And there was the finish line.
Topaz seemed surprised by Kin's game plan; surprised enough to fall for his tail being yanked. It caused him to lose much ground as the the trees parted into a small expanse where a stone-bricked cottage sat nestled within the woodland. It was fairly large and possessed an appearance greatly contrasting the village huts. The homely air was potent upon laying eyes on the building. As for its traffic – none appeared to be outside of it.
“You beat me here! Why didn't I think of that?!” he asked in disbelief, throwing his arms into the air and twirling around. He allowed himself to fall into a mussy sitting position and pouted.
“But here it is!” He motioned to the building. It was, indeed, Cait Shelter. She was suspicious of deceit, of ambush, but signs of any such thing were painfully lacking. The door beckoned. It was what she desired – entry into the guild and Topaz was offering it. He rose to his feet and with renewed vigour, skipped over to the door.
“Might as well come in now!”
(If entering, would be continued in here in a new thread~)

Topaz snickered. Was it because Orion said 'ass?' Or maybe he just liked the wording. That was up to Orion's imagination. However, he did seem pretty amused all the way until some self criticism was made.
“Hm?” For a moment, it appeared as if Topaz did not even understand what was said with the pure, unbridled confusion tinging his inquisitive reply. “You think so?” It was fairly clear that Topaz did not agree, but was open for further elaboration. He was not one to believe himself infallible.
“I think that's how people are, though, right? It's like things just happen to me and then it just leads to me doing stuff for others. Maybe I'm the same way, but weird stuff just keeps happening!”
It was a strange point trying to be made. Topaz was suggesting that maybe he was just as selfish, but the events in his life skewed things in such a way that it appeared like he was being selfless. The guild was 'inherited' and they filled it with like minds for company. Was that selfless or selfish? He asked him just that. “This guild was Sylvia's home, but then she passed away. We took care of it and then made it a guild, but really I guess we just wanted some cool people to hang out with.”

“Mhm,” he replied. It was not satire, but neither was it overly enthusiastic. Something akin to a thorn protruded from his innocent, agreeable thrumming. Subtle, but his unchanging stare ahead, the nigh sightless gaze seizing nothing in its path – he was thinking about something and its relevance must have had to do with the guild being 'helpful.'
“Easy!” A shift in subject. At that point, it was time for a spontaneous race. He felt confident; so much so that his face adopted a smiling impishness. “I can totally get there before you do, but you're welcome to try to beat me!” And with that, Topaz turned, aligning himself with the assumed destination and started running. It was a playful gallop and he even found the time to look back. He wished to see if she really was trying to race him and if so, how far of a lead he managed to acquire.
“I kinda feel bad!” he shouted with his attention returned ahead of him. “You made a super big mistake and that is I know where it is, but you don't! If you run ahead, you can't follow me anymore!” Topaz was very amused at his discovery.

“Oh, you did?” His interest was perked. He reeled his line in, maintaining eye contact all the while. It showed the glutenous quality of his attention. For whatever reason, Topaz ventured towards a discussion less blithesome than usual. Perhaps there was a little more burred beneath his happy-go-lucky front. He was born into a dying world. There was no way he was, in actuality, a carefree kitty cat – but it was nice to be thought as such. Topaz enjoyed when people forgot about the world around them – at least for long enough for him to be able to fix before their attention returns to it.
An accepting smile was his initial reply to Orion's story. “And that's okay, I think. Maybe they already have a place they consider a home – or maybe they really are lookin' for more. More of what, though, right? Probably somethin' like... purpose.”
“But you're good!” Topaz was not quite as agreeable with the last part. “Anything the guild asks from you would be easy for you to do!” What made Topaz think so? Did Topaz know much about Orion? It was the obvious stuff. He was a large, muscular man with a devil-may-care atmosphere forever following him. His whole vice bleed strength.

“It's enough to scrape by and be kinda happy sorta.” It was a childly way to put it. Topaz did not see much wrong with placing the majority of one's concern in themselves and then those close to them. “That could be enough for some, but for me – not after Sylvia told us those stories of the past. These guilds don't sound like the ones she was talking about...”
Topaz's pole was still, the line even stiller. His luck was waning in regards to fish catching. It contrast, Orion seemed to have encountered something on the end of his line. Perhaps it was because Topaz's thoughts were elsewhere – but not only elsewhere, but unable to gather to form anything of note. Solutions, strategy, further elaboration – anything.
He closed his eyes. “Mm. All of that's too big for lil' ol' me, anyway. At least it is how I am now. That's how I feel.” Reopening them, a familiar smile was back in place. “Things are pretty good back at the guild. It's kinda greedy to want even more than that.”

Just for a moment, Topaz went silent. He flicked a finger up and the end of Orion's cigarette lit up with only a small flame erupting before fading out of existence. It was a lot better than previous attempts where the whole of the item nearly went up.
Just momentarily, Topaz did not respond to Koji's presence. Just a second or two, but then turned a warm expression his way. “The watermelon was pretty spiffy! Very, very watery! And you know what? I think there was a some melon in there, too!”
“Okay!” Topaz erupted. “So, ghost stories! Who has ghost stories? Real ones, of course. Nobody wants to hear any fake ones!” Topaz wagged a finger as if his proposal had already been accepted. It could not have been. He was too stingy to give anybody the time to properly reply.

He flared a shroud of flames around him. What ferocity was lost returned as the flames licked at the encompassing, sweltering air around him. What words were cast his way rinsed him over without stirring the creature. They were upon deaf ears as he stared down the large creature. It was being wrestled with by the woman's giant wolf as he took the slightest moment of respite. [break][break] Just from the ire soaking the being through, it suggested that the time it was taking to fell the beast was unacceptable. It was large, somewhat bulky, but even still, he expected it to fall to the wayside after even one of its attacks was felt. "Stubborn..." he spat to himself in a mutter, volume low and tone soaked with loathing. [break][break] He threw something. The motion was quick, snappy, and dismissive. A simple ball of flame was thrown at the beast and a collision would spawn an eruption of concussive force and billowing, short-lived fire as it dispersed feverishly into the air. “You won't take me in? But I'm so small, you wouldn't even know I'm here!” Topaz had an alien sense of humour in the way that he did not have a specific, discernible tone for when he was joking or being serious. With his response, it sounded like your usual coaxing attempt, plump with a whiny plea tinging the treble-heavy words.
Topaz returned to fishing alongside his response, which were strangely chipper, but somewhat cold at the same time. “Well, mostly outside of the village, anyway!” He was, of course, speaking about the mythical beast threat that was not exactly a nuance or a rare encounter, but something that appeared to be in the final phase of ending what remained of the world.
“Definitely not! Not yet! It seems to be why a lot of guilds reformed!” Topaz pouted. Finally. “It seems like my brother's all about friends and family and whatnot and that's great!; but that's no reason to gather powerful magic users. Y' don't need to be a mage to be a friend.” He turned his eye to Orion and for once, not a shred of frivolousness stained his bestial visage.
“I'm gathering wizards like other guilds to make a final stand. We do well enough and the world's ours again.”

It was always nice to hear compliments. It was even nicer when somebody agreed with your self-made compliments. It validated it. It made it more than jest-veiled bait for validation. It made it authentic and it lent wondrous fuel to his perpetual smile. There was not much response to her agreeing that his cuteness transcended the tribesmen. It was more like placing additional coins into an arcade machine to keep the glad game going.
He stopped dead in his tracks, abrupt and easily startling.
“What's my guild like?!” He echoed, turning around and washing Kin over with an expression twisted in bliss and anticipation for something favourable.
“We take in wizards seeking refuge! Treat them with medicines if they need it, hang out and eat whatever we can find! Sometimes I help with the unloading of fruit when they get any and sometimes they give me some stuff to take back to the guild. They're pretty nice like that as long as I do somethin' for 'em. And we try to beat those monsters up that's swammin' the place. Kinda surprising only those little fish people popped up. Nothing that wanted to eat us this time. Lucky!”

The smothering lull brought Koji to consciousness. However, the far-more lax Topaz appeared to sense little a miss. His continued slumber with no signs of immediate conclusion was evidence enough. Koji's waking was a solitary one. His re-dressing, his attention falling upon the still-closed door of the home's owner – it all happened beside Topaz who only stirred when an effort was made to do so.
“Mm?” The vague awareness of a question evoked an inquisitive utterance from Topaz who drew himself into an upright sitting position. His eyes were still closed, but opened ever-so slightly as if keep his foot in slumber's door. Closing them again could easily lull him back into the period of sleep he had only just abandoned moments ago.
When he processed words he thought he'd missed completely, waking took him in an instant and his eyes were open enough to draw balled, fur-paved fists to the corners of his eyes. In case anything accumulated, he swept them free of whatever could have possibly conglomerated there. “Something's not right?” he reverberated with an envious obviousness.
“What do you mean?”

"Oops!" The fish was drawn up off of his face with the utmost degree of care. A slow, gradual, steady increase in elevation until the face was free of fish. Topaz pulled it towards him while listening to Orion's request. It was difficult to tell if he really was thinking about eating the fish right then and there. He managed to simply place it into a crude, small crate Topaz brought with him there.
"Well, dogs are fine, I suppose," he compromised. "But that's a great name for a dog, yes! I agree!" The name rang true for Topaz and it did not appear he was against the idea of having a pet dog. Perhaps, rather, the topic had just left him by then. He was never one to dwell on much, if anything. A new thought entering his head pushed other matters to the side with great ease.
"Anything yet for you?" He caught one fish. He was uncertain if there was anything more than that one fish. "Come to think of it, how many are we trying to catch?"

Well, Orion answered the question, anyway.
"You know!" Topaz piped up after a nearby voice began to trail off, all too willing to insert an answer of his own crafting. "We're here to help!" That was a guild at its most basic level. That was for sure. It was like there was some variety of inner happiness that greatly hindered his ability to say anything of any actual depth.
"Those people out in that tribe out there aren't magic like us and oh, BOY! Isn't magic ever useful against those monsters!" The card game concluded. He won a hand against another hand opposite to his own. He finally won a game against the best poker player in the world; the phantom poker player. Nobody could see them because they didn't exist.
At some point, he thanked Koji with a giant Topaz-like smile and started biting into the pink-hued, triangled-shaped mass of water. "Mm! It's so great! We're lucky to have stuff like this!"

"Hm! Yeah! But dogs are dumb, so, there y' go!" To Topaz, this response was not even refutable. The logic was ironclad. "But I could be wrong. Are we talkin' about those things that forget the tails attached to them?" It was a definite moment of history being made. Topaz was wielding sarcasm. It was likely the first time he had done it. One would wonder if he knew what satire was at all until that point.
And he wrestled with the fish. There was an appreciation for peace going on while he did. "Yeah, me too," he said between grunts and quickened speech as a result of his acute focus. "We often get interrupted by monsters when doing stuff like this, but not...TODAY!"
And Topaz pulled the fish straight out of the water. Time seemed to slacken as he gazed up at the airborne fish, still tethered tot he hook. It had a nice direction to it. It would not land back in the water. However, it did start to fall towards his partner's head.

Free affections were delivery upon a giggling Topaz. The air of adorability intensified, threatened to swallow the tribal jungle whole. With his mood so elevated from a generous portion of attention and warmness bestowed upon him, he gladly answered Kin with an enthusiastic nod.
"I can totally show you around!" He looked around to gain his bearings. "Well, the village - we don't bother with it too much. We mostly stay in the guild. The village's got a big tribe living in it. I don't want to be mean, but I think I'm a lot cuter than the tribesmen." By then, he was already walking elsewhere. He did venture away from the stream and towards paths where one could look out at the various huts. Some distant traffic could be seen as they walked.
"I was told about an era where all the buildings looked like what our guild looks like! These are only what everyone's managing to build right now with all these monster attacks and raids going on. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it, but all we have to do is do what we did in the past then! It's easy!"
