This stream. The early afternoon, the slivers of light dancing atop the water's surface slipped away as the occasional cloud curtained the light away for but fleeting, albeit sparse moments. It was this stream that he recently bumped his head against hard enough to fall unconscious. Luckily, he only drifted for a little ways before being washed up on the bank, belly up and relatively okay.
His memory of the event was foggy, but he did recall strange, fractured glimpses of an underwater city and a castle. He was certain that was part of the dream he had during his unconscious retreat.
"Well, I'll have t' watch out and not have something like that happen again!" He announced and he did so without a shred of context whatsoever. Taking off most cloth excluding a black fundoshi, he was crouched and posed at the river as if to suggest he was about to catch fish barehanded.

"Don't go stark naked, kitty cat." Orion grunted, his eyes closed. His fishing rod was planted in front of him, on the bank, unsupervised. A beer was found on his right hand. A cigarette on his left. Both were actively being consumed by the man. The cigarette inhaled less frequently compared to the almost-finished can of beer.
This whole time, Orion had his eyes closed, just enjoying the quiet afternoon. The man always enjoyed days like this. It was perfect. And the best part was that he had company, which never happened much at all these past couple of months. The world was suffering once again, but it could wait a day.
Fishing, after all, was more important.
"Don't you eat any of the fish I caught. I promised your brother I'd bring some back," Orion muttered under his breath, just soft enough for Topaz to hear. Fishing also meant silence, loud sounds scare fishes away after all. Looking at his companion, he asked, "Did you nod off again?"

"...How'd you know I was thinkin' about getting stark naked!?" It appeared that Topaz was genuinely surprised that the man succeeded in reading his mind. He thought about removing each article of clothing, but surmised that when in the company of others, it was rather rude. He did not think that perhaps, it was not desirable, but just bad manners. He assumed that was what Koji would have said.
"...How'd you know I was thinkin' about eating your fish!?" At this point, Topaz was beginning to get creeped out. Then it became a subtle awe. The feat was impressive.
"Alright, I'm goin' for it!" he called out after his activity was called into question. His tone had its usual spirited flavour and he lunged for something. He partially submerged, remained still for but a fleeting moment and pulled out... nothing. "It got away!" he complained.

Orion glanced at his fishing partner, "Because I saw you taking your clothes off." Without turning back, he continued, "I'm all about going stark naked, but I prefer my company to be of the opposite sex." The last thing he wanted was a naked cat strutting around him. He was a tolerant person, a patient person, but he really did not want to have to wash his eyes with soap.
"You're a cat. You eat fish." Orion answered dismissively, instead focusing on the few stray fishes still swimming within the proximity of his bait. They were just there, swimming around, not knowing that Orion will be cooking them later once they were caught. And they will be caught.
SPLASH!
Orion watched his guild mate hurl himself quite humorously into the river. It was an interesting sight: a cat bathed in water. "You alright?" the man having given up the pretense of fishing, since most had swam away after the ruckus Topaz had made, "Had too much to drink? Orion took a sip at his own, before putting it on the ground and reaching out to help Topaz out of the water.

He made so much sense. He was demystifying everything with his answers. Topaz wanted to believe he was psychic, but it looked like he just had common sense. This was why Topaz was pouting, which he started doing after Orion's first answer. Then he completely missed his mark and ended up accepting Orion's help out of the water.
"Noo..." he replied. "I didn't drink nothin' yet. I guess I should just use a fishing rod." Before he did any of that, he created a small field of heat that eclipsed just him. It was to dry him off before putting most of his clothes back on. He left the shirt off because it seemed like the thing to do. Fishing without a shirt, he felt, was the true way to fish.
OF course, most of them likely were scared off. Maybe they would return by the time Topaz was finished setting up. He plucked the rod from the ground adjacent to him, fixed a shiny lure and walked over to the river.
"Alright. For REEL this time!" He said in a hush, a whisper, since the whole point of the brief lull was to attract fish again. He cast the line and the lure sunk into the water with a 'plunk!'

Orion watched Topaz work his magic. It seemed very useful. Heat made everything easy when things get too wet, and for a cat, it was an even better magic to have. The cat-man finally sat down and fished regularly, to which Orion sent a prayer of thanks to the heavens for. He really did not want a repeat of Topaz falling into the water, scaring all of his potential victims away.
"None yet?" Orion raised an eyebrow, before grabbing a small can from his pack, and tossing it over to Topaz. He had packed enough for two. This meant he had packed enough for four people, one share for his companion, a three-person share for himself. "Drink it while it's cold."
The breeze was amazing, the sun was a-blazing, and the fishes were a-swimmin'. It was a purrfect day. Orion chuckled in his head after that thought.
"Topaz, ever wonder why cats dislike water?" Orion asked randomly, "actually, is that even true? Do cats really hate water that much?"

"None yet," he echoed. He supposed he just had to be patient. The whole fishing scene was about patience. It was patience embodied. Luckily, Orion came equipped. Topaz found a can, heavy and cold, tossed his way. He plucked it from the air easy enough, allowing one hand to hold onto the rod in the other's steed.
"Oh... thanks!" He made sure not to shout too loud. He was aware that Orion loved the stuff. Topaz rathered pretty much any other drink. Still, since Orion's arrival, he would drink whatever was thrown at him. After all, it was still cold. Cold beverages were almost always good save for tomato juice.
So, he took the advice and attempted to drink it before it became warm and piss-like. A belch followed before he answered the question posed to him. "Huh, I dunno. I just find the sudden cold splashin' all over me pretty shocking. Then you have to deal with yer fur being wet forever. It's like clothes you can't take off and dry! Except for me. I can dry them." He smiled impishly and then felt a tug on the rod. Topaz placed the can at his feet adjacent and took hold of the rod with both hands.
"Oh, finally!" he exclaimed as he watched the slashes at the end of his line.

"Yeah, you're welcome." Orion went back to his own drink, his eyes wandering off to the unknown. He was out of it that he found himself lying on the bank, watching the clouds pass by over them. It was a great day, too great.
The topic of cats and water got him a bit more attentive after Topaz replied. It seemed reasonable, the reason that it. Wet can be fun, especially when it is planned. Unplanned, it can be annoying. Couple that with the propensity of fur to be very uncomfortable when wet, then it's just a recipe for disaster. But, dogs seems to like getting themselves wet. Doesn't seem to mind it that much. So why just cats..." Orion trailed off, "But then, you don't have that much of a problem, fire mage and all that."
Before he knew it, Topaz's line seemed to have a hit. Orion sighed to himself, his own line not seeming to be attracting any potential dinner. "You know, I wish life could just be like this all the time." Orion just watched Topaz with his catch, ready to help if needed, "Peace." He continued, closing his eyes as he breathed in the pollen-filled gust of cool air.

"Hm! Yeah! But dogs are dumb, so, there y' go!" To Topaz, this response was not even refutable. The logic was ironclad. "But I could be wrong. Are we talkin' about those things that forget the tails attached to them?" It was a definite moment of history being made. Topaz was wielding sarcasm. It was likely the first time he had done it. One would wonder if he knew what satire was at all until that point.
And he wrestled with the fish. There was an appreciation for peace going on while he did. "Yeah, me too," he said between grunts and quickened speech as a result of his acute focus. "We often get interrupted by monsters when doing stuff like this, but not...TODAY!"
And Topaz pulled the fish straight out of the water. Time seemed to slacken as he gazed up at the airborne fish, still tethered tot he hook. It had a nice direction to it. It would not land back in the water. However, it did start to fall towards his partner's head.

"But...I love dogs..." Orion blurted out. True, he did love dogs. They were man's best friend, or so it was said. To Orion, dogs symbolized true and unadultered love and loyalty. It was something to be admired, in all honesty. The animal was the first by your side when you cry, and the last to leave you when you need company. He would not mind getting a dog one day.
"I like cats too!" the man forgot for a second who he was talking too, and had to backpedal. Cats were great. Yeah, they were definitely very independent, but they were affectionate as well. "Cats are great...cats are great..." He muttered, still thinking about getting a dog, "What do you think? A dog named Asta? Hm, maybe I should get a pet-"
His thoughts were interrupted when something landed on his head. It was wet, scaly, and flopping around. Orion just kept lying down on the ground, fish still breathing its last on his head of all places, "As much as I like fish, I like them cooked." He commented, "Please get this fish off my face," He was surprisingly calm about it, "And please don't take a bite! Your brother won't be too happy if we return with fish that has chunks bitten off of it." He was sure Topaz was not going to do it, but he had to make sure. That cat was a bit unpredictable.

"Oops!" The fish was drawn up off of his face with the utmost degree of care. A slow, gradual, steady increase in elevation until the face was free of fish. Topaz pulled it towards him while listening to Orion's request. It was difficult to tell if he really was thinking about eating the fish right then and there. He managed to simply place it into a crude, small crate Topaz brought with him there.
"Well, dogs are fine, I suppose," he compromised. "But that's a great name for a dog, yes! I agree!" The name rang true for Topaz and it did not appear he was against the idea of having a pet dog. Perhaps, rather, the topic had just left him by then. He was never one to dwell on much, if anything. A new thought entering his head pushed other matters to the side with great ease.
"Anything yet for you?" He caught one fish. He was uncertain if there was anything more than that one fish. "Come to think of it, how many are we trying to catch?"

Orion felt the fish leave his face slow. It slapped him. Three times. Finally, it was pried off, only to reveal a red-faced Orion trying his best not to make a sound. They were still fishing after all, and any loud sounds would cause the gathered fish to swim away scared. No matter how much he wanted to scream bloody hell, he reigned it in.
"Yes, definitely Asta. I might look into adopting," Orion hummed, wiping his face with his already dirties shirt. The fish stains will take quite a bit to deal with later on, but it'll be alright, since he still had some chemicals left from his last fishing trip. "Unless you know someone who has a cat needing adoption- and no, I won;t take you in no matter how much your brother wants me to." He chuckled softly, shaking his head at his own joke.
"Hm...I just wanted to get away, to be honest. The guild. The missions. The life-threatening dangers lurking outside the village. It gets too much..." Orion trailed off, his face now turned towards the horizon. He felt himself aging, the burden of having to keep going without his mother creeping back up from the depths of his alcohol-filled gut. "Does it ever go away?" the question was more for himself, yet he blurted it out anyways, asking the wind for an answer.

“You won't take me in? But I'm so small, you wouldn't even know I'm here!” Topaz had an alien sense of humour in the way that he did not have a specific, discernible tone for when he was joking or being serious. With his response, it sounded like your usual coaxing attempt, plump with a whiny plea tinging the treble-heavy words.
Topaz returned to fishing alongside his response, which were strangely chipper, but somewhat cold at the same time. “Well, mostly outside of the village, anyway!” He was, of course, speaking about the mythical beast threat that was not exactly a nuance or a rare encounter, but something that appeared to be in the final phase of ending what remained of the world.
“Definitely not! Not yet! It seems to be why a lot of guilds reformed!” Topaz pouted. Finally. “It seems like my brother's all about friends and family and whatnot and that's great!; but that's no reason to gather powerful magic users. Y' don't need to be a mage to be a friend.” He turned his eye to Orion and for once, not a shred of frivolousness stained his bestial visage.
“I'm gathering wizards like other guilds to make a final stand. We do well enough and the world's ours again.”

Orion glanced at the cat, "Small but terrible," he whispered to himself, before continuing louder, "you'll cause too much trouble for me, do you know how much you eat? I'd be broke until I turn ninety if I took you in," Orion chuckled, "your brother can keep you."
There were things Orion were scared of: octopus, ghosts, and pineapples. There were little that Orion found himself terrified of. Yet the world continually pushes the worst of the worst to its inhabitants. Orion has faced stuff that definitely should only exist in fairy tales. Why now? Why does the world throw its most horrible their way now.
"Wizards, strong and weak, young and old, we fight," Orion paused, then continued with a sigh, "we fight for ourselves first and foremost. I've seen it. Heard it. Wizards now look to protect themselves and those closest to their hearts. They fight for selfish reasons." He turned to Topaz, "Is that enough? Is that truly enough for the final stand?"
His pole started to wriggle, and without hesitation, Orion took it in one hand and started reeling in his catch.

“It's enough to scrape by and be kinda happy sorta.” It was a childly way to put it. Topaz did not see much wrong with placing the majority of one's concern in themselves and then those close to them. “That could be enough for some, but for me – not after Sylvia told us those stories of the past. These guilds don't sound like the ones she was talking about...”
Topaz's pole was still, the line even stiller. His luck was waning in regards to fish catching. It contrast, Orion seemed to have encountered something on the end of his line. Perhaps it was because Topaz's thoughts were elsewhere – but not only elsewhere, but unable to gather to form anything of note. Solutions, strategy, further elaboration – anything.
He closed his eyes. “Mm. All of that's too big for lil' ol' me, anyway. At least it is how I am now. That's how I feel.” Reopening them, a familiar smile was back in place. “Things are pretty good back at the guild. It's kinda greedy to want even more than that.”
