“What's this..?” These words of Lucius's had nothing to do with the task at hand. While he stood there, he absent-mindedly fished about the innards of his pockets. What he plucked from its confines was a ring of the band variety. It was golden with no eye-catching markings or strange features. After Lucius finished looking it over, he began putting it on. He got no further than just the tip of a paw. They were hardly shaped for it; however, upon having it hover there as he allowed a moment of disappointment to pass, it grew, moved all the way down his right hand's ring finger and shrunk until it fit him.
He jumped a bit, startled slightly by the whole ordeal – but it was then did he remember he was supposed to be doing a task – a job. It was just a shame the item had such a firm grasp of his attention already.
“Oh, that's right...” he muttered to himself, obviously having entered an enlightening period of recollection. “Well... I'll know what it does after I attune to it. Anyway!” He tossed his arms into the air in celebration of being back on track.
“You're ready? This job sounds pretty depressing...”

Mynte stroked the blade of her Scimitar with reverent awe. She was new to the art of sword fighting (on land anyways), but Orion had been nice enough to give her pointers. Still, she figured that she would require real world practice outside of the comfort and relative safety of the Cait Shelter yard which doubled as their training grounds. [break][break] Against Orion's advice, she had decided to take up a mission. After all, she wanted to make her stay in Cait Shelter worthwhile rather than remaining as a freeloader. She wanted to pay back the guild, who had been so nice to grant her refuge, in some way. [break][break] Mynte had followed after Topaz as the latter embarked on a perilous-sounding mission. Although the exceed had not refused her presence, the mermaid was rather shy and nervous around the feline. The creature alluded an enigmatic aura that she found difficult to understand. Especially when he started talking to himself. [break][break] "Uh. Who? Me?" Mynte's eyes widened as the exceed turned his attention onto her. "Not particularly… but I have to try." She did not want to lie to feline. After all, it was unknown to her what sort of magical abilities cats possessed. Lie detection could've been one of them for all she knew. And the last thing she wanted was to get on Topaz's bad side. [break][break] Notorious B.I.G.

A faint air of anxiety.
Lucius was acutely aware as uncertainty emerged through words forged ostensibly through sheer diffidence. Upon both catching ear and sight of it, his eyelids lowered slightly beneath the weight of his own scrutiny and a knowing smirk surfaced.
“Yeah, you.” He was hardly poking fun - perhaps slightly, but more so rinsed through with an impossible-to-suppress amusement. There was no point in making snide comments concerning the lacking presence of another he could be speaking to. Lucius was perceptive enough to read between the lines, but he found difficulty in accepting somebody being anxious around a stature-challenged creature such as himself.
‘I guess I’m not exactly a familiar face to this girl, eh,’ he thought to himself. His appearance changed and he even adopted another name entirely. Certainly, he also behaved nothing like his other self, seemingly deceased.
“That’s alright. Let’s just play it smart if anything pops up, okay?”

The Hanging Tree [mission, ft. Mynte]

"Okay." Mynte repeated in confirmation. She supposed that it was fortunate that she was at least aligned with this mysterious feline. Of course, she would have rather avoided being in such situations altogether, but here she was and there was no turning back.
"So…" She began, her voice failing her halfway. Clearing her throat and frowning, the Water Slayer's grip on her Scimitar tightened as she tried to compose herself. "I suppose it would be a good idea to have a look at this tree first?" The inflection of her suggestion made it seem more like a question. "I know the town had already tried to burn and cut it down… but maybe we could have a shot at removing it."
Mynte cast her gaze around the breeze-block structures of Dacite Village. "Unless we should speak to the locals first?" It was painfully obvious that Mynte was doing her best to avoid overstepping her boundaries.

He nodded in assurance with her confirmation and began to venture towards the town with the intention of entering it via its most commonly used path. Not long from there did the beginnings of a new conversation bud.
“Huh?” he questioned despite nothing having been said yet outside of the following question’s introductory utterance. “That’s exactly where I was headed. To that tree,” Lucius started as his eye darted about his surroundings. “But I think we’re gonna have to speak to them anyway.”
Already were figures peering at them from windows, around partially-opened doors. One braver woman perhaps in her early forties moved from the relative safety of her makeshift home and approached the two.
“Are you two travels?” No introduction, but just a somewhat hastily-spat question with slight overtones of anxiety staining the query.

The exceed at least did not ignore her suggestions entirely, although Mynte was made to feel foolish as she felt as though her suggestion was redundant after all. Ignoring the snide whispers of inadequacy that plagued her self-esteem, the woman followed after Lucius as he led them to the tree.
At the approach and direct question from a local, Mynte nearly jumped out of her skin. Suddenly fearful, and staring at the middle-aged woman as though they were nothing more than another hanging corpse, the Water Slayer looked towards Lucius for comfort.
"Um…"

The tree stood there at the edge of the village, proud and tall. It was surprisingly large, with an abundance of bare branches with nooses tied around them. They swayed in the gentle breeze, alongside a few bodies that were still hanging there. The people were too afraid to even take them down now, in case it would mark them as the next victim. In the distance, a ways off from the tree itself, was a woman dressed in white rags. Her face was covered by a veil, and her clothes were muddy. What was most odd was the fact she was hovering off the ground, her feet slightly translucent compared to the rest of her body. She was watching the group, unmoving between the forest's border. The nooses would sway even more, just looking at them would almost entice them to climb up and join the dead bodies. Something was definitely at play here, and this was their first warning...

“Sorta, yeah, I suppose so...” Topaz trailed off. In that short span of time, the woman's attention already strayed. Her gaze fell towards the bombastic tree, nigh dripping with liquidized fright. A supernatural tinge that perversely prodded through Topaz's and Mynte's body, it seized the woman who had come to greet them and the words she spouted ceased their flow entirely.
“Um – hello?” Topaz questioned. By then, fear twisted her face enough to draw Topaz's eye towards where her attention foolishly loitered. It was the tree and the hypnotic swing of the many pieces of rope hanging there. He looked back to see her looking in a different spot. It did not take long for her to flee without another word towards the pair. Topaz extended a hand in vain. The arm fell slack and he withdrew it.
“Not... the greatest sign,” he admitted as he turned towards the tree.
“We're here for a job. So, gotta see it through. Let's see what we can do, alright?” Topaz cast a look back towards his partner and then started to move towards the tree. His eyes searched about, threatening to catch sight of its apparent guardian the closer he drew to it.
