Gerard Knight was an honest and steadfast man. His love for the nation urged him to join the force. And unfortunately, he equated patriotism to devotion to the government. So, no matter what was asked of him, he believed it was for the greater good and followed his orders obediently. When the people and the guilds rebelled, he was asked to fight against them. He did not like the state of things, but he obeyed. Until his last breath—which came soon amidst the chaotic war—he believed his government was for the people.
[break][break]
Millions perished and when the dust settled, those who remained began to band together. Not everyone was welcome in every group, however. Gerard’s wife, Ayumi, and her son, Derek, were shunned by most for their association with Gerard, whom the community knew was part of the government’s force. Raising her son amidst the hatred was no easy task, but she somehow did manage. Ayumi was a healer and even those who hated her could not refuse the fact that she was very good at what she did. Perhaps her talent was the only reason they were not murdered in their sleep.
[break][break]
Years passed and despite the odds, Derek did find love. Katherine was a rare and precious girl. She loved Derek for who he was and could not care less about his father’s association in the past. Now, they were three. And soon enough, they became four.
[break][break]
Harold Knight is the first child of Derek and Katherine Knight. Mostly isolated from the outside world, for the family did not wish to expose the child to neither the undeserved hatred nor the violent beasts, Harold was raised primarily by his grandmother Ayumi. He began learning the healing arts from her even before he learnt to read. Both his mother and father were hunters, and they were out in the wild more often than not, leaving him with his grandmother.
[break][break]
Ayumi told Harold many stories. But the ones he loved were those of his grandfather. She spoke of Gerard as the man he was and not the man the world saw. She narrated the heroic deeds of her beloved; the quests he took on as a defender of the innocents. In his early years, hearing these stories, Gerard was Harold’s hero; the one he aspired to be.
[break][break]
Of course, that did not last long. He wasn’t a child forever. Eventually, he grew up and had to leave the house. When he did, he learnt what the world thought of his grandfather. While it was a shocking revelation, he still could not bring himself to hate the man; especially after Ayumi convinced him that Gerard was gullible, but not bad.
[break][break]
Harold is now twenty-one. He has a younger brother, who is turning fifteen soon. His parents still hunt, and he has taken over the clinic from his grandmother, who passed away peacefully a few years ago. He drowns himself in the busy routine at the clinic. Occasionally, he joins his parents in their hunt, and the deep forest is the only place where he had allowed himself to use his magic extensively so far. He acts content and happy, but he is not.
[break][break]
His aspiration to be a defender like his grandfather when he was a child is still not dead. The war has left the land torn, with vile men and beasts on the prowl. There is a burning desire within him to help bring peace and order, but he has no clue how. The government before may have been corrupt. But a society without a governing body and authorized enforcers is a ticking bomb.
[break][break]
To save Earthlanders from themselves and from the beasts that haunt them, it needs a new administration. One that brings the guilds together, that protects the people, and is immune to the pitfalls of greed and corruption. And it is Harold’s dream to build such a government.
