"I suppose," Orion tentatively answered. He knew quite a lot of the mages at Cait Shelter did everything for money, for the most part. Money bought food, clothes, and shelter. Money, basically, bought safety. But money can only take you so far. "I know a lot of wizards do things for money, and they seem to be content."
The green-eyed monster was not something Orion had to deal with, especially since most of his money was wasted on booze and cancer-sticks. Money meant nothing much to him except for the simple delights, which seemed to work just fine.
"I do this because..." Orion couldn't find the answer. It was there, yet he knew he would be lying if he said it. "because I want to prove something to myself," there, he lied. For the most part, it was a lie.
"I lied..." he blurted out, and sighed, "to be honest, I don't have a reason. I used to have one, but now...nothing..." He blames his father. His idiot, self-sacrificing, dead father.

he felt like he was betrayed when orion doesn't give him an answer that he deemed spicy. he slumps back to his chair as the last words of orion's statement finishes, both hands holding his coffee as he slowly sipped the last of it.
he lets the receptacle rest on the table. "that's not what i wanted to hear." blunt and straight to the point, perhaps he could have worded it better.
the evident frown turns neutral. he raises his head, sharp eyes going back to maintaining eye contact like what proper etiquette should be. the stare is held, though it's more akin to childish curiosity than one that is meant to intimidate. he raises a brow, as he asks the question.
"well, did you achieve it already or did you just abandon it? if you don't have any reason to be in the business anymore, why can't you just, i dunno, go be an inn owner or something instead? that sounds boring though, so i don't blame you for not doing that."
he'd babble a lot more, but he stops himself before he says any more unnecessary stuff.

Orion chuckled, face turning ten years older than it should have been. The recent few had taken a toll on the man. He had been a driven person, a purposeful one that kept his course always. Instead, he was reduced to a pondering man, unfocused and without purpose. It twisted at his core, but there was nothing to bee done. "Trust me, it's not what I wanted to hear too."
Retire. Now that was something. To just leave this all behind, never look back, and live a normal- as normal can be in times like these- life. Was it truly possible? "Wizards like us, do you really think that's possible?" It was a nice thought, "To just leave it all behind?"
Orion turned towards the man, "The world has thrown us into a whirlwind. With everything going on out there, do you think we can just ignore it and carry on?" It was the million dollar question. Will the world's horrors eventually catch up to them? Or will the wizards gathering in guilds be able to beat the worst the world can throw at them?
He took his coffee cup once more, taking a long sip. The hot liquid burnt his pallet, but it didn't matter. He wanted to feel something. Something, even pain, can rejuvenate one's senses, and Orion felt very dull at the moment. His edge was gone. Lost...somewhere...

emil's naivete comes to light with his response. he crosses his arms at his question and tilts his head to the side.
"why not?"
regular people who cannot use magic can live their lives even in a rundown village such as dacite as long as they can use their heads. emil wasn't one, however, so he cannot see himself scraping by in this world without doing mercenary work. orion, on the other hand, doesn't look like a guy as simpleminded as emil.
"it's not like i'm making a difference on my own anyways, so i don't worry about anything else besides me and my brother."
he was just the same as everyone else in this world: just barely scraping by to live. he cannot see himself being a big player in the story as a whole. besides, his statement was too vague for emil to fully understand and give an equally vague answer to. he just made do with what he could.
"just do what makes you happy, i guess. does guild work make you happy?"

"Because having no purpose..." Orion paused, trying to find the right phrase, "you feel empty. And it's not a good feeling." The man was curious, and if he was being honest, this was the first time he had ever admitted ti himself how he really felt like these past few weeks; after meeting and finally seeing his father die.
With the last of his coffee, Orion stood up. "We must all live our lives the best way that we can. The guild. Our missions. It's all just a passing, isn't it?"
He looked at the man, "Maybe one day we might see each other again. A mission. We're both mages after all. You from the Wolves, and I from the Cats." Orion smiled and held out his hand for a shake, "Yes, a mission one day."
