A Family Heirloom [Mission/Solo]
Sept 2, 2019 1:13:52 GMT
edited on Sept 2, 2019 1:24:46 GMT by Orion Prima
MISSION NAME: A Family Heirloom CLIENT: Ajedrez Family CHARACTERS: Orion Prima MISSION BRIEFING: The Ajedrez Family heir had ventured into the Stalagmite Wastes in search for some hidden treasure of some kind. However, as his party slowly made their way deeper into the area, they were attacked by Yetis and other creatures. The heir was able to escaped, but in his wake, he had left the Ajedrez Ceremonial Sword, which is considered priceless by the family. Find the sword, and return it safely to the Ajedrez family.
Orion did not usually take solo missions. In fact, he liked the company of people. It made missions more fun in his opinion. This is owing to the fact that with the reduced population after The Calamity, most of everywhere had been reclaimed by nature. Just like the Stalamite Wastes, the world felt barren.
"Now, where did those airheads trek towards again?" Orion sighed to himself, his scowl deepening as he read the mission parameters once again. The Ajedrez heir was a buffoon of a man to try and bring an expedition into this place. Hell, they didn't even have a single high-tier mage with them!
"North it is, Orion rolled up the paper and placed it in his pocket. The cold had started to batter onto him, so he made sure to bundle himself up accordingly. "This is going to suck.

There was one thing Orion knew, and it was that he did not want to fight anything here. It wasn't that he was afraid, but more so the fact that if he didn't need to cause himself trouble, why would he? The Yetis were fine, some of the dragonic being were also pretty chill, as long as they don't see Orion. It was easy...for the most part.
Most of the creatures in the area were large, and were easy to see from afar. The wyverns are easily heard, with their roars echoing aloud. There was nothing Orion had to fear, except for his own stupidity.
With a huff, Orion continued on his trek. The snow was starting to fall, and he needed to find a cave of some sort for shelter. A screech. "Fuck," Orion cursed, before laying himself flat onto the ground, making himself blend into the still-rocky environment with his dark garbs. He was not going to be wyvern chum today.

It took a few moments, hours it felt like, but quite literally only a few minutes until the wyvern passed by overhead. Orion could feel his heart racing as the wyvern made its last screech over the horizon. A mage's life was quite dangerous, always living on the edge. Orion felt a pang in his chest as he thought about his mother, and her life as a mage supporting just the two of them. It must've been like this. Filled with fear, of the dangers that lurked around every corner, of a life that's fleeting.
Shaking his head, Orion pushed himself up from his position. He needed to keep going. The journey was quite far, since the Ajedrez heir was actually able to beat back some of the attacks by the Yetis. Their group had pushed on for quite awhile, before being overwhelmed. The heir, apparently, had left his group to die as he escaped by himself. Orion couldn't help but feel disgusted. But money was money, and he wasn't one to turn down a job that will pay for his meals.

The snow never stopped. Orion had hoped that some reprieve will be given for him, but the heavens did not seem to smile upon him today. He was used to the tree-filled forest areas of Rhyolite, where birds chirped and sang. In Stalagmite Wastes, there was only the screeches of the wyverns, and the constant dread of monsters attacking. The beasts were quite vicious, but certainly avoidable.
"You have got to be kidding me." Orion looked up, and saw a mountain. It had been a wasteland until this point, with small hills that made it a bit more difficult. But this mountain, was something else. he could see something on top of it though, something that looked like a tower. A remnant of a civilization before the Calamity. If that were the case, then Orion assumed that the Ajedrez heir went that way.
"Think of the money.." Orion muttered to himself as he slowly made his way to the base of the mountain, hoping to find a path of some sort.

Orion blanched at the thought of having to climb the mountain by hand. He had almost turned his tail and walked back, abandoning the mission, if that were the only way to get up the mountain. Hands and feet, free-climbing they call it, just dangling in mid-air, probably the most stupid thing one can do in their lives. Orion was a lazy man, a care-free man, but not a stupid man.
"Should've known that spoiled brat would not have climbed this mountain with his bare hands," Orion shrugged, finding a small stairway carved onto the mountain side. It was small, barely fitting two men abreast, and crumbling. He looked at it for a moment, scrutinizing its foundations, before sighing. He was getting paid for this. He might as well try it out. "Here goes nothing," with that, took his first tentative steps up the mountain side towards his quarry.

The walk up was...interesting to say the least. Orion was sure he was at least half-way now, yet, he just couldn't be sure. The snow was quickly adding up, and the density of the seemingly brewing storm was making visibility quite awful. If this did not deter the young Ajedrez heir from turning back, then maybe Orion might have judged him too harshly. This snowstorm would have made Orion turn back. He'd rather be in a soft bed, within a warm room, in his own place. Not here, in the middle of a snow storm, trying to find an heirloom for family that was clinging onto the past too much.
A screech, followed by three more, alerted Orion of oncoming wyverns. With a practiced ease, he covered himself under his cloak, and pressed his whole body on the mountain-face. He glanced to the side, and could see the shape of wyverns battling the storm as they flew westward. Their nest must be somewhere there, and Orion was glad he wasn't heading in that direction. Just as he was about to continue his trek, a spark of danger in the corner of his eyes alerted him of another wyvern trailing the three. He paused, his body not moving an inch, hoping that the fourth wyvern did not notice him. One. Two. Three. Four. And it was gone; westward.
"Fucking wyverns." With that, he continued his trek upwards.

A Family Heirloom [Mission/Solo]

The blizzard got worse and worse, making visibility almost nonexistent. Orion had almost tripped more than thirty times at this point, his life hanging in the balance of his...balance. The narrow stairway carved into the mountain was both unstable and slippery, which made everything so much more dangerous as the weather turned from bad to worse. Every step was only visible one after another, and Orion had to make sure he was using the mountain side as a guide for sharp turns.
"Never a-a-again," Orion cursed, shivering from the small build-up of snow within and around the hood of his winter coat. He nose felt like it was going to fall off, and his ears did not feel any better. The chattering of his teeth was unstoppable at this point, and Orion was ready to just give up. But he had come too far, "I've got to be almost up there."
"Wait," Orion stopped, reaching out to the mountain side, which was surprisingly hollow. He looked towards the once-rocky face, which was now just a huge opening. With a smile, Orion walked into the safe haven, a cave to wait out the storm. "Now, how's about we make a fire!" Orion grinned to himself, shaking off the snow build-up on himself.

To be honest, Orion was not sure why he thought he could make fire in this cold weather. There were three factors preventing him to do so. One, there was nothing to set aflame. It was all rock, stone, and everything in between inside the cave. There was no wood at all, and the cloth Orion had was not going to be burned. Best save any cloth for the cold, after all. Second, it was cold. Too cold. And gusty. The horrid conditions prevented him from making a fire, even if he had some sort of fuel. He was afraid to go further into the cave, at least, until he had too. He was tired, and was not really ready to face whatever lurked within. Third, and final reason: he did not want to attract any creatures to the smoke and flame. If he even had both fuel and good weather, it was still a stupid thing to set-up a fire, especially since Orion was not capable of taking down groups of monsters...at this point in time. He was a new mage, a lower ranking one, but he wasn't a stupid one.
"Should've brought booze." Orion cursed himself, as he chewed on the rock-hard loaf that he had packed himself. It was good ration, and the bread helped keep him full, especially since it was a heavy one. As he took another bite, he observed the cave he had taken shelter in. It was man-made. The walls were almost too-evenly cut into a half-circle. probably some sort of earth magic was used. The structure up the mountain seemed old, and this tunnel might have been a part of the it. Before he could continue his observation, however, he spotted a white-ish gleam just across from where he had plopped himself. He took a moment to realize that it was a bone. And from what it looked like, a femur.
"Fuck me."

"I guess I found where the idiot led his cronies to die," Orion muttered to himself, glancing at the femur once again, before going back to his rock-hard bread. The cave must've also provided a safe-haven for the aforementioned group, most likely hoping to let a snowstorm pass as well. It seems that the cave lured those who were greedy enough to try and ascend the steps into a secure hideaway from the snow storm, only for disaster to strike. Whether it's be monsters, or the cold itself, the cave seemed to function as a natural tomb for the green-eyed. Orion was neither green-eyed, not an idiot. For the most part. The sooner he found the heirloom sword, the better. Most likely, the sword was inside this cave. Somewhere in its bowels, lies Orion's prize for this quest, and he wasn't going to let anything stop him.
There was a lull, a sort of impending-doom type feeling, as Orion took the last bit of bread into his gut. The winds were still blowing, and snow was building up right by the entrance. It wasn't getting dangerously high, so Orion merely shrugged it off.
He stood up, and dusted himself of the crumbs. The femur was still there, just taunting Orion to make a move. Without a glance, he moved past it, going further into the cave. There was little light to spare, so he had to use the cave walls to maneuver himself. Crack. Orion looked down on what he had crushed, only to reveal more bones. "Yup, this was their graveyard alright." The remains weren't even far from the entrance, which Orion thought was strange. He had thought that maybe the group had gotten farther in, but something stopped them. Whatever it was, Orion was sure not willing to find out.

A Family Heirloom [Mission/Solo]

"This place reeks," Orion cursed to himself as he shifted the bodies around. The skeletons littered around were mostly bones, with some flesh still attached to a few limbs here and there. The decay couldn't have been this fast, and the bones which were deprived of flesh were too clean. No, the thing that attacked this group had most definitely feasted. It wasn't uncommon at all, since the creatures who attack mages were mostly carnivorous. Orion wasn't sure what kind of creature, or creatures, had attacked this bunch. The heir of the Ajedrez family did not really have the capacity to talk about it, having faced too much trauma, as his doctor had said. Vulcans were not the likely culprit. Wyverns hated enclosed spaces like these. It must have been something else.
The sword had to be here somewhere, and Orion could not help but grimace every single time he sees a sword that's not what he was looking for. A ceremonial sword, they had explained it to be. Golden hilt, and ruby-encrusted, it would be quite the prize for anyone that comes upon it. It is also something that pops out, and yet, Orion couldn't find it.
"It has to be here," he could feel the chill once again invading. A cold draft swept through the cave, and for the first time in awhile, Orion felt dread crawl up his spine. Something was approaching from inside the cave. Something far more sinister than Vulcans or wyverns.

Orion was in a pickle. He wasn't sure what kind of creature had lurked into the scene, but he was sure it was not a friendly one. Immediately, he had sprung into action. Grabbing three corpses, he threw them over himself as he lied face-up. The stench was unimaginably horrifying, but he loved his life more than a few stench-filled moments. he had hoped that the corpses would hide his own smell. Orion was not sure if the creature itself utilized its sense of smell, but he was sure that if it had great eyesight, he won't be seen under three corpses piled on him at different angles.
He couldn't see much, but could hear squelching noises coming from his right. It was feeding, eating the remains of those who still had some flesh on it. In total, there were at least twenty people in this cave, all corpses of course, except for him. He wasn't planning on joining the soiree, so he had to stay still, and keep his breath intervals to maximum, maintaining the even and shallow breaths. He wasn't sure how long he was laying there, eyes searching for any sign of movement. He saw none.
What felt like days, could have been hours, but only a few minutes, the squelching sound stopped. Orion felt the creature shift, sniffing the air. There was a tense moment where Orion thought he might need to make a run for it. Three. Two. One. The creature shuffled, before heading back into the cave. The sound of it dragging a body echoed, and Orion had to fight a quiet woop! down. He was safe, for now.

"It's not fucking here!" Orion cursed to himself, having searched almost every single body that littered the floor of the cave. This was the spot, since each corpse had on a specific uniform that held them as an Ajedrez family employee. But the sword wasn't here. It was neither under the corpses, and Orion made sure to lift every single one, even though it almost made him when the corpses still had some flesh in them. Nor was it tossed to the side, as the Ajedrez heir seemed to believe. Orion searched, and searched, and searched. There was only one possible answer now.
Orion looked towards where the creature had dragged a body into. It was dark, darker now than it was when he had first entered the cave. With a flick of his finger, a small electrical current began encircling his thumb, acting as some sort of light. He couldn't see anything without it now.
"Fuck me." Orion, resigned, went further into the cave. The sword must be inside, having been dragged accidentally by the creature when it was looking for a corpse to feed. The problem was, Orion was sure he was no match for it in a fight. He steeled his nerves, and continued on, hoping to find the sword before the beasts finds him.

His steps were light, yet every pitter patter seemed to echo loudly within the cave. Orion was sure that with each step he took, he was getting closer and closer into hell itself. The suspense was there, and his heart seemed to have increased its beating by three times at this point. Yet, he shouldered on. The thought of turning back echoed in his head with every step. He succeeded in pushing it all aside, for now. As he got farther in, he noticed that the walls were dry, and the air started to heat up. The snowy drafts did not reach this far. Orion was almost tempted to start shedding his layers, the reprieve on the weight would have been worth it.
There was a deep growl which made Orion stop in his tracks. It was just in front of him, far enough that he was till somewhat hidden, but near enough that he could hear the creature chewing on flesh and bones. It was a sound Orion would never forget. Crunch! The bone seemed to have cracked under the pressure of the beast devouring it. Whatever the thing was , it was strong, strong enough to break bones quite easily. The chewing sounds did not make things better.
Extinguishing the small electric current on his thumb, he placed himself flat on the cave walls, and shifted forward slowly. He wanted to get a glimpse of the creature. He needed to see what kind of monster was strong enough to beat a small group of humans armed quite heavily. But at the same time, he did not want to be seen, or caught. An internal struggle later, Orion stopped his movement in favour of crouching down. He would wait until the beast was asleep, and then he would make his move.

It had taken a long time. A very long time. Orion had almost fallen asleep as well, his head bobbing up and down. He was able to stay awake, however, and had his ears pricked up for any sign of trouble. With a long delay, Orion finally heard the creature stop moving. There was no sound, neither the howl of the snowstorm, nor the beast, made any noise. The sound of silence, they called it. Orion hated it. Even then, he waited for a couple more moments, before making a move.
Small and steady. He didn't want to accidentally wake the creature up. Orion wasn't the most careful man, but he knew well enough that he could not do anything stupid. One wrong move, and he was most likely monster chow. A step here, and a small shift there, Orion made his move to get closer. He couldn't see anything, but as he approached, he could feel the creature's laboured breathing. The smell was more horrid than that of the pile of corpses near the entrance, and Orion almost gagged.
He couldn't see anything. Internally struggling for a moment, Orion finally decided to chance it. A small flick later, making as little of a sound as possible, he lit up his thumb once again with a small electric current. It was minute, and he hoped the creature did not wake up from it. With that, he finally saw the creature, and scowled. It was a fucking polar bear, and there were more than five of them. Looking closely, it seems that the one Orion encountered was the leader of the group. With that, Orion made his move.

There it was. The glint of gold caught his eye. Luck was on his side, since it was in the middle of two giant polar bears. He really wanted to be polar bear chow tonight, yes. With an internal sigh, Orion made his way around the first polar bear. The biggest one was curled up in front of the most recently devoured human body, while the rest slept behind it. It seems that the leader of the pack dictated which one of its celebration members would get next dibs on the meat. This also means that the leader of the celebration, big bad giant polar bear, had to be the first one in a fight, with the way they had themselves positioned. The strongest got to fight the most, but also got the first pick. It was the law of the jungle here, it seemed.
Light footsteps. Very light footsteps. It took three tries, but Orion was able to maneuver in between the first three polar bears. They had enough space in-between them to tiptoe in, and Orion took advantage of it. The sword was just right there, as obscene as he had thought it was going to look. Three steps more, and he would be within reach. Two steps. One step.
Grrrr...
Orion stopped mid-step, hoping to god that it was a yawn, and not one of the bears waking up from their slumber.
