"I don't mind doing the heavy-lifting. Better me than you, since I can just eat lightning to stave off the infection...I think?" Orion had not really tested his lightning eating theory, having consumed lightning before, but unsure whether it affected healing diseases as well. Well, what better way to try it out, right?
With a silent nod, Orion took off the banner-like shoulder wear he had. It had the guild insignia on it, but it was also old. It could do with a wash as well. Then out of nowhere, Cheshire threw her own shirt at him. He blinked once. Twice. Then he blushed just a tiny bit. Cheshire was an attractive woman, nobody can deny that. But she...her...yeah, nobody can deny her feminine charm was on point.
"Thanks...uh...yeah..." Orion muttered, before starting to grab the corpses. They needed to pile them neatly, before covering them and hauling them back. A cart would be ideal, maybe one of the mine carts they saw earlier during their trek down.
"You see these? There are more than just the children, these corpses are too big." Orion observed, "These are adults." They must be some miners from before, they were also corrupted by the creature, but even more so.

"Can you eat lightning to heal up?" Orion cheekily grinned, before getting back to work.They had all the bodies now, at least all of the most visible ones. Orion had been careful to only grab parts that were semi-corrupted, those that can be cleansed by a simple priest, hopefully. The burial would be an important factor in the cleansing of these parts, and Orion knew at least that priest knew a little about cleansing magic. It was in their job description, after all.
"Let me grab a cart so we can haul them back easier." Orion quickly jogged towards the nearest cart, and dragged it to their position. It was rusty, but the wheels worked, and the whole thing still seemed like it can go for another hundred years.
Then Orion started piling the bodies into the cart. It would be easier this way, just pushing the things back up into the surface. Less hassle, less grime.
"Whenever you're ready." Orion nodded to Cheshire. He was ready to start pulling the cart back up to the surface, and face the crowd that most likely will be looking for their return. For their children's return.

Because she walked ahead of the male, her guild mark would've been in plain view, and whether or not he chose to comment on it, that was entirely up to him. There wouldn't be a parade like the one they had in Gabbro City when they've slain the direwolf that's plagued them for months. Orion grinned, although it didn't really reach his eyes. The problem was that Orion didn't think the alcohol could drown this memory. The alcohol would help ease him, but the horror will stick to the man for a very long time. The faces of those children will stare at him in every one of his nightmares.
"You know what awaits us up there, right?" Orion idly asked. They were very close to the entrance now. Orion glanced towards the woman, and noticed her guild mark. He knew what it was, Odin's Spear, a group of very distinguished fellows in Shale. He'd ask about that later.
For now, he looked onward as they reached the end of the tunnel.

Other kids and parents around her often wondered why she was moody and aloof - well, when you're being fed scenes of yourself dying in various gruesome ways over and over, it's likely you'd feel the same.[break][break] But the faces of those children - that was something else entirely. Something that'd haunt her for years to come.[break][break] There's still a ways to go even after the duo managed to successfully make it out of the mining tunnels. They'd take a moment of rest after the light of the sun grazed their faces, as if welcoming them back into the world of the living. "I suppose drinking to forget might be one way to deal with it." Orion acquiesced to the woman's suggestion, before slowly making their way towards the entrance. "I would offer to buy you a drink, if you'd like to at least, later on." He was going to have some anyways, so why not have company with him as he went about drinking himself to sleep tonight.
Then they reached the entrance, and Orion stopped them. He was nervous. The pain he would feel would compound once he sees the mother's crying out for their children. It would compound and he might just break from the pressure. And so he steeled himself.
"Okay, no more avoiding. Let's go." As they got through the entrance, they spotted a small crowd of people. As sure as Orion predicted, wails started. The parents. They were the ones who were the worst off. Unlike their children, they would continue to live with the pain.
"This is..." Orion carefully maneuvered the cart towards the attending priest of the village, instead of towards the parents, "The priest will be a better choice. The parents don't need to see them..." He wasn't sure if it was a good choice, but it needed to be done nonetheless. He'd rather the parents remember their children as who they were, not what they became.

Orion listened the explanation Cheshire gave them. It was correct, very precise, and without any blemishes. Orion couldn't have done better with it at all. The truth was the truth, and there was no sugar coating it. The parents knew everything, and the mages did their part. Nothing more, nothing less.
"We also advise everyone to stay away from the site. We encountered an aberration inside the mines, and while we defeated it, we can't guarantee that there aren't any more lurking around. Be advised, they are really strong."
Orion can't stress that enough. These people will most likely try to go in, to seek revenge for their children. They were wasting their time, and most likely, their lives. They were not mages. They were not equipped to handle situations like these.
"Chesh, we should go with the priest for the purification." Orion pointed towards the priest who was already carting the bodies somewhere that was more isolated for the ritual. It was a simple prayer, and light magic was used, but nothing too spectacular.

Orion went along with what Cheshire told the citizens. It was reasonable, and she knew what she was doing. If there was a brain in this operation, it would be more her thing than Orion. Orion was the brawn in this operation. He wasn't shy to admit that, at least.
"Bless the bodies first, over there." Orion pointed to a patch of grass just along the side of the church. It was still sacred grounds, however it wasn't within the church itself. The place would be good enough for the ritual. Hopefully it doesn't kill the land around it.
Orion helped the men unload the bodies as gently as they could. "Wrap your hands and arms, or you will die." The man was blunt. This sickness, it was unnatural, and nothing here can cure it. These people, they didn't need more deaths today.
"You can begin when you're ready, father."

Orion watched the proceedings, wary of anything that might happen. He was not a religious man himself, funnily enough since he was supposed to be a god slayer, a believer in the deities. No, he never prayed, nor did he believe. He had seen too much shit in this world to believe in some divine power. What he did believe, however, was light magic.
"Careful, back! Back! Cheshire, pull them back!" Orion quickly quarantined the area. The fire was burning, but there was a problem: the earth itself was receiving the corruption. It bled onto the surface, and Orion had to push people away from its grasp.
"Priest! Light magic, now!" the god slayer frantically kept the men, women, and children away from the corrupted earth. He would not fail these people, not after he'd already failed them once.
