A mummified purplehead could be seen laying on the bed, staring at the ceiling. She had been informed that she was in intensive care unit at least until her body recover fully. With a certain sky dragon slayer healing magic, the process would have been a lot more faster perhaps. In some ways, she would be happy to see her again...though in other ways, she felt dread.
Her muscles was completely torn, every part of her orifice was bleeding, her brain cell was damaged, her bone had shattered, her blood vessels had burst and that's just some of the things that was listed by the doctor. The fact that she had manage to survive despite all that was a miracle of life itself...or perhaps more accurately a miracle of magic. It had what kept her together despite the heavy stress she had put herself under.
And even then it was not enough. She was supposed to save a trapped girl from a horde of undeads one which was behind barricade even. Yet it turned into the battle of her life one where she could see the underworld gate of hell should she close her eyes. Even now her body tingles all over as she could feel the reaper's scythe just a hair breadth from taking her neck should the guild mistress not save her hide.
The thought that an accomplished mage like her brought to her heel by a waddling corpse irritated to no end, as she covered her own eyes with her forearm while grinding her teeth together.

At the end of the day, Berry knew that the incident made little sense. Hearing from the Godfather’s report, she knew about the exact happenings that day. Why a grouping of limping corpses managed to retain defensive capabilities surpassing those of many trained defensive mages, Berry did not know. In fact, they did not appear to be a congregation of special infected. There was just a lot of them—and supposedly each one of them were capable of no selling trauma to their deceased, crumbling bodies or outright avoiding it with the agility of a Shaolin Monk.
But it didn’t excuse what Kasumi did, either.
”Get the fuck out of my way! Why are you even here?” Shoving the doctor aside while proceeding through the hall, Berry made her way into the room. Setting her golden hues on the mummified woman before her, she felt her heart sink in her chest. Eyes widening in horror, she used a gloved hand to grab a chair and tear it over towards the bed. The woman took a seat, and raised her hands over Kasumi’s body.
Blasting her body with as much healing arts as she could in one sitting, she enveloped Kasumi’s body in a soft light. It assuaged a great deal of damage from its sheer potency. Mending bones, muscle, flesh, brain tissue, she emptied almost half of her entire Magic supply to obsessively removed any and all damage that blighted her. Overall, it took about twenty-four seconds of constant channeling. Wiping perspiration from her brow, she let out relieved sigh.
And then her expression changed. Her face twisted and expressed rage of the highest degree. Even her eyes turned red, and her pupils became slits courtesy of her vampiric lineage. Voice raw with all of the anguish, ire, and despair of a widow in mourning, she screamed on the top of her lungs.

Hearing the ruckus from outside of the room confirmed the source of the dread. Sure her body hurts but she didn't actually want Berry to see her like this. Even worst was the fact that her injuries were mostly self-inflicted ones. It didn't take a genius to figure out what happened out there and Berry was a trained professional.
Her forearm lifted over eyes and for a second, their eyes met allowing her to see the horrified look on her partner's face. She wanted to assure her she's fine but when you're a burnt up mummy with discolored skin, even she know just how hollow those words would sound. So instead she remained silent and let the slayer worked on healing her wounds, her breathe eased up slightly upon feeling the familiar warmth spreading throughout her body. Her injuries were ment and pain were relieved, no longer did she feel like it would hurt simply from trying to breathe.
"Thank you..."Kasumi muttered before she looked at her direction. The changed of expression was expected yet still brought dread to her. Even her neutral expression gave way to one of fear, her throats feeling dry which forced her to swallow her saliva. She didn't dare to look at her partner in the eye and looked downward, feeling shame for herself and wished that earth would simply swallow her up right. Chewing her lips, she would take a moment before replying in a timid voice.
"I-I was trying to save the g-girl..."she stammered. Very few things in this world scared Kasumi but if she had to name one, the wrath of a certain sky slayer directed towards her top the list.

Berry clutched her hands into fists, resting them atop her lap. Grinding her teeth together, she exhibited everything from fangs to crimson eyes wild with fury. Her body trembled from the seething emotion permeating her form, and she contested every negative thought whirring through her mind. Between laboured breaths, the woman tried her hardest to maintain a semblance of her former composure. Of course, she did a piss-poor job at it. She knew she scared Kasumi, and that hurt, but controlling herself proved impossible.
”Trying to save the girl. That’s real fucking noble of you, yeah? What about everyone back at home? What about how many people would be devastated if you died, how many people would perish because you recklessly threw yourself into the heart of danger and were fated to not be there when they needed you, mm? What about all the people counting on you? What about me? Do you understand how much I care about you—how much I love you? And you decided to almost forfeit your life for a random fucking toddler in the middle of nowhere?!” Kasumi Ito | Post 2

A tirade of outbursts followed and the whole time Kasumi remained silent. Her girlfriend had the right of it, she could have easily endangered those people she mentioned. At the same time however, she felt that if magi died it was just a simple matter of life...that was until she mentioned herself as part of the people who were concerned about her potential death. For that she didn't raise a protest against her concern and turned her gaze to the side instead.
"They were just dawdling corpses...I thought I could handle it. I cannot simply just run and leave her be..."
Kasumi clutched the sheets around the bed as she swallowed.
"If I turned my back on that child back then, I would've been labelled a coward. A pitiful, weak, cowardly of a woman who abandons those in need. Such is not the nature of the woman you fall in love with in first place."

”So that’s what this comes down to, mmm? I wonder which it is, maybe a combination of the two? You value your own fucking pride over not only me, not only everyone back at home, but your own goddamn life! You think you get any merit for doing any of that? Martyrdom and sacrificing yourself, it’s the coward’s way out. The easy way out. You drop dead and then everyone else must stomach the shit in the end while you coast along to rest forever.
“But you didn’t consider any of that, you only thought about what people would think of you when you got back. It wasn’t selfless, it was selfish. As long as you played pretend as the hero, you said fuck it to the girlfriend waiting a home for you return, and then showed up as a mummy with every bone broken and brain damage,” Berry spat the words with venom, her emotions growing more irate with each passing moment. Perhaps the rebut she receive fuelled her fury; her knuckles bleached white from the sheer grip she exerted onto her palms.
”So you make up excuses. It’s not cowardice, it’s accepting reality. You can’t save everyone, no matter how tragic the outcome may be. Had daddy Anniken not swept in to save your ass, three people would have died instead of one, and then what would your heroism have been worth? But you value your pride and pretentious ideals over common fucking sense and basic addition. Yeah, Kasumi. I know your heart was probably in the right place. You wanted to save a little girl. But your mind wasn’t in the right place, at all. You made a mistake. Stop with this come back with your shield or on it bullshit, get over yourself, and think about other things than meaningless pride.” Kasumi Ito | Post 3

Kasumi's eyes narrowed slightly at that. For a moment she open her mouth before closing it, chewing her own lips in response. A mixture of emotions flashed within her eyes but she attempted to rein it in. Her own hands would clutch the sheets around her as she gathered her thoughts.
"Did you...question my feelings.. for you?"
Her own breathing becoming more erratic at this point. Though she tried to hold it at bay, that was the one that stung her the most. Her own shoulders were trembling and tears would probably have spilled from her eyes if she was not actively holding them back.
"You know full well that if you were the one trapped in that cabin, I would have spared no less effort. I would sooner burn myself to ash before letting anything harm you. I am simply doing my duty to not let anybody die back then."
Even as she said that, she realized how her word sounds. Her duty was to Odin's Spear and to her girlfriend most, both of which categories the girl didn't fall into.
"You spoke as if those zombies would suddenly disappear as soon as they finished eating the girl. If I leave her be to get reinforcement they would have move to a nearby village and attack there next. With that horde a lot more than "three lives" would have been forfeited so spare me the basic numeracy argument." Her own chests were heaving at this point.
"Call me selfish, coward or anything worse if you must. Call me weak for being unable to stand up to a horde of walking corpses. But you are not doing yourself any favor disparaging the deceased for making those tough choices. I don't seek to be a hero. Nor am I aiming for medals should I fall or seek Valhalla. I am just doing what needs to be done and it just so happens that was not enough back then."

”Right, right. You’re such an intelligent girl, Kassie. Though you still can’t do basic math. Three meaningless deaths in addition to a town being rolled over is still worse than one death and the town being eradicated. Either way you cut it; you ran into an unwinnable situation recklessly. You could have called in back up, especially when it comes to the town, then rounded back around and eliminated the horde with more firepower. A single life is a price to pay when chasing after the greater good. It’s the harsh reality of the world. But no, you tried to stupidly take on everything yourself and almost got killed. So, spare me your dumbass excuses.”
Pushing herself up from her seat, cold anger flashed in her eyes. Of course I’m being made into the bad person here. Of course, it’s being chalked up to Berry just being mean. Yeah. I bet the rest of the idiots in this place showered her with praise by now.
The golden-eyed woman turned around on her heel.
”Nobody ever considers the feelings of the mourning lovers and family. No, everyone just goes on about how heroic you are, and then the surviving heroes themselves go on about how they had to do it, that their actions are somehow justified because of their self-righteous, pretentious crusades. And then the family, the loved ones, they all suffer. Not doing myself any favours? Disparaging the deceased? Are you out of your fucking mind? I spent my entire life healing the sick and wounded!”
Slamming her fist against the wall, she inhaled, and spoke before proceeding in the direction of the door.
”Whatever. Fuck you, Kasumi.” Kasumi Ito | Post 4

Kasumi expression froze upon seeing the cold anger in her eyes. There was no retort whatsoever, even words have died in her lips. The girl had poured everything into healing her and was understandably venting out her frustration at seeing her like this. Instead of acknowledging criticism as she had always done...she had pushed back. Was she perhaps hoping that Berry would praise her as well for that? By the time she was processing all this, Berry had rose up to her heel and turned to leave the room. The hurt expression on Berry's face was all too plain for the socially awkward girl.
Her heart shattered.
Was it not this girl she swore to protect? Yet she had magnificently cut her feelings with just a few words. The dreaded feeling she had earlier return to her heart in full force. The back of the ones she poured her heart would be beyond her reach at this rate.
"Berry..." she called out.
She forced her limbs to move. There was still a feeling of numbness inside them...though she doubted it had something to do with the girl's magic. Most likely the effect of the medication the doctor applied to her. Yet she couldn't let this hold her back and struggle to make the way towards the blonde.
"Berry I'm sorry..."
The girl would extend her hand towards her shoulder. Compared to the pain she had gone through earlier, the pain she felt upon seeing her like this felt a hundred times worst. No magic could numb this feeling.
"I was wrong and I said too much. Please..."she pleaded.

Once the voice reached her ears, the woman halted in her tracks. An unfocused gaze continued forward, and she struggled to monitor her breathing. Vampires had no need for oxygen, but the effort stemmed from her heated emotions. I don’t know what the fuck to do anymore…
Wracking her brain for the answer, she tried to process her thoughts. Worried sick over her significant other, she marched into the room and mended her injuries with her power. She exhibited frustration about the woman throwing herself into impossible odds, even jeopardizing the life of an unrelated healer to that end. It was all for the sake of a random child, as if blind heroics was a luxury given to them in a world where they struggled to feed their own people each day.
Berry knew she had the upper hand when it came to the logic behind this. She knew it was not a farfetched or unreasonable reaction to show anger in response to it. All she received in response was blatant insensitivity to her own feelings, and those of everyone back at home. All for idealism that did nothing but hurt everyone outside of the two people liberated from the excursion.
Feeling a hand on her shoulder, she did not resist; nor did she reciprocate it. A burning sensation seared her eyes, and she felt a headache pounding her skull. It took an asinine amount of effort to incur the appropriate response, instead of having her respect for the dead questioned.

How can a few meters felt like a mile? It was as if the distance between them had stretched with every step she take. In reality, she had yet fully recover her strength and with the drugs in her system, it took every amount of effort to stabilize herself. At one point she was sure she would have slipped and fall but she manage to catch herself in time.
Like a drowned man clinging to a rock, she used Berry's shoulder to support herself both physically and emotionally. However when she do so the vampire didn't turn around to face her. She was about to her mouth and say something when the girl mentioned about the condition instead. Her heart sank as the girl resolutely looked away from her.
"That doesn't matter at all right now..."
The girl felt if she simply let her go right now she would lose something important. Why had she let her emotions run wild in first place? She had behave like a petulant child instead of being her regular stoic self. Whatever the reason was, it matter less right now than to set things straight.
"I'm sorry for rebuking you...I'm sorry for being reckless...for questioning your respect for the deceased who died in battlefield...I was caught up in the heat of the moment. Like I said before, I don't really care about others seeing me as hero. The only recognition I ever want is from you alone."
Her hand lowers down from her shoulder towards her hand, reaching out to squeeze them softly.
"I agree, I had been rash and impulsive. That was unlike me at all. I would be more careful in the future..."her words trailed away, hoping that the vampire would at least look in her direction.

As expected, Kasumi valued the action itself over whatever pain it caused her. It diluted the aggression smeared across the woman’s face, and contorted her expression with a wince. It did little to dissuade her point, but she appreciated the sentiment a lot more. Berry listened to what Kasumi had to say, and she felt tension leave her body. A subdued sigh escaped through her nose, and she turned around after directing her attention towards the ground.
”What you did was noble, Kassie. I get that. But there’s two sides to every coin; someone must suffer, it’s just a matter of choosing who…” Berry muttered in passing. After a moment of consideration, she looped her arms around the amethyst-maned woman’s body. Pulling her close, she locked her arms under her knees and hoisted her up. Bestowed with more strength than she let on, she carried her with an air of romanticism back to the bed, and sat on it with her still in her arms.
After a few moments, her expression sobered. She found her hand stroking Kasumi’s hair.

When Berry finally turned around to face her, the purplehead felt relief washed over her that for a second she almost lost focus. Thus when she was picked up from the ground, her eyes widen in response at being carried bridal style. She was confident in her strength that she had imagine she would be the one giving Berry this kind of treatment at some point.
"I must have burned off my weight along with my vitality too..." she chuckled weakly before wrapping her arm around the vampire's neck.
Her words about choosing who would suffer made the purplehead take a more serious expression herself as she leaned into her shoulder. If possible she would rather not let anyone suffer at all but reality had always been cruel to the idealist. Nodding in response, she would let herself be carried to the bed before laying down. When the vampire stroke her hair, her head would lean into them in appreciative manner.
"You mean everything to me too...back then, my brain hurts a lot that I forgot everything...everything safe your face...."

”Well, if that isn’t the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard…”
Berry turned her head to the side, directing her gaze towards the wall while she held her. The idea of the woman’s brain hemorrhaging to the point of temporary memory loss wounded her, but the idea of seeing her face in the conclusive imagery touched her heart and spirit on a profound level.
The strawberry blonde continued to run her fingers through her hair, tugging her closer to her person. She intended to stay in the hospital bed with her until she made a full recovery, and laid down with Kasumi on top of her and her arms draped snugly around her form. She fought against the burning sensation in her eyes, but the tears refused to be impeded.
”…I love you,” she choked, and allowed her healing arts to run rampant once again. While she stayed with her, she resolved to continue pouring restorative Magic through her veins. Berry wanted to prevent any and all damage, even if she already mended it all. She desired certainty. Kasumi Ito | Post 7

The purplehead mage didn't resist upon being brought closer to her embrace. Though her body lacked warmth, the comfort she gave in return more than made up for it. It was what had drove her to keep clinging to life even as death beckoned her in his embrace. Not the promise of jewels, nor the fame of accomplishing her mission but for someone to hold her close in her time of need.
Berry's confession of her feeling caused her eyes to widen. Tears that she had kept back herself earlier fell down her cheek as she return the embrace. As if emphasizing the words of how the girl feel for her, Kasumi could feel the familiar warmth flooded through her body. Removing and restoring any trace of damage the girl had incurred through the ordeal. It almost felt as if the incident itself was just a nightmare. She wouldn't be surprised that the doctor would discharge her the very next day if not the day itself.
"...I love you too. The fact that... you would love me... when I couldn't even love myself...I can't imagine life without you in it."
