Koji's eye remained closed. The feline's body was coursing with magical energy, Japanese characters and words flashing and glowing across his fur, illuminating and visible through his orange jacket. He did not respond to Orion's questions at first, remaining on the ground until his panting began to improve into laboured breathing.

Silence stretched between them for a long time, long enough for a bystander to think that Koji had not heard Orion's question at all. His face was obscured by his hood.

Then, he spoke, his voice low and weary as though he had aged many years. "I promised your mother I would take care of you." He said, barely more than a whisper. Flashing across hi mind were memories of the kind mage who came to Cait Shelter with a child – barely a boy then.

"Orion…" Koji lifted his head and when he opened his single eye, it was brimming with unshed tears.

"I don't know if I can keep that promise for much longer."

There was a pregnant pause, Orion absorbing what the cat-mage had said. He stared at his master, the memories of his mother plaguing his thoughts now. For a long time, he had been able to keep that face at bay. She had been the light to his shadow, and she was now gone.
And that promise.
"What are you talking about?" Orion chuckled nervously, "You know it's been awhile since I've needed protection." He has improved leaps and bounds since he first started. With every mission, every training session, he was growing stronger.
"You don't need to keep that promise, master," he stared hard at the cat, before asking, "Why? Is there something wrong?"
The way that his master was acting had not been normal. There definitely was something up. He would wait for the answer, no matter how long it took for Koji to articulate it. After being attacked like that, he deserved to know.

The progress and innocence at which Orion exhibited only made Koji's heart ache further. Whether it was with pride or with regret it was impossible to determine.
"You've proven yourself today." Koji agreed quietly. "That you can protect yourself."
With that he felt silent and shakily pulled himself backwards to sit cross-legged on the training ground floor.
"I don't have long left, Orion." The feline said. "Promise me, you will protect the guild." His subdued voice turned hard as he stared at Orion with his one good eye.

Orion would have made fun of his master for the silly joke he made. The old Orion would laugh out loud, thinking everything was a joke, and that his master was playing a prank on him. The old Orion would have shook his head, denied his master's ramblings as one of those who were slowly losing their minds from old age.
But Orion had changed. He had seen the world, felt its corruption, battled its abominations. He had faced so much, and understood that he still knew so little. But, he understood enough.
"Not long..." Orion muttered under his breath, "Are you sure? Is there...." Orion choked, his tears threatening to break, but he held strong, "How do you know? Is there anything we can do?"
Orion stared at the man, heart aching, and soul crushed.

Koji's concerns remained unassuaged as Orion did not immediately commit to the promise, instead inquiring further about Koji's limited vitality. The guild master sighed softly and did not respond to the questions. Instead, he simply shook his head as he rose shakily to his feet to depart the training grounds and return to the Cait Shelter cottage.
It broke his heart to that the lightning mage was able to yet accept the news. But not as much as the confirmation that he had failed the test.
"Goodbye Orion…"
