There was a time when Orion would have just upped and left when he saw what he saw. It was a ghost of his past. A memory best forgotten, and thrown into the abyss. The chances of seeing this hellish ghoul had been a million to one, yet he was the lucky one and won the lottery of the wretched ilk. The mage standing before him made him seethe in anger, as much as he was repulsed by his existence.
"Dad."
"Orion."
Orion stared at the man he had the privilege to call father. Tall, tan, and bulky, Antares Prima looked to be in the prime of his life. Certainly, he did not look over the age of fourty, yet this man was nearing his mid-fifties at this point. Lavishly dressed in leather and fur, he wore the Prima crest proudly on his right breast. He had not changed at all since the last time Orion had seen the man. Still haughty and proud, except he wasn't on the floor being beaten by his debtors.
"Didn't know you were under the payroll of the Ajedrez family," Orion shook his head, "You know what, I don't care. Let's get this show on the road." The lightning god slayer shook his head and made his way past the two. The sooner they got this done, the better.

Orion watched Topaz work his magic. It seemed very useful. Heat made everything easy when things get too wet, and for a cat, it was an even better magic to have. The cat-man finally sat down and fished regularly, to which Orion sent a prayer of thanks to the heavens for. He really did not want a repeat of Topaz falling into the water, scaring all of his potential victims away.
"None yet?" Orion raised an eyebrow, before grabbing a small can from his pack, and tossing it over to Topaz. He had packed enough for two. This meant he had packed enough for four people, one share for his companion, a three-person share for himself. "Drink it while it's cold."
The breeze was amazing, the sun was a-blazing, and the fishes were a-swimmin'. It was a purrfect day. Orion chuckled in his head after that thought.
"Topaz, ever wonder why cats dislike water?" Orion asked randomly, "actually, is that even true? Do cats really hate water that much?"

Orion only shook his head, hearing Cheshire's reply at his comment. He wasn't the least surprised at all. The young always had more to gain than to lose, and there were always more shadows to chase. It was not saying that Orion was not the same. In fact, he was a lot the same. He had more regrets now if he died. That was why he was still living and breathing. He wanted to make sure he had no regrets when his time does come.
"Ahh! But that's where you're wrong, Cheshire," Orion smirked, finishing the second to the last round he'll have for the night, "I'm built of stronger stuff! And this much beer will only make me sleepy, nothing too serious." He was a tried and tested drinker. He knew his limits. Sadly, he always ignored those limits.
Orion laughed out loud, louder than he'd anticipated. Okay, maybe he'd had more than what he was planning on having. The drinks were pouring, emotions were running, and it was a recipe for beer drinking. "Okay okay, go ahead before you're volunteered to be the one to wheel me away." Orion smirked, his face turning serious for a moment, "Promise to visit again. It's been a while since I've had good company."

"You know, one day I won't mind going down in history having made really good memories," Orion smirked at Cheshire, his mind veering towards how the village might cope with the horrid elements of the world finally catching up to it. He did not doubt the fortitude of Rhyolite village, nor did he underestimate the power of Cait Shelter's mages when confronted with such a situation. It was most likely an inevitability. Out there, it was still a right mess, and no one seemed to be eager to try and fix it.
Fighting the urge to laugh, he lost as he let out a small chuckle, "You know, I would think that faced with the inevitability, the people in this village would likely die without much regrets. Us? Me? Well, I can't say the same." He turned towards Cheshire, taking his eyes off his drink, "Can you say the same?"
The beer kept flowing, and as time slowly passed, his functions were slowly wearing down. But he wasn't one to be beat in his own game. His large mass was useful for one thing, and one thing only, alcohol tolerance. Plus, he had been drinking since he was sixteen, so he's built quite a bit of defense against the effects of alcohol. But too much, and he's still lights out.
"Oh don't you worry, takes a good bit to even get me dizzy!" Orion smiled, "And I'm not dumb enough to go on a mission inebriated, you know. Give me some credit here!" He can separate his professional life from his personal one. Drinking only happened when he knew it was not going to cost him his life, and out there, his life was always on the line, "Plus, I'm not that heavy!" Orion stuck his tongue out at Cheshire, pulling on his eye to make a funny face at the woman.

MISSION NAME: there and back again CLIENT: the Ajedrez heir, Michael CHARACTERS: Orion Prima MISSION BRIEFING: the Ajedrez family was impressed with Orion's retrieval of their sword, that the heir hired the mage once again to accompany them on a return trip. this time, they are prepared with a small company of mages.
Orion had not been too happy with this request. No, definitely not happy as he watched a small group of mages hired by the Ajedrez heir milling about their camp site. He was back in this horrid place once again. Stalagmite Wastes was not the place he envisioned himself to be in, and he almost turned down the offer. But, work was work, and he needed everything he could get at this point in time.
"Why are we still here?" Orion asked one of the passing mages, who only glanced at him and replied swiftly, "Waiting for one more mage, a strong one, apparently." The man did not stay afterwards, opting to go talk to his friends. Orion was the only one not socializing. He found no reason to. He just wanted for this mission to be done as soon as possible. Whatever Michael Ajedrez was looking for in that dark tower seemed to be worth another expedition, even when the last one almost cost him his life.
There was loud chattering now, and the small group seemed to part. He could hear his patron laughing out loud and boisterously talking to another person. Older, from what he could tell. The voice was deep, and stern, a contrast to the Ajedrez heir's own jolly tune. The crowd of independent mages hired seemed to finally fully separate onto two sides letting the small procession pass them towards Orion's spot.
"You have got to be fucking with me," Orion cursed, finally getting a glimpse of the last mage they had been waiting for.

Orion glanced at his fishing partner, "Because I saw you taking your clothes off." Without turning back, he continued, "I'm all about going stark naked, but I prefer my company to be of the opposite sex." The last thing he wanted was a naked cat strutting around him. He was a tolerant person, a patient person, but he really did not want to have to wash his eyes with soap.
"You're a cat. You eat fish." Orion answered dismissively, instead focusing on the few stray fishes still swimming within the proximity of his bait. They were just there, swimming around, not knowing that Orion will be cooking them later once they were caught. And they will be caught.
SPLASH!
Orion watched his guild mate hurl himself quite humorously into the river. It was an interesting sight: a cat bathed in water. "You alright?" the man having given up the pretense of fishing, since most had swam away after the ruckus Topaz had made, "Had too much to drink? Orion took a sip at his own, before putting it on the ground and reaching out to help Topaz out of the water.

The drink placed in front of him was darker in colour. Darker than those served in Rhyolite Village, which was the colour of piss. This one is a darker colour of piss. The bubbles bubbling, the light foam on the rim, and the water droplets around the mug were all very inviting. Without further ado, Orion grabbed the drink and too his first tentative chug.
"Holy shit, this is good!" Orion exclaimed, before ordering three more as he started to finish the one he had in his hand, "Fuckin' Rhyolite needs to step it up!"
Looking towards the woman still eating her pastry, Orion raised his hands once again, "One of that too for me!" The pastry looked good, very good, and smelled divine. He needed to have one. "Drinking is a leisure activity. Whether the sun is out or not, it is to be enjoyed!" The pastry took less than a moment to arrive, but he left it alone, instead facing the woman beside him, "How about it? Let me grab you one. No strings attached. You've got to loosen up a little you know!" Orion grinned, finally taking the pastry in front of him and taking a bite.

"Don't go stark naked, kitty cat." Orion grunted, his eyes closed. His fishing rod was planted in front of him, on the bank, unsupervised. A beer was found on his right hand. A cigarette on his left. Both were actively being consumed by the man. The cigarette inhaled less frequently compared to the almost-finished can of beer.
This whole time, Orion had his eyes closed, just enjoying the quiet afternoon. The man always enjoyed days like this. It was perfect. And the best part was that he had company, which never happened much at all these past couple of months. The world was suffering once again, but it could wait a day.
Fishing, after all, was more important.
"Don't you eat any of the fish I caught. I promised your brother I'd bring some back," Orion muttered under his breath, just soft enough for Topaz to hear. Fishing also meant silence, loud sounds scare fishes away after all. Looking at his companion, he asked, "Did you nod off again?"

"You underestimate the people of Rhyolite Village," Orion shook his head, "I made the same mistake once, you know." He could still remember his argument with the guild master. The world was bigger than the village. The world had much more to offer compared to the village. The guild was better off somewhere where it could prosper. But it was never about that. "The people here. They've seen things, Cheshire. They've known all along what is out there, and what could happen at a moment's notice." He paused, taking a smaller sip of his drink this time, "But, what they've decided is that the monstrosity of the world will not stop them from living a happy life, a carefree life. That, Cheshire, is what makes this village stronger than any of us." The will to keep going, even when the going gets tough, is what defines true strength, true bravery.
Orion had sobered for a moment, his face turning a red tinge as he processed all of what he said. He was not the smartest man, but he knew things. He knew because he dared to ask. He listened to them intently, as drunk as he was most nights. The people of this village carried a heavy burden, and the nights where spirits were low and alcohol was flowing, they tend to talk a lot. Too much, sometimes. Orion heard them all.
Pain and suffering, that was the echoed sentiment. Pain and suffering, a never ending cycle that tore through the lives of these villagers. Yet, they wake up every morning, ready to face whatever is to come. That is courage. Something Orion is still struggling at this point.
He was shaken from his thoughts, his face most likely looking like he was lost in alcohol. It wouldn't be the first time he had nodded off, nor would it be the last. Most think him a drunkard, few knew he had a reason to be.
"Rumours? You'll get through those." Idle talk was idle talk, after all. "This village needs to liven up a bit, after all, and sensationalizing your departure made for a great story to tell!" Orion grinned, "Not that I'd believe any of them of course. I'm sure you'll tell me when you're ready." Orion was not one to pry, but he was one to have his ears open when someone needed to just talk. He was a listener, he was told. He just really liked stories, he would answer.

There was a time when Orion was dirt poor. He never had money, nor did he ever care for it. His family was supposedly very rich, in the past, yet the thought of acquiring mass amounts of wealth never really appealed to him. Money was very corruptible, and it easily sways the weak minded to its bidding. Orion, however strongly built, knew of his vices. Money, therefore was not a good thing for him to get attached to. And he never really gets the chance to anyways, because of his vices.
Alcohol and cigarettes were the main proprietors of his wallet. And here he was in Shale Town, ready to once again shell out money to try out their famous alcoholic beverages. It was a bit different from Rhyolite, with its building being in a much better state. He could tell that the metals worked better for protection, compared to the wooden shambles Rhyolite seemed to be composed of. It was a change of scenery, and Orion only had one thought in mind: beer.
"One of your finest, my good man!" Orion giddily sat on the bar, clapping his hands as he waiting for the barkeep to get to his order. But then, a smell invaded his nostrils. To the left. He glanced and saw a woman, eating a tart of all things, in the middle of a bar, which served alcohol. A tart. "Hey, lady. You seriously eating a pastry in the middle of a bar?" Orion laughed, "They must taste mighty good for you to ignore the booze lining the walls!"

Orion did not expect his day to progress into this. He wanted to spend the day just fishing, taking a break from his work as a mage of Cait Shelter. It was supposed to be an escape, especially after the last mission where he had been in one of the coldest regions of Alakitasia. The sun was a blessing, and Orion intended to bathe in its glory after suffering through an endless snowstorm.
Now he was lying on the sand, back hurting, and holding onto a mermaid. A mermaid of all things. Orion had to chuckle at the situation, before asking, "Are you alright, lady?" He was fine, himself, his back most likely just needed a quick rinse of salt water. The mermaid, however, had just been chased by a dragon. Yeah, she might need some help for sure.
His hand never moved from her, and he could feel every twitch that she made. It was a nice feeling, holding someone close. And she was very easy on the eyes as well. Fuck! Orion thought, as a blush suddenly crept up his cheeks. Their close proximity, her beautiful visage, and his stupid hormones. Those three were definitely a bad combination.
"Uhm...ah..." Orion felt a bit stupid, opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of water, "Well, you see, do you...uhm...I mean can you...ah I mean are you able to be on land?" He managed to blurt out. He wasn't sure how mermaids worked, but she seemed to be part fish, so being on land might not be the best idea.

Orion smiled, her argument definitely making sense. It was how he would justify it, after all. Leaving the village was a way to see the world, to know what is happening around the area, to be more...worldly. People often tend to stick to their comfort zones, unwilling to leave their bubble, as Cheshire would call it. The bubble, however, served an important function. Rhyolite Village served more than just a safe-haven, but also as a building block of society. It was an attempt for civilization, at its bare bones.
"This bubble is more than what it looks like, you know," Orion frowned, trying to find the words before it left him, "Rhyolite is a place where people try to be people, for the most part." He paused for a moment, "Out there, the Calamity is still alive, ravaging whatever it could get its hands on. In settlements like these, we try to forget. We try to move past our bloody past, and forged a new future that's remotely better than what we've had."
Orion wasn't sure how to continue after his small spiel. His face had turned ashen, which he tried to drown by chugging down the last of his beer. He waved for the barkeep, another mug was placed in front of him in a flash. He'd been here too many times, and everyone knew how much he'd drink, they were always prepared.
"Family's important," Orion's gaze went past Cheshire and onto the street, lost in his thoughts for a moment. Family was a word he could never utter without feeling a pang in his chest. Family was something he did not have. "Me? I wake up for smoke and booze, of course!" Orion wiped the frown on his face, replacing it with a well-practiced smile. He really did not know why he was fighting. To be stronger? Probably. To honour his mother, most definitely. There was something else, however, and he just didn't know how to articulate it properly. It was at the back of his mind, just nagging at him.
"To family! May they always keep you straight onto your course!" He toasted, his smile now full-on as he took a long gulp of his drink, "Have you met any of the members yet? Master? Any of them pester you?" He was slowly feeling the effects of alcohol, but he wasn't debilitated...yet.
