What Almost Was, a mission ft. Kin
Sept 30, 2019 23:53:59 GMT

“Fools...” He shook is head, black hair pushed aside after daring to fall before his burning, sapphire eyes. Ire burbled in the pit of his stomach. The man wanted to pound his fist through the siding of the adjacent building. However, that was unbecoming. He released a huff, a short, amused chuckle – a chortle, and did so with his eyes closed.
The origins of his frustrations and amusement was his wish to confront a particular breast. However, he was unable to rally anybody to accompany him. They contrasted with his persona too starkly. However, after he gathered himself, he moved towards the city's main entrance.
“...Hmph!” He smirked, catching sight of a creature he assumed sentient, but on a lesser standing than himself. After all, they were not even human.
“Creature there...” he greeted. “I require a party for I wish to slay--”
The azeban walked right by without a word. The man shook his head and with a flick of his wrist, allowed a blue flame to erupted before the beastkin. He stopped and slowly turned his attention to the spell's caster.
“Do not ignore me. I will make an exchange of the monetary variety. You have abilities, no?”
He sighed. Just a sigh and approached.
“I hope you're stinkin' rich...” Bandit muttered.

Snooping around was an important part of the trickster’s routine. The shady woman sat on the roof of a crude, little cottage. It was a nice little vantage point to watch people come and go through the main gate. All sorts of colorful sights strutted by. And today, she had spotted something interesting...
Seeing a sharp-dressed snob all the way out here was one thing... But a snob who wielded magic? Now that tickled her curiosity. Her smile sharpened when a familiar face got caught in the moment. The fancy words reached her sharp ears. Oh, now she absolutely had to get in on this... Mostly to mess with the grump.
Kin dropped down from her perch and crept closer to the discussion. Her voice chimed cheerily from right behind Bandit. “Hey there, little raccoon~!” Sure, she was vaguely aware of the guy’s actual name, but using it was never as amusing as poking the grumpy guildie with nicknames.
The golden gaze shifted slyly between the azeban and the stranger. “Now what do we have here? An adventure in the making, hm?” She cast a knowing look at the furry creature. Honeyed words dripped from her lips. “You can tell me... There are no secrets between guild mates, right~?” She was one to talk...

What Almost Was, a mission ft. Kin

Someone else approached. Her greeting went not to him, but the, as accurately described, small raccoon. Just his gaze shifted to her. His head did not move, nor did his torso or neck. It was an odious side glance and because side glaces were forced and mildly uncomfortable to perform, real intention was made to execute it.
Meanwhile, Kin was staring face to face with Bandit, who turned his head towards her before she could impishly cast out her first, 'hey-'
He just... stared. There was no greeting from him. He assumed there was intent to surprise him, but with bolstered senses from the animistic portion of him that she mocked, it proved difficult.
The stranger cleared his throat. “...Yes. Just that. You two seem to know each other. Do you possess abilities as well? I would like the hire the both of you. Of course, I will pay you.”
“The opposite, actually,” Bandit replied, but it was to Kin.
“And my name is Helios,” he interjected.

The trickster’s eye twitched and smile sharpened when the grumpy creature stonewalled her once again. How typical. It had been like this for as long as she had known him... Which wasn’t all that long, but still! She had no idea what the raccoon’s breaking point was, but on her trickster pride she vowed to find it!
When the snobbish stranger asked about abilities, the ghastly mage smiled sweetly. “I sure do! My abilities are... hm~ otherworldly.” And that was all a total stranger needed to know about her. She was sure the little guildie wouldn’t blab. If he even knew.
With a sweep of hand, the playful woman dipped into a theatrical little bow. “You can call me Kin~! Everyone else does.” She was on a first-name basis with everyone. Except those who were (un)lucky enough to get a nickname. Speaking of which...
Keen on stealing the initiative, Kin kept going. She directed her hands towards her short guild mate. “And this lovable, little grump here is Baron von Fluffybutt!” The cheery declaration was so loud half the village must have heard it. She quickly leaned closer to Helios for a conspiratorial whisper... “He likes to be called Fluffy. It makes him feel pretty.” ...making sure her grumpy buddy would 'accidentally' hear it too.

Pleased that he was able to siphon an answer from her, he allowed a simper to slip atop those uppish lips of his.
“That'll do,” he said with complete and utter brevity. “Then to the Plagio Wood.” It was around then did he receive the other individual's name – or what he liked to be called according to Kin. It was amusing enough to Helios that he chuckled.
“Oh, does he?” he asked with amused suspicion. Hardly did he actually question it. It was difficult to tell what was creating that expression of his. Was it the beastkin being at the butt of Kin's joke or was it her juvenile attempts to rustle him? Helios turned a curious eye to Bandit, who actually had a smirk in place. His expression read, 'what can you do?' as he openly shrugged.
“It's Bandit, but I know I'm cute as fuck – so if you wanna really drive it home with pet names, go ahead. Just don't do it too much.” He swilled his hips. “I may not be able to keep things business if you start makin' things too spicy.”

Following along, the playful woman paid close attention to both her guild mate and their fancy customer. Any money promised was simply a bonus on top of the adventure. ...Aaand the chance to mess with two people at once!
While Bandit took the teasing in stride, Kin let out a sly mutter beneath her breath. “Ho hum~ Be careful what you say... Someone might take it as an invitation, Fluffy.” Poke, poke, poke~! So far the little critter was deflecting the jabs slyly, but she was determined to find an opening somewhere.
Naturally, this Helios guy wouldn’t be safe from the trickster’s poking either. She had caught an interesting mention after all. “Sooo, you mentioned Plagio Wood...” Maybe the name rang some vague bell, maybe it didn’t. It was all secondary anyway. “What could a fancy man like yourself possibly want from there, hm~?” She bet it wasn’t just sightseeing or mushroom gathering.

Hm. Grotesque.
Catching sight of Bandit's behaviour did little but invite regret. He rather turn his attention towards the task at hand than what it had fallen upon. Such was obvious. There was a distaste he was experiencing, which was visible on his face.
“Careful or I'll get laid? Oh, no!” Bandit encompassed himself in a suffocating, stifling aura of sarcasm. He pressed his hands up against the sides of his face in pantomimed, disingenuous shock and gasped. The sharp intake was done like a parent would to a child to feign legitimate surprise.
They were on their way. During the journey, Helios saw fit to answer Kin's question.
“To fell a beast – or rather, at least attain something from it. It will be well worth my efforts.”

When Bandit returned fire with sarcasm as his ammo, Kin had to deflect the whole idea. “Pft, hah~ You wish!” Her smile sharpened. “Keep dreaming, Fluffy.” As if she would ever get that close and intimate with a guild mate. Or anyone else really...
Luckily, having two targets meant the azeban got a moment to breathe as the trickster turned her attention onto the young man. She cocked her head at the mention of a beast. “Interesting~ Does this beast have a name?” Well, even if it did, she probably wouldn’t know it. She had always been more interested in snooping people’s names anyway.
Beneath the mask, the devious snoop was trying to piece together the puzzle that was Helios. His fancy outfit and willingness to flaunt money as a motivator meant he wasn’t a mercenary or a hunter. Maybe an eccentric collector? A mage looking to find rare ingredients or catalysts? Hm hm, the puzzle was still so incomplete...
While journeying along, Kin was eager to keep silence away. “Could it be the fabled giant bear?” Her gaze wandered around idly, enjoying the sights. “The elusive duck-billed poison beaver?” Each suggestion was tossed out carefreely, like those strange beasts had been common knowledge. “Or the fearsome werebadger?” ...Except two or three of those were something she completely made up on the spot.

That whole exchange had a stubborn smirk etched onto the beastkin's face. Somehow, it appeared as if Kin managed to elevate the creature's mood. Then again, the trickster spirit was definitely a difficult one to mess with.
“It does.” He said nothing more. The guesses Kin produced grew ever-the-more ridiculous and he felt obligated to supply an answer or the whole journey would be riddled with asinine guesses.
“I may have been misleading. We aren't not felling a beast, but catching one. This beast...
is a Salamander.”
Silence from Bandit. He turned his attention towards him and said...
“...the fuck is that?”

Upon hearing the name of their prey, Kin perked up immediately. “Ooh, I know this one.” She glanced downwards at the raccoon and a smug smile played on her lips. For once she would get to flaunt her superior smarts!
With a feigned cough, the trickster lifted a finger and assumed her wise lecturer voice. Or a poor imitation of one at least. “Ahem. A Salamander is a small, pink lizard, with fire magic and a bad temper.” She sounded pretty professional at least. At least until she abruptly paused.
Idly the ghastly mage brought the finger to her lips and voiced a puzzled thought. “...Or was it a small, pink wizard?” Her confused memories gathered into a bubble above her head, painting a picture of a bad-tempered shorty with pink hair. ...Well, maybe that was just in her imagination. Ultimately she just ended her brief lecture with a noncommittal shrug.
“Eh, either or.”

“Oh, yeah?” Bandit replied. Of course, the tone was dismissive, nigh automatic in its delivery. Inwardly, he thought it sounded like it would make an adorable pet. Though, he was hardly going to admit it.
“That sounds about right. And that's what we're after, but the colour's off. It was more... of an orange that last time I saw it.” Helios brought a finger to the tip of his chin as he dove deeper into his session of memory retrieval.
“No, no – you were correct when you said lizard.” He was quite adamant about correcting her.
“And it was around this area...” His voice became hushed and his steps far more cautious. “If we're careful, we can catch it promptly.”
"Eh," Bandit grunted, assumedly complying.

Smugness intensified when Kin received delicious praise. “Ho hum~ Of course I’m right~” She puffed her chest proudly. ...And completely ignored any suggestions or factual claims that threatened to poke holes in her inflated ego.
As much as the trickster would’ve loved to find a pink wizard, a lizard would have to do. Though if memory served, they were surprisingly fiery and grumpy creatures. Especially for something so small. Maybe she should catch an extra one and let it loose in the guild’s bedroom...
When the group leader started getting cautious, the ghostly mage followed the lead in her own way. A fading giggle chimed from her lips. Her body shimmered, slowly turning transparent... Not that it would help if she ended up scrambling over loose rocks or something.

“...We've found it.”
Helios stopped in his tracks. Legs bent, arms out, he was attempting to be as quiet as he could. It was a shame that nobody was able to execute their steps with enough elegance for the creature to not poke its head up and turn an eye directly towards the three.
“It- uh, it sees us,” Bandit stated as obvious as that was. Even so, for a moment, the one after it wanted to think otherwise.
“Shh!” And with that, it scampered off.
“Everyone! After it!” And he ran forward without confirming that anybody else was doing the same. He sprinted after it, throwing balls of fire at it. It matter not if it was hit, it did not seem to care all that much.
Bandit was running after him, but not doing anything. Just kind of watching the whole situation unfold.
“...Yeap.”

When the skittish target suddenly noticed them, the transparent mage snickered. “Hee~ You guys scared it away~” Obviously she wasn’t going to admit that her steps hadn’t been the quietest either. Stupid rocks rolling around... Oh well! She was always up for a game of tag.
While the boys ran directly after the fleeing lizard, the trickster took a different route. She picked up the pace, trying to predict where the target was headed. Natural obstacles were a nice little funnel, forcing animals and people alike into a specific direction...
Luckily that didn’t apply to ghosts.
Kin’s body shimmered with a ghostly light. Where the other three had to avoid running into anything, she just passed right through things in her path. Her plan was simple enough. She was trying to run past the lizard and suddenly appear right in front of it. Pincer maneuver~!

Bandit could only shrug with a titanic degree of dismissal. It was clear by the expression he wore on that bestial visage of his that he cared not about the whole ordeal. Of course, because it was technically a job he had taken on, he would see it through. For now, he was content chasing after Helios at the leisurely pace he was jogging at.
Helios was sprinting – but to Bandit, it was just bordering a jog if he was being generous. Perhaps it was more of a brisk walk. In all honesty, that was literally his line of thought at the time.
Helios was too busy trying far too hard to catch the creature they chased after. He was trying so hard that it looked as if he were trying to slay it more than he was trying to catch it.
“Yer gonna kill it at this rate,” Bandit warned just as Kin appeared in front of them a ways away. He looked back to confirm she was not there anymore.
“When'd she-” He started to laugh – not genuine laughter – more of a chuckle that implied that he was amused that act admittedly got that better of him.
The salamander was so stormed with surprise that it skid to a halt in a scamper. Being so quick, it easily changed directions and started in one of the two directions available to it. Its back and front were occupied by the trio, but not its sides.
“This is sorta alright. I dig this,” Bandit said.
“What am I paying you for! Do something already!”
