MISSION NAME: Alakitasian Nights
CLIENT: Ignimbrite resident
CHARACTERS: Closed Jinn Godfrey Mercy Godfrey
MISSION BRIEFING: Deliver a mysterious package to Ignimbrite If there was one thing which Mercy loved, then it was a solid adventure. Taking this mission was a no brainer. Of course, one does not simply walk into Ignimbrite. Even Mercy was smart enough to be cautious of a location as dangerous as the Salt Desert. So to combat any potential difficulties, she had dragged her eldest brother Jinn out to accompany her.
Currently, Mercy stood at the edge of the desert, with a hand on the reins of a caravan camel. The package they were to deliver was wrapped in a white cloth and strapped to the back of the beast.
"What do you think is in there?" She asked Jinn.

Jinn was just kind of... following within Mercy's wake with a lumbering walk that screamed of his fatigue. He was approaching a desert and the temperature rose to invite the trio - camel included. Mercy appeared fine, so there was a large, somewhat explainable contrast between the two in that regard.
"What do I..." he began, trailing off to allow for another pant or two. "Think? I think hot weather suuuuucks! I didn't consider heat!" He stopped and slipped out of his hunched posture, looking upwards as if relief was somewhere in the clouds - if there were any clouds present that day.
"And before anyone mentions anything!" He glanced towards the camel. It looked back with the greatest amount of apathy Jinn had seen in ages. "I know I do the whole fire thing, but my fire I don't feel. The suns? I FEEL THAT!"

Mercy could have almost felt bad for Jinn. Almost. His complaining sparked a grin from the teenager as she watched her brother's antics, as well as subsequent explanation that nobody asked for.
"Don't be such a big baby!" She said, scolding the twenty-three year old as though he was the younger of the Godfrey siblings. "Fire. Sun. Same difference." Mercy waved a hand dismissively, though the cheeky grin on her face made it obvious that she was only goading the fire mage.
"Why don't you… eat the heat or whatever it is you slayers do?"
With that unhelpful suggestion, she tugged at the leash of the camel and began walking.

“And flames don't cool, but a cold environment? Easy.” He said this right after his previous statement; but right after, a demeaning line was sent his way.
“Who's a baby?!” Jinn demanded. “I'm not a baby!” That response Jinn offered made the accusation all the more believable. His words and tone immediately betrayed him as did the fact that he briefly started stomping his feet.
With Mercy's next statement, his mood received a stark transition. He smirked instead of pouted, went silent as he prepared his reply. “A slayer?” he echoed as he ran his hands through his wild, black hair. “I was simply born this awesome. I don't know a thing about any slayer.”
He paused momentarily as a realization dawned on him.
“Didn't you ask what I thought was in there?” He stopped short of the actual question moments ago. “Well – no, but couldn't we just look and find out?”

Mercy squinted suspiciously at Jinn as he denied being a slayer but otherwise said nothing, knowing very little about the whole thing altogether. Frankly, as far as she was concerned, all magic types sucked except for Celestial Spirit magic… and the weird Odin magic which AJ harnessed.
"I suppose we could…" Mercy began, tapping her chin. "…but there's more fun in guessing!" Still, she kept an eye on the white wrapped package, about the size of a large trunk, just in case Jinn decided to unwrap it himself.
"I, for one, think it's magical artefacts!" As the thought sprung to mind, Mercy became sorely and hypocritically tempted unravel the package and see for herself. It was only the promise of monetary rewards that stopped her.
"Besides, it could be booby trapped!"

“More fun in guessing...”
He was just staring into the distance. It was questionable how much of his attention was placed in guessing what was in there. She thought there were magical items in there – artifacts, even.
After Mercy's mention of booby traps – well, not much of a reaction from Jinn ensued at all. He just made a half-heated guess.
“It's probably a sex toy for a lover in a long-distance relationship. Anyway, this place here,” he said as if nothing out of the ordinary was said at all. “Raiders like it here, monsters like it here and a camel carrying an important-looking package paints a bullseye on our backs.
“You're ready for this?” His expression was far graver than it was prior. “This is weird coming from me, but I thought I was pretty O.P., but one glance from A.J. was all it took - Well, you know how the ol' Taimuai works.” He used both hands to point directly at his eyeballs.

Mercy burst out laughing at Jinn's suggestion that package could have been a sex toy. "That dedication. I ain't even mad."
She puffed out her chest in pride as Jinn highlighted the difficulties of their mission to come. "I was born ready!" She affirmed with a nod, radiating unhesitating confidence. "I ain't afraid of no dumb monster! I'll whoop their asses so good!"
At Jinn's subsequent gesture, Mercy's sibling instincts kicked in and she reflexively swooped over with a hand to try to push Jinn's hand into his eyeballs. Just for fun.

"Stahp," he said with a flick of the wrist to turn his index finger away from himself and out towards the incoming hand. He just sort of flicked at her hand, a swat to thwart those foreseeable antics of her's.
Done with that exchange, he moved forward. He made no effort to make sure the animal followed. He just started walking as he tucked his hands into his pockets. A forward lean produced a shoddy posture, hunched as he attempted to hide from the sun smothering them in its broiling radiance.
'What if I did try to eat the heat...' he thought to himself, the evidence of such a thought appearing as a spontaneous look of Inquisition. He stuck his finger into the air ahead of him and imagined himself doing just that.
"Wait a minute, I can do that," he said to, persuasively, himself as he stared at his finger, inwardly feeling his fatigue beginning to lift.

Mercy tugged sharply at the camel's reins and followed after Jinn. The beast of burden obediently began walking forward, its hooves stirring up the sand beneath them.
Mercy stared quizzically at Jinn as the latter made an odd gesture and mumbled something to himself. Shrugging it off, Mercy began toying with the Keys around her waist, wondering if there was anything her Spirits could do to elevate the heat. As badass as she seemed, unfazed by the weather, it was only a matter of time before she could succumb to the heat.

The heat.
It got to him.
Jinn stumbled. It was like his legs gave out, lost their vigour, their strength, and as if time slackened all around him, he fell in a ceaseless moment. Before he could collide with the ground, smoke overtook his form. He disappeared into it and what came out was nothing new. It was his small, black cat form.
“Again,” he said as he lay there feline face first in the sand. It took a while before he decided to push himself onto all fours.
“I ran out of human juice.” With that said, and the situation cleared up, there was no point in not pressing forward.
“Embarrassing.”

The sand stirred beneath the Godfrey siblings. That would be the only indication that something was wrong. Before a massive sandy mound explodes from the ground immediately in front of them. It would rise skyward and continue rising until it was at the same height as Jinn. As sand cascaded down like a shower, a massive scorpion would be revealed, armoured in gleaming red-black exoskeleton and curving out from its butt would be a poisonous machete-like stinger.
Suddenly, both of the scorpion's pincers would lash out and seize each Godfrey in a crushing clamp.

Mercy watched as her brother stumbled. For a moment, concern flashed through her face as she reached towards his shirt to yank him back. But her hand found only air. Mercy squinted at the cat which had replaced her brother.
"Don't expect me to carry you only because you're now adorable." She snickered.
It was fortunate that Mercy's hand was close to her Keys. For at the first sign of danger, her hand was upon a Golden Key. She reflexively brought it up to her chest and channelled her magic through it. There was a flash of violet light and the huldra was clothed in plated purple-black armour.
It was not a moment too soon. The armour left her relatively unfazed. The scorpion's pincers might as well have clamped around an unyielding steel pillion for all the damage it did to her.
Grinning, Mercy threw her arms outwards, and unleashed an explosion of deadly venom at the scorpion's pincer.

Mercy jested, but Jinn saw it as a real possibility. “No uppsies, huh. Skimpy...” he muttered. Not long after, a fleeting moment's pass, he felt something.
“Rumbles...”
Jinn narrated as the sands beneath him began to quiver. It was hardly a warning, but more a quirk of his. Often, he uttered endearing words in his usual, monotone voice, and as the large, armoured arachnoid rose into view before him, he did the same thing once more.
“Big ol' scorpion...”
A claw clamped around him. Jinn blinked only after it all happened and grimaced as he felt his fur grow damp with his own blood. His feline brows furrowed – if he even had such a thing.
“Mercy, we can eat scorpions?”
He was certain they were eatable. Weren't they?
He rose his arms above his head after finally freeing them from the claw that kept them at his sides. Fortunately, he was no mere actual house cat. He could move in all variety of ways they could not. Also, his paws lit on fire. That was something a house cat could certainly not do.
With his flaming paws, he placed each on their own respective portion of the beast's claw and began pushing them apart. Real work was being done and such was visible on his face. Actual exertion - it was a rare sight to see, especially staining that bestial visage of his. Too often was it placid, eternally burning with an apathy that threatened to eclipse all in an endless winter of spiritlessness and indifference.
One final push and it was enough to loosen its grasp enough for him to fall onto the sands waiting below.
"Phew... that was a lot of pushing." He stood up, not on fours, but on twos. His arms displayed his un-feline flexibility by falling to their respective sides, idling there lazily.
"Since I'm already moving so much... I'll try a little bit."

It was difficult to determine the emotions from the faceless exoskeleton of the scorpion, but judging from its deafening screech, one would assume that the monster was infuriated that it failed in keeping its potential prey within its grasp.
Its right pincer got blasted by corrosive poison which ate through the exoskeleton and deep into soft flesh. Its left pincer was charred from Jinn's flaming paws.
The scorpion screeched again, rearing backwards onto its hindlegs as though ready to pounce upon the Godfreys, when instead, it dived back into the sand, burrowing itself underground with lightning speed.

Mercy possessed great confidence in her brother to know that he was more than capable of handling himself in this unexpected confrontation. She did however, arch an eyebrow at Jinn's question.
"Maybe if you were reeeeally desperate." She pondered, tapping her chin, before scrunching her nose up in disgust at the thought.
Jinn pushed himself out of the pincer. The scorpion disappeared underground as quickly as it had come. Mercy possessed enough intuition to know that the action was not to flee. At least, she hoped not. She was barely getting started.
Sand shifted underneath her feet as the monster moved around. Mercy tried to keep track of the movement so that she would pinpoint the opportune time to unleash another burst of poison. It was very difficult. Thus in the end, Mercy blindly launched a stream of corrosive poison downwards, hoping and praying to Odin that it hit.
