MISSION NAME: Sewer People CLIENT: Underbelly Inhabitants CHARACTERS: A.J. Godfrey MISSION BRIEFING: The sewer folk are willing to make a deal with Odin’s Spear and Shale Town should they help them deal with a problem. They don’t have a lot of food or supplies down there, and they lost a lot of their runners to the zombie menace. Something is pilfering their food supply, and it needs to be taken care of. Take care of it, and Odin’s Spear members will be able to use their many underground routes to their leisure. -- Over the last few weeks, Anniken had performed a lot of missions she hated the idea of. One of those tasks included wading through mud water, flies, bodies, and other wonderful décor in the Wetlands. Now, she needed to wade through excrement and navigate through tunnels inhabited by mutant creatures and mutant people to form a deal with a settlement that struggled to call itself one. After slaughtering various things in Scoria, she entered through its sewers and eventually made her way through the underground system.
Upon getting there, the first thing that greeted her was not any inkling of civilization. Rather, the Godfather was assaulted by a grotesque stench thick enough to be cut with a knife. A mix of rotting bodies, unmentionable leavings, rust, and every other sour, unpleasant malodour a person could think of. If the shortcuts weren’t valuable enough, she never would have brought herself to do this.
But she needed to, because it cut travel times and it cut costs. Therefore, Anniken climbed down the length of the ladder, made her way through shallow water and kicked rats out of the way as she proceeded in the direction of her established contact for the mission. A person who lived in here and was familiar with the locals—their so-called representative. Apprehensive as she was about this, it needed to be done. A.J. Godfrey | Post 1

”Justice, this is offensive. I’m afraid to ask, but is this truly worth the effort?” Anniken asked while she tried to prevent herself from stepping in a dense layer of unidentified muck. ”Well, the benefits are undeniable. I won’t even begin to disagree with you, this is the worst environment I have ever stepped foot in. It is as though this world harbours no pleasant location—fate truly is cruel.”
They did not hide their displeasure with the task. More refined than they used to be because of their new Demont blood, this was the last place in the continent they wanted to be in. Through their Eye, they witnessed nothing ill coming of Odin’s Spear or Shale Town should they take the opportunity, therefore they decided to step out. When there was no unwanted guests, they could be a little more liberal with their time investments.
After an episode of back and forth banter where the duo—hosting the same body because of their soul situation—tried to justified their being there instead of the comfortable headquarters they called Asgard, they eventually saw in the dingy darkness an open area. There were sparse groups of people—if you could call them that—making their way around, talking, and performing basic tasks one would see around any other community. A.J. Godfrey | Post 2

And before long, these people noticed them.
Dozens of pairs of eyes turned on the pinkette while she continued to walk in their direction without fear. She did not want to be superficial, but these people needed medical attention severely. Despite how people think she acted because of how refined she talked; she did not judge people based on their appearances. But she fostered concern for these mutants, because most of them suffered from horrible blemishes, mutations, deformities, and just outright poor health. They needed a dedicated healer, but she was not at liberty to dispense her own. Maybe she could trade them excess books they could use for teaching each other how to make some curative.
Granted, not anytime soon. She felt the distrust in their eyes. As she proceeded further into the sewers, she eventually was stopped by a lithe, balding man with green, patchwork skin sporting sickly dark blotches. Though he was missing an eye and three fingers on his left hand, he looked to be one of the healthier denizens. It was the contact she talked to through mail—which they exchanged through an abandoned mailbox in an undisclosed location—and he knew because he told her about his unique appearance. A.J. ”Y-you must b-be the one, right? M-miss Godfrey,” the man asked, his gaze shifting towards the ground. She was uncertain if this man suffered from a speech impediment, a lack of confidence, or both. Whatever it was, it had nothing to do with her objective or why she was here. Paying it no mind, the Godfather nodded in response and tried to put on her best smile. Call her superficial, but it was hard to be authentic with her smile when the stench the man gave off stung her eyes from its sheer potency. These people probably had never bathed in their entire lives and literally lived in waste.
Maybe she expected it, but it failed to make it much better.
”Yes, it is I. As much as I don’t mind pleasantries, Gerald, I would appreciate if we could handle the matter at hand as quickly as possible. The longer we dally, the higher the chance the menace will get to your stocks again and deplete your inventory,” Anniken advised, turning her attention towards where he came from. He nodded solemnly in response, and gestured for her to follow up. Obliging him, she followed behind while garnering suspicious looks from a variety of different mutants in the vicinity. A.J. The man guided her through the open space and into another tunnel. It seemed to be connected to this drainage system, and she found herself in a dead end with the mutant named Gerald. For these people to show no discomfort in the face of these conditions, their resilience impressed her. Even despite being a vampire, she retained the desire to throw up the contents of her stomach. If there was a lifeform on the planet that had foul tasting blood, it undoubtedly had to be one of these people. A good defense mechanism had she been a malicious vampire.
Their blood was rotting. She did not think that possible.
The dead end had a variety of different crates in it. The Godfathers remarked inwardly between each other about the lack of security and the poor habit of showing her to the stock; she decided that she would advise against this once it was all over to prevent others from targeting an ally easily. The man showed her the goods, and the strange tracks on the ground and even beneath the putrid water in some places. These tracks seemed fresh, as though whatever caused this visited sometime within the last hour. It meant it could not have ventured far, and she had an opportunity to chase it down. A.J. Now imbued with a sense of urgency, Anniken decided to get on the move. She bid Gerald farewell, and then started to follow that tracks. If she had to describe the tracks, she would say they were huge and suggested the being had long, slender claws or toes. They seemed to travel through the shallow water and across the hard ground. The latter made it easier to follow, while she had to look around to find more whenever it went to watery parts. Of course, her vampiric, wolfish eyes were even better in the dark than the past. The darkness failed to impede her progress.
After thirty minutes of walking through the worst conditions she ever experienced, the Godfather eventually heard a sound. A guttural growl rinsed through the environment, mixed with a high-pitched shrieking. Unable to identify what it was, she decided to make her way closer to what may have been her prey. She saw something in the shadow, but it was obscured behind a turn ahead. It seemed to be feeding on a familiar shape—and opened box it must have taken from the community about a half mile back. When it turned towards her, the first thing she saw was its beady eyes leering through the darkness. A.J. Godfrey | Post 6

”Oh. Wow, I suppose what we get is what it says right on the tin…”
With her sarcastic quip, the creature crawled closer and into sight. Before her was a massive sewer rat, mutated beyond recognition. Missing chunks of fur, flesh, sporting multiple eyes and missing the correct amount of extremities, this diseased monster the size of three lions bared its massive fangs at her in warning. This was its hoard, and it intended to defend it. In fact, she noticed it seemed to be sizing her up as though to say it was going to make a meal out of her regardless. How wrong it was.
The Godfather decided she would not use any weapons against it. Maybe she just wanted to use her Magic and get it done with as fast as possible. Unfortunately, it did look to be a monster that survived horrible conditions. Its resilience had been tested for a long period of time, and it would not go down as easily as its smaller brethren. It stomped towards her, sending a horde of smaller sewers rats scattering in all directions. Its white eyes glared in Anniken’s direction. After showing no signs of retreat, this monster was going to try and send the woman to a humiliating, watery grave. A.J. Godfrey | Post 7

Well, its tenacity aside, she doubted it ever witnessed anything as potent as her ironic Magic. The beast charged forward, gnashing its yellow fangs towards her to bite her head clean off her body. Instead of moving out of the way, Anniken used one of her recently acquired spells to ward the creature away. The moment it tried to chomp down on her, she exuded a brilliant light from her body that purged the darkness in the area in an instant. This barrier wreathed her in golden light speckled with the pigmentation of a rainbow, and stopped it dead in its tracks.
Though stopped, it continued to bite and chew against the bastion of spherical light she exuded from her body. The Godfather had no intention in engaging in any wit right now, because she doubted the entity would be able to understand at all. Instead, she raised her hand and projected several swords of light into its chest. However, the blades did not cause any physical harm to the beast. Instead, it seemed to reel back and howl in whatever constituted as pleasure for the rat. Confused, it landed on its feet, trembling and nearly being knocked prone from the sensation. The pleasure was potent enough to kill groups of men at once, but it remained steadfast. A.J. Godfrey | Post 8

The beast failed to do much damage to her barrier. Anniken invested a good amount of magical power into it, and it would remain in the face of adversity for long while. The creature went into a delirium, its confusion adding to its offensive. It tried to slash with its claws to no avail, and even whip at her with its long, prehensile tail. Holding up a single hand as though in prayer, she felt that maybe it was time to put the monster to rest before she grew bored. It continued to thrash and struggle against the light, but failed to thwart it.
A wave of light washed over the area. It startled the almost blind rat abomination, causing to back up further into the sewer network’s drainage pipe. Its sensitivity increased to the maximum, it made it a great opportunity for the woman to execute it with decisive attack. Not her strongest—she did not intend to sully her ultimate attack by using it on the filth before her.
Its form was enveloped by a bright light, which induced such a degree of pleasure in an instant that it fried mind, brain and everything associated with it. It went into a state of shock, and its lifeforce was all but blasted to nothingness. It fell to the ground with sickening thud, and an unorthodox expression she never thought she’d see from a beast such as it—a smile. A.J. Godfrey | Post 9

Anniken never wanted to do anything like that again. It was disgusting, and she needed the longest bath she has ever taken after it. As she started to make her way back, she noticed that her Magic indiscriminately obliterated every other rat in the general area. Since she went beyond and the carcasses these people loved to eat so much were not harmed externally, she would stand to gain even more favour from the sewer folk. As much as she hated to say it, she still did not want to return unless she had to use some of the shortcuts she and her guild would now be allowed to use.
The first order of business was meeting up with the contact—who served as the representative of the community and the client for the job. When she arrived back after another half hour of travel, after explaining she noticed the looks were a lot less unfriendly. Gerald seemed appreciative in his own awkward way, but she did not mind. As agreed, they had no money to give. However, they did officially provide Odin’s Spear with passage through the tunnels with no qualms from them.
As she liked to say, she then got out of Dodge. With new routes secured for the guild to use whenever they felt the need, the Godfather made her way out of the Underbelly as fast as her improved vampire physiology allowed. A.J. Godfrey | Post 10
