It was not too difficult to procure simple objects like crates, bottles... That's it. Just those two things. Settling within a squat, he placed the crate down before rising back up into an upright position. He plucked glass bottles from the ground. Earlier, he gathered them and now they lay here to fulfill their destiny - to be picked up by Ret and placed atop the crates for target practice.
Shooting into the makeshift town required an even greater amount of enthusiasm than even he had for such things. He was at a respectable level of desiring to fell things larger than him, but not enough to endanger innocent lives. So, these crates and bottles were set up facing the barbed fence. Ret would be shooting out beyond the town, lining up his shots so any stay bullets would find themselves venturing away from the establishment and not towards.
It was... still loud. He attracted some eyes, some people, have a few conversations, but ultimately just ended up testing various firearms and ammunition. He needed somebody... a little more fun and adventurous to further things along.

Rex knew this man well enough. He made a ruckus training the way he always did, with those guns of his. Even now, the sounds of shattered glass rung through the air, reaching even Rex, perched upon a small hill of metal.
I like him. He is loud.
Of course Anzu liked him. Except there was something different today about Anzu's like, a push on the back of Rex's mind, and one he didn't truly have the will to chase off today. "You want to meet him...don't you?"
Yes.
The push got even stronger, and Rex sighed, rising to his feet and hopping down to ground-level, making enough noise to catch attention even with all the gunfire. "Training well? Or hardly training?" He called out lazily, wisely staying far away from the make-shift gun range.

"Hardly training well!" he called out at the distant man. The reply was nigh instantaneous, and at first, he had yet to turn an eye towards him. The task at hand, apparently, took priority - but it only did for an approximate two or three seconds. Then, Ret looked over to him, turned and the firearm in his possession vanished. He strode over with a smirk and an eye-obscuring glare eclipsing the glass of his frames.
"You're a part of the guild, yeah?" he questioned regardless of the obviousness behind it. To him, it was not too noticeable. He did not take note of too many with his eye mostly upon one specifically.
"You wanna train too." The next thing he said was not a question. It was more of a deduction. "Right? If so, train with me - no, wait. Against me! That's the real way to get better!"
"Right, right. My name. Do you know it? I don't know yours, but mine's Reticulum. Guess I should at least get introductions out of the way!" He started laughing to himself. |

Rex could practically feel the walls of the situation falling around him. Reticulum wasn't exactly asking him, was he? Besides, there was somebody else crowing in his head, and he felt his heart beat faster in an excitement that came from the other presence in his mind.
We haven't fought in so long!
A refusal started to form on his tongue, and abruptly died, not by Anzu's will, but his own. Wasn't this great? He knew for a fact that he wasn't going to die in a spar, and Anzu wasn't wrong? When had the fought seriously in, ever? They had to be getting rusty, no, no, that wasn't good, rusty meant dead against another mage!
"...You got yourself a deal. I'm Rex. Nice to fight ya, Reticulum." His talons dug into the ground, already tense, given this guy, he expected the fight to begin at any moment, and wasn't quite sure whether the desire to begin rising in his throat was his or not.

"Alright!" The reply delighted him. That much was obvious. His tone rang with excitement. His body posture - well, he was squatting with bent arms and clenched fists as if he had just won the Grand Magic Games.

"So, the guild master was teaching me a few things. I'll try those things out!" With that, his body pivoted, so his side faced Rex. Ret's left leg lead, his right leg being the one furthest away. It looked as if Ret was about to throw hands.

"Oh, you know what?" The glasses on his face disappeared. However, there was a slight glimmer over the man's irises. "There. People tend to not like attacking people with glasses - at least not in the face. OkaynowPAWNCH!" Without warning, Ret just up and tried to punch the guy. He decided to punch him in the chest - well, attempt to. It was a standard punch, just as he had done in spars prior. Weight travelled from his right leg to his hips that turned his torso, and then he whipped his arm out with a balled fist. The attack virtually came out of nowhere, for Rex, anyhow.
Moron!
Anzu's voice pounded in his mind, childish and deep, and his arms raised in a makeshift defense...one that did basically nothing than keep him from being knocked over. Immediately, his arms seemed to explode in bright blue feathers, forcing a yelp from him before even that melted away. A black mane grew from his hair, and his mouth jutted out in a feline snout that still amazingly spoke.
"Glasses mean...nothing! Not to us!" The strange sensation of Anzu and him using a body filled him, but there wasn't any diverging views this time around. They were training, that was it.
His chest already really hurt, the "perk" of being normally human and sometimes bird, things hurt lots! Shaking out his new mane, which had thankfully grown out quickly, and only drops of scarlet littered the black fur, Rex lunged forward. He didn't move to use his fists, only his head, and opening his mouth in an ear-splitting roar as he aimed to tackle his sparring partner with his new inhuman body.

"Well, hey - I mean, that's good to know!" Glasses did not mean anything to them - wait, them? The person definitely possessed a quaint air, but his disposition was overcome by a pungent mutation in both body and mind. The oddity he nigh embodied was being wielded as a weapon and a potent one at that. Before he knew it, he was washed over by a spirit-quivering roar and a mighty tackle. The impact ran bone-deep. It proved more than enough to topple Ret over and after coming to a stop stomach-up, he sat up to place his sparing partner back into his line of view.

"Well, damn. That's - that's a pair of lungs, right there, eh?" He chuckled. There were faint tones of restiveness mingled within his words. "But lemmie guess... just a sec!"

He pulled out a rifle.

Its colour scheme was black and red. It almost looked more like a plaything than an authentic firearm. Regardless, Rex was looking down the barrel of it as Ret pulled the trigger. What tore forth from its end was a bean bag - a non-lethal bean bag. In fact, that was what was written on the side of the butt of the gun; 'non-lethal.' There was no way he was approaching a scary dude like that for close-quarters combat!

To say they were rusty now was an understatement, Rex suddenly understood as the gun was leveled at them. They didn't move as fast as they could, and pain was ripping through them too harshly, like they never felt it before. Worst of all was the lack of mental preparation for danger. This time, it was Anzu who didn't react, and given the state of their body, it was disastrous.
What the? What's that Rex?
Non-lethal or not, being shot in the face with a big gun like that hurt like crazy, and Rex's eyes widened as he felt a fang crack under the impact. Immediately, some of his Anzu features fell away, Anzu itself retreating away from the human pain. The lion-like face of Rex's almost fell away, but doggedly persisted even as Anzu's whines filled his mind.
Ow! I don't like this anymore! We're to lose!
"Just a little longer!" Rex snarled, leaping forward once more. He didn't expect victory, not the way he was, but it wouldn't hurt to push him and Anzu even more. A bellow shook the air as he took another flying leap, aiming to smack away the gun and launch himself again for another crushing tackle, though he was aware it brought him back into easy attack...

Ret found the whole ordeal very thrilling. It was exactly what he needed, or at least, that was how he felt. Requiring a flux of human and avian creature to screech at you was a strange menu item to want for. Any experience with something that could be perceived as a monster was of the utmost benefit to those who normally hunted them.

Ret noted to himself that it did appear that he was on his last legs. His guess was correct. It had been a great while since he had cross one with potent attacks as well as potent defences. It appears to always be one or the other. It was even somewhat true for him. He was just so slow and such was evident. The tackle hit and -

"GREAT SPIRIT KING, WHY!?" Ret cried. It was the most devastating tackle to date. Tackled to the ground, face to face with a snarling lion creature - well, maybe not snarling and he may have shot the lion mostly out of them. Regardless, he managed to get his feet between him and Rex and made an effort to kick him off. Pushing his feet away from him as his body utilized Rex's momentum to rock back in some variety of a reverse summersault, he attempted to cast him overtop himself and behind him.

Slammed into the ground the way he was, Rex felt Anzu childishly give up, retreating into the back of his mind where there was nothing he could do to make it come back. Anzu might as well had crossed its arms and said, I give up, the way it left him.
"Guh...Anzu?" He knew it was no use, but tried calling out to his source of power anyway, trying to rise to his feet before falling back as pain laced up his back. Anzu did not respond, "Agh! Oh, fine! Looks like I'm done." Rex mumbled out, turning his head to look upon the victor, "That really hurt, you know!"

Ret heard him speaking to someone and, to Ret, that someone was not visible. It was quite easy to deduce; it had something to do with the magic he wielded. Unbeknownst to Ret, the man was gifted the powers he used it seemed. Wizards were so rare before the Calamity. With the population violently transitioning from billions to about one-hundred thousand, the likes of the two sharing each other's company were exceedingly rare.
Yet, here they were and both appeared to possess unfathomable potential. Ret broke out into hearty laughter, nigh maniacal, after the mention of his attacks being painful.
"You're joking, right?!" he asked with a jovial tone. "Back there, you hit me so hard I went blind for a second! Nobody's hit me that hard before. Literally!" He spoke as he offered the man a hand up if he had not gotten up already of his own accord.

Rex barked out a laugh as he took the offered hand, brushing himself off as he stood up, "Please, I couldn't even dodge a simple punch, I'm really rusty." He praised back, relaxing slightly as he realized that the fight was really over. It didn't feel bad...honestly.
Our magic...
Rex's smile fell away, and his eyes narrowed as he remembered the circumstances of his own magical abilities. "I...well, it's just not real magic...dammit." He trailed off, already feeling stupid trying to explain, and feeling the familiar shame if trying to relate that he did nothing magical.
We share.
Right, right, that's how it was. Sure Anzu. "It's like I got a brat right in my head with me...ok...ok, a helpful brat, sheesh." He sighed as he brought a hand up to his very human mouth, "Everything you saw there, my feet, the face that was the brat, we share this body." He abruptly turned around, already frowning with the idea. He was impressive, but it was really Anzu, that was it.

"Yeah, I agree. It ain't real magic," he began with an all-too telling smirk. "It's real COOL magic." The statement was followed up with a wink. He was likely well aware the comment was not going to be well received. There was hardly much wit to it, but he did find it at least a little clever. The fact kept the corners of his mouth hoisted up.
"Oh, that's pretty cool." He did not sound disinterested, but not surprised either. To the likes of Ret, it was not something unheard of. In fact, he may have something in common with the guild master herself. "I guess if you really wanna do things on your own, it could be annoying. Personally, though, I like the idea of givin' control over t' someone else and having them deal with messes like this; BUT! I do like shooting things!"
So, he contradicted himself. However, it did appear that he understood the idea and surely, understood that some might prefer to tackle the frightening, cruel world Earthland had become with borrowed magic just like that one. |

Rex wasn't quite sure what he was expecting, some kind of disgust or disbelief? Either way, he knew everybody always had something to say about his situation. The best he could get was weird, the worst? Some kind of monster, or demon. Thus, the calm way Reticulum reacted clearly drew some confusion from Rex, who recovered quickly enough, but his eyes swam in expectation and confusion. "Really? Cool?"
I like this man
And now Anzu was back to share a mix of confusion and muted happiness. "Yeah...it can be pretty convenient, but not if we're both rusty, seeing what just happened." He snickered at his and Anzu's poor performance, following up with his own question about his sparring partner, "You like shooting things? Then I guess we can do this again, when we can dodge one of those shots, we'll be better than before."

"Rusty, eh?" Ret began as he temporarily turned his attention elsewhere. There was just one glass bottle beckoning him. It was the last one he left standing before he felt compelled to make his way over to Rex only a few moments ago. A 9mm caliber found itself within Ret's grasp and the bottle found itself within the firearm's sights.
Squeezing the trigger resulted in a distant eruption of shattered glass and, of course, a satisfied, devilish grin. From Rex's point of view, Ret's face was little more than a cluster of black hair.
"I guess we're both in the same boat, then." He turned his attention back towards Rex and allowed the embodied tool to fade back into mere potentiality. "But good! This is a strong guild from the looks of it. It's good to see its members focused on bettering themselves! Who knows, one day Odin Spear will be synonymous with guild!" He chuckled briefly, but spoke in a manner that appeared to distance himself from the actual guild itself. |
