Another chuckle. His response was what one could expect, really. He did not much disappoint. It was a pretty lame little game she’d played there. Yet, it had also made both of them laugh. That constituted a win in her book.
Still though, she should probably clear that up. “It really is not all that special, if I am being honest.” Naturally, she would take the last sip from her beer before continuing, just to add another little pause to it. By now, that was probably fairly transparent as far as strategies went, but it was just her way of doing things. It was more fun to be that way.

Every setup needed a punchline, though. And she was far better at the former than giving anything interesting in the end. Nat liked to think that the disappointment from that would be endearing, rather than annoying. “I am a healer by trade. But my method of healing is kind of painful. Hence, I am not very successful at it outside of my own guild. Those guys don’t mind a little pain. The upside of working with machos, really.”

“Oh, yes, having a healer about? That is appreciated,” she started, tone slightly shifting. It was a lot less soothing, but also more casual. But that should be fine, she had a beer in now. One was allowed to be a bit more direct then. Though, she did not directly make her further desires known. Instead, she’d put down the empty mug and tapped against it. He had promised one or multiple, but he had also just shared his now about to be depleted bounty. Still a chance that he might buy her more. And free drinks were always better drinks.

In exchange – though she would deny ever even thinking of it as such – Nat continued. “But when you start healing them and there is the smoke and the pain and they scream because they did not expect it,,,,suddenly that appreciation is gone. People outside the guild tend to work with me exactly once. Others can do what I do without the hurt, so they are more in demand.” She’d shrug after, basically just speaking her mind at this point. It was slightly annoying, but it didn’t bother her too much, most of the time.

Her earlier assessment seemed to be validated. The man was certainly an optimist. His logic did make sense, of course. If one compared a situation with no healer and one with her as the healer, she would be preferable to many. But when she had to compete with others of her profession? Not so much.
It was probably best to just let this rest though, so she would give him another faint smile. He was giving her more beer. That was all that really mattered. “As for the pain? I guess that just comes naturally. I channel starlight to purify others of their ailments, or to cauterize and energize wounds. Someone much smarter than me once explained to me that it first burns out everything bad and then forces the body to regenerate. Or something, I really did not follow completely. In the end, if you are hurt I can lay my hand upon you and the wound will go away. It just will hurt quite a bit.”

She shrugged. Science was not her strong suit. That magic was something she understood more on an instinctual level than an empiric one. “It’s worth it to me, at least.”
