MISSION NAME: the land of mist and snow CLIENT: a librarian, unnamed CHARACTERS: Orion Prima MISSION BRIEFING: a mysterious has requested a mage to look into an ancient shrine that was rumoured to be in the far corner of alakitasia. inside is supposedly a tome that recounts the lives of beings known only to the world as gods. most likely full of traps, the mage has to be agile, and quick-witted. failure can result in death.
Orion was the wrong person for this job. Funnily enough, he was also the right person for this job. The mission briefing stated that the mage be someone agile and quick-witted. Orion was neither of those. He was bulky, and very slow for the most part save for in battle. When it comes to puzzles and the like, Orion was not your man. In fact, he was the last person you would be taking. This was a dangerous mission indeed.
"The Land of Mist and Snow. I wonder why they call it that?" Orion grumbled as he made his trek towards the supposed shrine. The Land of Mist and Snow was a place where no villages could ever exist. No monster truly inhabited the place because of its desolation. No plant life could ever survive the harsh conditions. It was a sad place. A horribly depressing place.
Orion looked up. It was a flat expanse now, covered in all snow, while a strong blizzard blew westward. It was a dangerous place for even the most seasoned mages, and Orion was already feeling the stress. There was no shelter in sight, and his rations will be stretched thin if he did not find the place sooner rather than later. He would not fail though, the word was not in his vocabulary.

Orion was not sure of what he was supposed to be looking for. Apparently, the librarian had been adamant about a temple in the Land of Mist and Snow. The problem with locating such a temple was the fact that there was no map in existence of this area. There was also the fact that most people who explored this place end up not coming back. Those who do come back become mad. There was something to be said about this expanse of land, very resilient to human expansion, and very much still under the control of Mother Nature.
"Oppressive..." Orion grumbled, the snowstorm still battered the land. There was escape, no landscape in sight, and nothing available in the surrounding area for Orion to make a make-shift shelter. All he had was his own two feet, and movement created body heat. So he kept moving forward with no complaints.
Then, he heard a roar. It was a beast. It was somewhere in front of him. The problem was that the beast seemed to be crying out in pain. "Fuckin' weather...killing everything..." Orion cursed, his teeth chattering as he made his way towards the pained animal. He would help it as best he could. It was only decent, after all.

the land of mist and snow [solo mission]

Orion first thought it was some sort of giant polar bear. As he got closer, he imagined it to be a mammoth of some sort. Finally in front of the dying creature, he could see if was a wyvern. A wyvern that was supposed to be very accustomed to the cold. This wyvern, however, seemed almost frozen to death. Orion looked around for any signed of an ice mage, but to no avail. There was nobody around, and Orion could only fathom as to why this wyvern whose primary environment is a wintery place like this, was freezing to death. He had no clue, and from what he could see, the creature was in pain.
"Let me ease you." Orion placed a hand over its scaly head. It had shrunk from the touch, but Orion still petted the creature. It was of noble decent, wyverns were generally seen as the cousins of dragons. It did not deserve to die slowly, and very painfully.
With a surge of lightning, Orion sent a shockwave directly into the wyvern's central nervous system, overloading and shutting it down in an instant. There need't be pain if it was unwarranted. He let the creature fall from his arm, and onto the snow. There was no time for burying. The elements will take care of the creature, embracing it one last time.

The man had been walking for a very long time. The snow battered him every step of the way, but Orion persevered. He had seen something earlier. Something in the distance that glinted at him. It was an orb of some kind, maybe from a spire of a tower, because he sure as hell would not believe that it was a flying orb. No, it had to be something hanging from a tower of some kind. Maybe a bell.
He huddled into his cloak, further trying to hide himself from the elements. It had been a grueling time, unable to stop and rest for than a few moments due to the fact that there was no natural shelter in sight. It was just a vast expanse of land. No outcrop of some kind in sight.
"Fuck this..." Orion cursed, his teeth now chattering endlessly. It would not do him well to freeze to death in a place like this. He had too much to live for. He had the guild, he had his friends, and he still had his promise to keep. No, he can't die here. Not when his mother's killer was still on the loose, and his father's task still weighing on him. He will not die.
He kept going, the cold nipping at his heels.

There it was again. The glow was there, just above the horizon. The blizzard had been a nice veil, but it could not stop this light from passing through each and every snowflake. It glowed bright, invitingly, and very enticing. Orion almost stopped walking and just stared into its magnificence. But it was a trick. Orion snapped himself out of the trance, and glared at the light. It winked at him, and then vanished into thin air, like it was never there. The narrative would stay the same, Orion will always deny seeing it. Or else, he might be labelled crazy for seeing lights in the sky. No, he will keep it to himself.
It did one thing for him though, it kept him going. And now, as he stared into this vast hole on the ground, he had to stop and think about what he would do next. The light guided him here, but now he had to do this on his own.
The hole itself looked man-made. It had pillars around it, and then the hole looked to be a temple of some sort, though Orion could only get a small glimpse of the bottom. An altar was situated to the right, and all-around were spires. The way down was a small staircase carved to the wall. It wasn't deep, but it was ominous.
He descended.

Orion took each step with care. Snow seemed to have built up in the stair itself, but surprisingly, as he descended deeper into the hole on the ground, the air became warmer. It wasn't as warm as a summer breeze, but it was definitely warmer down her than up in the snowstorm. That would be impossible, since warm air rises and cool air sinks. That was something even Orion knew. The man was not a genius, but that was basic science. So, the mere fact that hot air seems to have sunk here was an unnatural phenomena.
He slowly got to the temple proper, and had to whistle at the artistry involved in creating this place. Everything seemed to be very precise. The carvings, the pillars, the spires, and even the temple that was situated in the middle of the whole cavern. It sat there, a whited sepulcher, just sitting in peace. Down here, the heat was beginning to make Orion sweat so much that he had to shrug off his own coat.
The god slayer approached the whited sepulcher. It called to him, like nothing had ever before. It whispered to come closer, and Orion had no power over himself now. He walked closer. Each step making his heart beat faster than ever.
This was wrong.

Orion felt warm. Too warm. It had been warm earlier, but this time, the warmth seemed to envelop his whole soul. The source of the warmth? The whitened sepulcher. It radiated heat like nothing Orion had ever experienced. He was sure that the sun was colder than this thing in front of him. He tried to move away, but only felt himself getting closer and closer. There was no stopping the power. Orion felt compelled, and his body obeyed while his mind resisted.
He had no control.
He made it to the sepulcher. It was white. Shimmering, and very pristine. Nobody had touched it in a millennia. The problem was, Orion didn't know where that information come from? A millennia? How did he even know that? Orion's hand reached closer and closer towards the sepulcher. his hand almost touching the surface. It was tempting. It was there. It had a hold on Orion that made him do whatever it willed. The problem was, Orion was fighting. He was fighting very hard to control himself. He strained. His hand was sweaty, his face was drenched, and his arms were shaking. He needed to regain control. He knew whatever was compelling him. Whatever it was that was that laid inside the sepulcher. It was evil. It was an abomination.

the land of mist and snow [solo mission]

He stopped. Orion felt his arms being held back by an opposing force. The man felt the strain leave, his fight was taken away from him by another entity. His hands, once trembling, were now free for him to move. He stumbled back, almost falling onto his own buttocks. Orion breathed a sigh of relief. He knew, for some reason, that if he had somehow opened the sepulcher, he would have unleashed a horror unimaginable. The world would have experienced a second calamity, one that it was not prepared for.
The god slayer looked up into the sky. He noticed the snow never fell on this place. The ground had no traces of snow whatsoever, nor did it have any signs that it had seen snow. It was dry, very dry. The snowfall seemed to stop midway into the cavern, and the light shone through it reflected the snowflakes, seemingly disappearing.
Without another word, Orion looked back towards the sepulcher. It was unmoving, but then a voice rang out, instantly shaking the whole cavern. It was dark, horrifying, yet Orion was compelled to listen.
"You. Why have you come here? Is it time? Is it my time to finally break free? Who are you?"

Orion couldn't move once more. The voice immobilizing him as it thundered all around the cavern. Fear gripped his soul, and he couldn't even scream in the anguish. It spoke with a grave voice, as though it knew something Orion didn't. It spoke in a melodious voice, as though it was a serene being. It spoke with authority, one that Orion could not help but admire. The god slayer could only stand in silence as it addressed him.
"You. You who come here. Do you believe yourself to be powerful enough? Do you believe you can carry the fate of the world on your shoulder as you release me? Do you even know who I am?"
The voice thundered, and Orion stared on without any reaction. He couldn't react. His whole body was rigid, neither in fright, nor in reverence. He had no control of himself.
"Do you then presume that you're stronger? That just because you are a god slayer, that you can slay me? No. You are too young. Too weak. Too foolish. Too caught up in the world. Let me tell you. The world is but the surface of life itself. There is more. More than you can ever imagine."
Orion listened. He couldn't not listen. He was here. He was an unwilling participant.
"Then shall I show you how much you overestimate yourself? Shall I show you how your powers are feeble? How you, a god slayer, can never slay a true god. A god like me."
Then whiteness.

If there was such a thing as absolute fear, then it was here. Orion saw things he should not have seen. Power was coursed through his vein. Orion tasted the being's power, and it was too overwhelming. His own god slayer magic was reacting very antagonistic towards the foreign entity. It was definitely a god, a deity of some kind, but it was more powerful. This being was definitely a god that Orion could not slay. It's power was just too much. Too much.
Then Orion was flung to the floor. No. He was released the deity's grasps, and he fell without the support. Finally, he could feel his knees buckling, his whole body shaking, and his mind twisted. Nothing should have a power so strong, as strong as the being that he encountered. No, it was impossible. Even with his god slayer magic, a magic supposedly existed to slay deities, he could not contend with that amount of raw unadultered power.
Orion felt fear. Absolute fear.
Then he would get up, and slowly made his way back towards the top of the cavern. As he reached the last step, he looked back, and the cavern was gone. It was replaced by nothing, just a flat land mass filled with snow.
He walked back, finished with the mission. He found nothing, and he would tell the librarian that there was nothing, only rumours lived in the Land of Mist and Snow. He wouldn't tell a soul of what happened. They would think him crazy. No, he would keep it to himself. It's best that way. Better than having to face that power once again.
