the meat. This also means that the leader of the celebration, big bad giant polar bear, had to be the first one in a fight, with the way they had themselves positioned. The strongest got to fight the most, but also got the first pick. It was the law of the jungle here, it seemed.
Light footsteps. Very light footsteps. It took three tries, but Orion was able to maneuver in between the first three polar bears. They had enough space in-between them to tiptoe in, and Orion took advantage of it. The sword was just right there, as obscene as he had thought it was going to look. Three steps more, and he would be within reach. Two steps. One step.
Grrrr...
Orion stopped mid-step, hoping to god that it was a yawn, and not one of the bears waking up from their slumber.

It had taken a long time. A very long time. Orion had almost fallen asleep as well, his head bobbing up and down. He was able to stay awake, however, and had his ears pricked up for any sign of trouble. With a long delay, Orion finally heard the creature stop moving. There was no sound, neither the howl of the snowstorm, nor the beast, made any noise. The sound of silence, they called it. Orion hated it. Even then, he waited for a couple more moments, before making a move.
Small and steady. He didn't want to accidentally wake the creature up. Orion wasn't the most careful man, but he knew well enough that he could not do anything stupid. One wrong move, and he was most likely monster chow. A step here, and a small shift there, Orion made his move to get closer. He couldn't see anything, but as he approached, he could feel the creature's laboured breathing. The smell was more horrid than that of the pile of corpses near the entrance, and Orion almost gagged.
He couldn't see anything. Internally struggling for a moment, Orion finally decided to chance it. A small flick later, making as little of a sound as possible, he lit up his thumb once again with a small electric current. It was minute, and he hoped the creature did not wake up from it. With that, he finally saw the creature, and scowled. It was a fucking polar bear, and there were more than five of them. Looking closely, it seems that the one Orion encountered was the leader of the group. With that, Orion made his move.

Yuss!! I can see Orion challenging him to a drinking contest, and have both singing karaoke by the end of the night- horribly I might add! The life of a mage is fleeting, and one always needs more friends to just dilly-dally around with, you know! What do you think?

the past catches up [closed/social]

Orion couldn't help but smile as he watched her enjoy the wine. Alcohol, no matter the occasion, made everything better, and from her subtle reactions, Orion knew it had made her feel good- at least a little bit. Not many are like Orion, who enjoyed drinking for the sake of drinking. When running away got the better of you, the drink doesn't help much anymore. Sure, it drowned out the more negative and debilitating emotions, but sometimes, the drink just made for a good conversation starter. It loosened lips, so to speak.
"Understandable," the lightning god slayer acquiesced. The world was bigger than what it seemed to be, and sometimes, people needed to just go out and experience it for themselves. It widened the horizons, and opens up doors for some. For others, its petrifying. "We also have to remember that there is a reason people don't want to see the world." Orion grimaced, "It can be too much. The world isn't what it used to be anymore, and I can't blame people for not wanting to take a risk. Not everyone has the capability to protect themselves after all."
Safety came in all forms, and for the people of Rhyolite, it was staying within the village boundaries. The guild protected them, and in turn, the guild benefits. It was a symbiotic relationship. Cait Shelter, however, tries its best to be more familial, "Belonging is a tricky thing," Orion started, taking a pause as he stared into his mug, its contents bubbling unexcitedly, "it's a two-way thing after all. The guild tries its best, but the member also has to." Orion smiled, "You can't say I didn't try when it comes to getting you to talk more!"
The life of a mage, no matter how dangerous, also revolves around their peers. The people they work with, and spend their time around. Orion chuckled at her comment about his stare, instead taking another long sip from his mug. The content was getting worse and worse every moment, and Orion enjoyed every drip.
"You know, I was asked the same question once," Orion started, after listening to Cheshire's reply, "was it worth becoming a mage? Becoming a mage under Cait Shelter? And you're right, it's hard to say now. We're in our prime, we're at the starting line." A frown creased his forehead, taking a small calculated sip, before continuing, "Every day is a mystery. Every time we wake up, it is a gamble. We gamble our lives away, and as a mage, we have higher stakes with higher rewards. The question at the end of the day will always be: why do we do this?"

His steps were light, yet every pitter patter seemed to echo loudly within the cave. Orion was sure that with each step he took, he was getting closer and closer into hell itself. The suspense was there, and his heart seemed to have increased its beating by three times at this point. Yet, he shouldered on. The thought of turning back echoed in his head with every step. He succeeded in pushing it all aside, for now. As he got farther in, he noticed that the walls were dry, and the air started to heat up. The snowy drafts did not reach this far. Orion was almost tempted to start shedding his layers, the reprieve on the weight would have been worth it.
There was a deep growl which made Orion stop in his tracks. It was just in front of him, far enough that he was till somewhat hidden, but near enough that he could hear the creature chewing on flesh and bones. It was a sound Orion would never forget. Crunch! The bone seemed to have cracked under the pressure of the beast devouring it. Whatever the thing was , it was strong, strong enough to break bones quite easily. The chewing sounds did not make things better.
Extinguishing the small electric current on his thumb, he placed himself flat on the cave walls, and shifted forward slowly. He wanted to get a glimpse of the creature. He needed to see what kind of monster was strong enough to beat a small group of humans armed quite heavily. But at the same time, he did not want to be seen, or caught. An internal struggle later, Orion stopped his movement in favour of crouching down. He would wait until the beast was asleep, and then he would make his move.

"It's not fucking here!" Orion cursed to himself, having searched almost every single body that littered the floor of the cave. This was the spot, since each corpse had on a specific uniform that held them as an Ajedrez family employee. But the sword wasn't here. It was neither under the corpses, and Orion made sure to lift every single one, even though it almost made him when the corpses still had some flesh in them. Nor was it tossed to the side, as the Ajedrez heir seemed to believe. Orion searched, and searched, and searched. There was only one possible answer now.
Orion looked towards where the creature had dragged a body into. It was dark, darker now than it was when he had first entered the cave. With a flick of his finger, a small electrical current began encircling his thumb, acting as some sort of light. He couldn't see anything without it now.
"Fuck me." Orion, resigned, went further into the cave. The sword must be inside, having been dragged accidentally by the creature when it was looking for a corpse to feed. The problem was, Orion was sure he was no match for it in a fight. He steeled his nerves, and continued on, hoping to find the sword before the beasts finds him.

Orion was in a pickle. He wasn't sure what kind of creature had lurked into the scene, but he was sure it was not a friendly one. Immediately, he had sprung into action. Grabbing three corpses, he threw them over himself as he lied face-up. The stench was unimaginably horrifying, but he loved his life more than a few stench-filled moments. he had hoped that the corpses would hide his own smell. Orion was not sure if the creature itself utilized its sense of smell, but he was sure that if it had great eyesight, he won't be seen under three corpses piled on him at different angles.
He couldn't see much, but could hear squelching noises coming from his right. It was feeding, eating the remains of those who still had some flesh on it. In total, there were at least twenty people in this cave, all corpses of course, except for him. He wasn't planning on joining the soiree, so he had to stay still, and keep his breath intervals to maximum, maintaining the even and shallow breaths. He wasn't sure how long he was laying there, eyes searching for any sign of movement. He saw none.
What felt like days, could have been hours, but only a few minutes, the squelching sound stopped. Orion felt the creature shift, sniffing the air. There was a tense moment where Orion thought he might need to make a run for it. Three. Two. One. The creature shuffled, before heading back into the cave. The sound of it dragging a body echoed, and Orion had to fight a quiet woop! down. He was safe, for now.

A Family Heirloom [Mission/Solo]
Sept 3, 2019 19:56:26 GMT
edited on Sept 3, 2019 19:56:53 GMT by Orion Prima
"This place reeks," Orion cursed to himself as he shifted the bodies around. The skeletons littered around were mostly bones, with some flesh still attached to a few limbs here and there. The decay couldn't have been this fast, and the bones which were deprived of flesh were too clean. No, the thing that attacked this group had most definitely feasted. It wasn't uncommon at all, since the creatures who attack mages were mostly carnivorous. Orion wasn't sure what kind of creature, or creatures, had attacked this bunch. The heir of the Ajedrez family did not really have the capacity to talk about it, having faced too much trauma, as his doctor had said. Vulcans were not the likely culprit. Wyverns hated enclosed spaces like these. It must have been something else.
The sword had to be here somewhere, and Orion could not help but grimace every single time he sees a sword that's not what he was looking for. A ceremonial sword, they had explained it to be. Golden hilt, and ruby-encrusted, it would be quite the prize for anyone that comes upon it. It is also something that pops out, and yet, Orion couldn't find it.
"It has to be here," he could feel the chill once again invading. A cold draft swept through the cave, and for the first time in awhile, Orion felt dread crawl up his spine. Something was approaching from inside the cave. Something far more sinister than Vulcans or wyverns.
