MISSION NAME: there and back again CLIENT: the Ajedrez heir, Michael CHARACTERS: Orion Prima MISSION BRIEFING: the Ajedrez family was impressed with Orion's retrieval of their sword, that the heir hired the mage once again to accompany them on a return trip. this time, they are prepared with a small company of mages.
Orion had not been too happy with this request. No, definitely not happy as he watched a small group of mages hired by the Ajedrez heir milling about their camp site. He was back in this horrid place once again. Stalagmite Wastes was not the place he envisioned himself to be in, and he almost turned down the offer. But, work was work, and he needed everything he could get at this point in time.
"Why are we still here?" Orion asked one of the passing mages, who only glanced at him and replied swiftly, "Waiting for one more mage, a strong one, apparently." The man did not stay afterwards, opting to go talk to his friends. Orion was the only one not socializing. He found no reason to. He just wanted for this mission to be done as soon as possible. Whatever Michael Ajedrez was looking for in that dark tower seemed to be worth another expedition, even when the last one almost cost him his life.
There was loud chattering now, and the small group seemed to part. He could hear his patron laughing out loud and boisterously talking to another person. Older, from what he could tell. The voice was deep, and stern, a contrast to the Ajedrez heir's own jolly tune. The crowd of independent mages hired seemed to finally fully separate onto two sides letting the small procession pass them towards Orion's spot.
"You have got to be fucking with me," Orion cursed, finally getting a glimpse of the last mage they had been waiting for.

There was a time when Orion would have just upped and left when he saw what he saw. It was a ghost of his past. A memory best forgotten, and thrown into the abyss. The chances of seeing this hellish ghoul had been a million to one, yet he was the lucky one and won the lottery of the wretched ilk. The mage standing before him made him seethe in anger, as much as he was repulsed by his existence.
"Dad."
"Orion."
Orion stared at the man he had the privilege to call father. Tall, tan, and bulky, Antares Prima looked to be in the prime of his life. Certainly, he did not look over the age of fourty, yet this man was nearing his mid-fifties at this point. Lavishly dressed in leather and fur, he wore the Prima crest proudly on his right breast. He had not changed at all since the last time Orion had seen the man. Still haughty and proud, except he wasn't on the floor being beaten by his debtors.
"Didn't know you were under the payroll of the Ajedrez family," Orion shook his head, "You know what, I don't care. Let's get this show on the road." The lightning god slayer shook his head and made his way past the two. The sooner they got this done, the better.

there and back again [solo mission]

There were things he didn't like in this world. He didn't like pineapples. But he liked pineapple pizza. He didn't like ghosts. But he was not afraid of ghost stories. He didn't like his father. But he was now stuck with the man until this mission was over. There were many things Orion disliked, and out of all of them, his father was on top of the list. Lady Luck just seemed to be smiling on him today, by having his father be on the same mission, of all the available missions out there.
"Fuckin' piece of-" Orion cursed to himself, but was stopped by a hand grabbing his shoulder. He took one look at the person who did, and shoved the hand away, "You keep your hands to yourself." He was being polite, as polite a man can be with his estranged father. Antares Prima only looked at his son, face stone cold, just like how he remembered.
"You should know, I looked everywhe-."
"Not the place nor time." Orion shuffled ahead of the group, not willing to listen to his father's drivel. The man was a chronic liar, more drowned in booze than Orion, and was hooked to gambling. In his mind, Antares Prima was a man without honour. A man who left his family alone to die.
The cold battered the group, and soon, they were all forced to slow down for the day. They had set a brisk pace towards the dark tower, but were still nowhere close to the aforementioned mountain. They needed a break, and having a small group meant they could not take unnecessary risks. Orion agreed. For once, the Ajedrez heir was using his brain.
So, with a heavy-hearted sigh, he made his own small corner on the rocky group, rested between two boulders. This was his space, and he intended to keep it. Away from the group. Away from his father.

It had been a good decision to stop, because snow fell quite heavily a few hours later. The flat ground they had made camp in had slowly been invaded by the powdery snow. Snow, everywhere. Orion hated every single moment of it. The last time he was here, he had also been attacked by a snowstorm, and his opinion has not changed a bit: "Fuck this place."
They had resumed their march, slowly making their way towards the mountain. The shadow of it was seen not an hour ago, and they seemed to be no closer to it then they were at first sight. The group was harried, faces were grim, and moral was low. The Ajedrez heir still held his head aloft, with snow having already crowned his head with bitter cold. He and Antares Prima were the only two seemingly unaffected by the gloomy weather battering them.
"I have been avoiding you for a reason." Orion bit back a curse as he felt his father step in-line with him. The man was relentless in his pursuit to talk to his son, but Orion did not want any of his space being shared by the man. "And you know the reason."
Antares looked at his son, and said in a somber tone, "Change is the only absolute truth in life, and I have changed for the better, the question is: how long will you hold that rock, grounding you to the past, until you're forced to face me."
The question stunned Orion for a moment, but he was given not time to answer. The mountain had gotten clearer. The snowstorm suddenly lifted from their midst, and the fearsome stature of rock and stone filled their gaze. They were very close.

there and back again [solo mission]

Life had a way of reminding you of the past. For Orion, his father's words echoed in his mind for the next hour, repeating each syllable without pause. Orion grimaced, forced to agree with his father. Change was the only constant in this world. He was right about that, and more. The rock, grounding him, anchoring him securely to the past, was a fact. He knew it from the start. The memory of his father drove him to be a mage. The memory of his father egged him on to be a better person. He was stuck in the past, and he was angry that it was his father who reminded him of it. How could the man know? How dare the man try to lecture the son he had left behind.
"Breathe, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven," Orion counted to himself, reigning in his emotions. His father kept pace with him still, although ignoring him now. He knew what the man was doing. Antares was patient, and was waiting for Orion to break the silence. He was-
"You know, I'm not waiting for you to talk to me or anything. I just want to spend some time with my son, who I've not seen forever." Antares did not even look at Orion, but he knew.
Orion grunted, "So what do you want? A hug? A 'welcome back father'card? Where have you been all these years, after abandoning me and mother? Where were we were hungry, starving, begging in the streets? Where were you when she died?" the god slayer heaved-in a large breath, before releasing it.
"That's what I wanted to tell you." There was a roar, and then a wyvern twice the size of the one Orion had seen the last time he was here landed in front of the group, thinking that the group of humans were easy prey. "I'll just show you." Without pause, Antares Prima leaped forward and brought his arms out wide then shouted, "Thunder God's Halberd!" No sooner did the spell strike the wyvern, the man held his hand out and clenched his fist, "Detonate!"
A blinding light.

There were no words to describe Orion's reaction. "What the fuck?" Antares watched his son curse out loud, and couldn't suppress a feral grin. Orion had thought he had been the only God Slayer in existence, it seems it wasn't so. There was another, more powerful one, and it was his own father. The thought boggled him. It couldn't be real. No, there should only be one God Slayer at a time. Or was that rule made-up because God Slayers were so rare? Orion was now mindblown.
"I know you have a lot of questions, but it will be answered in due time."
Orion gaped at the man, before sighing. He will get his answers sooner or later. For now, the deceased wyvern made for a great snack. It was, after all, fried to crisps by his own father. The meat will be crunchy, and will warm their bellies. The stop was brief though, and soon they were back at it again. This time, with a hurried pace. The mountain grows ever close, and they wanted to get there sooner rather than later.
It took about four hours. But they had finally reached the mountain-path. The staircase carved on the side of the mountain stood alone, silent in its wake. The group did not falter, and quickly made their way upwards. This was not their first rodeo, at least not the Ajedrez heir's nor was it Orion's. There was no danger from here on out, until at least the cave.
"If you're wondering, we will be using the cave. It is a path that leads underneath the tower, where the item we are here for lays resting."
So the tunnel was a passage, most likely a secret one that had it's doors weathered away by the elements. Orion just nodded, following in his father's footsteps as they made their way upwards. He will get his answers soon enough, no matter what.

The walk was much more peaceful than when Orion was last here. It seems as though that the battle of his father had deterred any other creatures from disturbing them. It was great, except for the fact that the weather seemed to have missed its memo. The snow battered their group continuously, relentless and unforgiving. Orion held his own at the back of the group, watching the ones in front stumble every few steps. It made him chuckle.
"Almost there..." Orion muttered to himself. The Ajedrez heir and Antares Prima took the point, and were carving the way up. If there was one thing Orion can say about Michael Ajedrez, it is the fact that the man was stubborn. Falling over every few steps, the man kept getting back up and sloughing forward with determination.
"We're here!"
Orion paused, and found the cave entrance to be just ahead of them. It was just the way he remembered it, except for the fact that he could see how chunks of the mouth had been hammered away by the giant polar bears he had led to death. It seems they had tried to break, and had hit the cave mouth before colliding with the wyvern.
"Guess we're camping here." Orion sat himself down near the entrance, watching the group make their small camp. He was approached by his father, who sat down beside him, "That book," Antares started, "that you learned our magic from was mine. Our family's. Lost for a long time until I found it. It's yours now." Orion did not even acknowledge the man, his face grim. He was finally getting some answers, and as expected, he was not liking it.

"That book was what I have been searching for. All these years, all the hard work, it finally paid off when I found it. But it was too late." Antares Prima kept talking, and Orion listened. Hating his father was one thing, but finally learning the truth was another. He continued listening, and his father continued telling him the story, "The reason why I needed it, why I wanted it, was two-fold. One, it belonged to us. God Slaying Magic was our birthright. Two, because I had hoped that the regenerative abilities of God Slayers could heal me. And if you;re going to ask, no, my heart is still failing, as you well know."
It was a well-known fact by Orion that his father had a weak heart, a skip in its beat that was life-threatening. No amount of doctors could cure the man, and Orion attributed some of his father's vices to it. "There can only be one, Orion." The weight of the words crashed heavily on the man. His father was dying, and most likely, very soon. The book where he learned Lightning God Slayer Magic was his way of passing down the legacy of the Prima family. Antares was essentially saying goodbye.
The group decided to move at that point. The scouts sent ahead reported nothing of note. It seems the giant polar bears had thoroughly been exterminated with Orion's trick the last time he was here.
"Fucking asshole. Why the fuck now?!" Orion cursed, maintaining his position in the back, away from everyone else. He was processing the information his father had just dumped on him. But before he could go any further, a roar jolted everyone.
"Vulcans! At the entrance!" Everyone looked back and saw a horde of Vulcans rushing in. It seems they had been lured by the wyvarn carcass, and had been hunting their group. Orion, being the last one, was the first line of defense. He readied himself, hands drawn back and spell at the tip of his tongue.

"Run! Run!" The fight had taken long, and the Vulcans have not stopped pouring into the cave. It seems as though every single Vulcan had been called to this specific spot. Orion had been hard-pressed, but it was his father who had held the frontline for most of the time. The man was weaving in-and-out, lightning was coursing through the cave-mouth erratically. It was a sight to behold.
Orion grabbed the Ajedrez heir just in time before an explosion rocked the whole cave. Half of the group were dead, the rest wounded. The only fighting wizard left were Orion and Antares, and even then, his father seemed worn out. They were at their limits, but had something to show for it. The cave was littered with bodies of Vulcans by the hundred. They had done good work. It was just not enough.
"Dad!" Antares was struck behind, and he stumbled. The man stood right back up and blasted the one who got him with twice the power. He looked to Orion and shouted "Run! Take the kid and run!"
Orion could not help but shed a lone tear, before carrying the half-unconscious Ajedrez heir on his shoulder and sprinting deeper into the cave. A mighty rumble, and then silence. Orion knew what happened. It was the logical course of action, after all, sealing the cave mouth.
"Fuck!" He was shedding more tears now, thinking of his father trapped fighting against a horde of Vulcans. He moved to grab a scarf from his jacket's pocket, to tie up a cut on the Ajedrez heir's forehead, but instead felt paper.
Orion opened the piece of paper, and it read: "To my son,"

There were no words shared between client and wizard.
Orion had not uttered a word, and Michael Ajedrez was too shocked to even comprehend anything. They had both successfully gotten into the tower, only to find nothing. There was literally nothing inside. Only dust lived there. Only dust and ghosts of the past. The Ajedrez family left nothing to the potential thieves and robbers, it seemed. IT had all been a waste.
Afterwards, both client and wizard took the mountain-side stair down. It had been a long walk, only pausing at the cave entrance. It seems that Antares Prima took quite a bit of Vulcan before succumbing to the horde. He was lying face-down. Cold and dead. Orion took the time to burn the body, before moving on. It was the least he could do, specially after the letter.
Speaking off, it seems that his father had taken the time to explain everything to Orion within the enclosed letter. Everything, from his disappearance, right down to his mother's death, it was written down. There was no mistaking it, but rather, the question of belief came into mind. If he were to believe what was written, then it would change everything about his life. Everything, up until this point, was a lie. Everything he fought for. Everything he believed in. A lie.
The mission ended when Orion escorted the Ajedrez heir back to his estate. It had been a sombre mood. Payments made. No goodbyes said. It was better that way. In a way, both of them left becoming sadder and wiser.
