MISSION NAME: a poisoned apple CLIENT: merchants of rhyolite village CHARACTERS: Orion Prima MISSION BRIEFING: there is a rumoured apple that can cure diseases found within the marshes of siltstone wasteland. the apple has never been picked, and its legend only grows more with each passing day. the merchants of rhyolite has asked for a wizard to accompany them in search of the apple, hoping to study its properties and replicate its effects. the problem? a giant monster is said to guard its tree.
Orion was not one to shy away from danger. In fact, he liked challenges. It kept him in-shape, and sharp. So any mission that comes his way, he's more than likely to take. The merchants of Rhyolite had known this, and approached him because of his propensity for danger-seeking. They were not disappointed.
"Why not a beach?" Orion groaned as he escorted the small group of merchants. They had provided him with the necessities for the trip, food and water were of no consequence. However, the marshes takes its toll on every living creature that dare venture into its coils. The damp atmosphere clung onto Orion's bare skin, and the insects were incessant, no matter how much Orion swatted them away. They always came back with a vengeance.
One of the merchants, more equipped than Orion only chuckled at the man. Orion, for his part, only grimaced. The trip had been a slow but steady one. Since these merchants were all civilians, they had maintained a slower pace. "We almost there?" he grunted, which was answered by a resounding 'NO' by the merchants. Yes, it was going to be a very long trip.
And then, out of nowhere, Orion felt something, or someone, watching him. It was there, niggling at the back of his mind. He turned around, scanning their six, to no avail. It was there, Orion was sure of it. But with no evidence, he turned back around and kept pace with the merchants. Maybe he was just imagining it.

The swamp was harrowing. The beasts howling were annoying. Orion was very sweaty. Orion is ready to just up and leave. The merchants, seeing this, had tried their wholly best to stop their only wizard in this small caravan. It was too dangerous to be left out here alone, especially since none of their group were trained wizards. They all wielded another type of power. Money.
"How much water do we have?" Orion had gone through quite a bit of their supply already. His drenched self was demanding more. Maybe because he was more attuned to the magic of their surroundings, being a slayer, he was more affected by it. And the constant feeling of something watching them did not help their cause. Orion had not brought it up to the mages just yet, in fear of them running away in fright.
Without too much sound, they kept trudging onto their destination. An apple, they said it was. Dangerous, and powerful. It will be used for good, they said, but Orion knew what will really happen. Sold for money. It was, after all, their business to sell. Orion really did not care. He was in it for the money as well.

A castle on the clouds. That was what Orion was day-dreaming of as they kept their pace within the marsh. It had been a good place. A safe refuge away from the horrors that surround Orion. No mosquitoes. No grime. No mud. Just pure bliss. But once again, he was jolted awake by a merchant who had been tasked to keep an eye on their hired mage. They were afraid of him running off. They weren't wrong to be afraid.
"How much more of this?" Orion asked sullenly. They have had a steady pace of about sixteen hours now, stopping only briefly for food and drink, before continuing on. Their pack mules looked haggard, their men looked haggard, and their pace became haggard.
He was answered by a shout. Once again, they were making camp. It seems that they were resting for at least four hours, if his hearing was to be trusted. A short night's rest, they called it. Hell, Orion called it. Worse, there were no ale, or beer, or wine, or any alcohol at all. It was definitely a hell he did not want to be in. A place worse than hell. How such a place existed, he did not know.
Fuck!" Orion had sat down, before leaping back up. His spot in between the roots of the tree had something sticking out that Orion seemed to have missed. He turned, and the image he saw would be imprinted in his mind for a very long time.

Skulls and bones. Littered throughout their intended resting area were the remains of, if Orion had to guess, more than a hundred small animals. From what they could gather, the small animals mostly comprised of either frogs, mice, or the occasional swamp rabbit that were very rare. All of the corpses were bone-chewed and very clean, as though the predator had been very hungry and thorough with its meal. It was of no surprise that the group had decided not to stay in the area, but quickly moved to another spot just down the small path they chose to follow.
There was a silence that took the voice of every person within the small group. The mass grave was very awful in sight, and horrific by imagination. Even Orion, the most brash of the group, was kept quiet.
"Motherfucker," Orion cursed, his mind still warped by the grisly sight. In truth, there was no blood or violence within the area of the mass grave, but the thought of a monster having made that mass grave was what disturb him.
"Thought this was going to a simple mission, huh?" Orion called out to the merchant group, who only shrugged at his question. One thing was for certain, this became much more dangerous than he first thought.

Orion shrugged off the banner-like cape he wore on his shoulder. The sweat had started coming on again, and he was feeling mightily uncomfortable once more. They had started to move only after three hours of rest, with most of the merchants having been too afraid to even close an eye. Sleep, was in this case, a commodity that nobody wanted to purchase at all. Especially since the price might be a limb, or their life, if they were unlucky. The swamp seemed to be mightily against them. The presence, which Orion had felt earlier, was now back in full force. The only difference: everyone in the group can now feel it as well.
"Drop down!" Orion hissed, which most of the merchants heard and followed. The ones who didn't immediately copied those that were close to them. Without warning, a screech was heard, and a flock of what looked-like crows soared past their heads. The problem was that the crows were all death-like, and had bones sticking out of their feathers.
Their mules, though standing, were unharmed. It seems that the death-like crows were off to somewhere else. Their hurried flight felt very familiar to Orion. It reminded him of another mission he had been a part of. Creatures running away...as though in fright..."Shit."

There were only two things Orion knew that could make wild animals run away in droves. One was natural disaster. That was a scary one, since in a marshland, it could only be something to do with the bog around the area. An overflow or maybe even flooding. That make this journey even more perilous, but still possible. The other scenario was more dangerous, and may make this mission almost impossible to complete. Almost.
"Maybe..." Orion thought to himself, taking a few steps into a clearing that the merchants had found for themselves. It looked to be a gathering place for a pack of swamp wolves. Wolves, who were smaller, but more agile, and very good at leaping. Legs that were made from jumps, and lighter bodies for an easier time, the swamp wolves were considered as one of the apex predators within this area. For them to have ran away as well...
"Are you all sure you want to keep going? This is...this doesn't look good." Orion gestured at the empty area that was a wolf pack camp. "For them to have gone, you all know what this means, right?" No natural disaster here. This was a work of something more sinister, and Orion could not help but glare at the group as they all nodded and agreed to keep going.
"Suit yourselves." As long as he was getting paid, he didn't mind at all.

They were very close. Orion could feel the stench of death as they made their way into the already-rotten area of the swamp. If things seemed to not be able to get worse, they were wrong. The trees in this area were already dying. While there were still life before: trees, insects, and even the distant chirping of birds, now it was void of anything. Trees were dead, crumbled and looked dry, as though they had dehydrated themselves to their doom. Insects littered the ground they walked on. Hundred of them, just scrambled all over. Sound, aside from their breathing and footsteps, were few and far between. It seemed as though they had entered a pit of Hades, a hell on earth if there ever was one.
Orion was impressed, however, by the steady march that the merchants seemed to be keeping. They were afraid. Orion could see it in their eyes. Wandering. Darting. They feared for their lives. For the potential loss of it. And most likely, for the potential loss of profits in their lifetime. A greedy bunch, this group of merchants, but Orion was still impressed. Their bravery despite danger was something to be admired, and most people lacked.
"Careful." Orion whispered as they finally entered into a more dense part of the swamp. Trees, barren of leaves, hung over their heads, welcoming them into their embrace. It was a sight to be horrified of, especially what they found as they crossed a small puddle of swamp-water.

Fire and brimstone. At least, Orion thought it was fire. The black flame hungered for the forest, and it enveloped everything it set its fiery embers on. It almost felt surreal, to see another element that was black in colour. The only other one he had encountered thus far was his own. God Slayer Magic did that to a person. They changed the element wielded into a black colour. A cursed colour. A symbol of the greed that mortals had. A lust for power, and envy of the deities that they were known to be slayers of. The colour was not a blessing, but a curse. However, for most, the black colour of a god slayer's element meant something else. It meant power and prestige. Wielders of lost magic. Terrifying to behold and to encounter.
This fire, black and lustful, was just as described. It was greedy, lustful, and very powerful. It devoured continuously, and Orion finally realized why the animals had all ran away in fright. This was no natural phenomenon. This was either the work of another god slayer, fire in this case, or it was the machinations of a deity in anger. Both of which Orion was not really eager to face. With a quick motion, Orion lead his group to the side, around and away from the flames. Instead of facing it head on, they will go around it. Hopefully, if what he suspected was true, the black flames would consume and leave in its wake charred remains, but taking with it its embers.
"Let's hope your special apple tree isn't charred, hey?" Orion muttered as he led the now-sullen group around and deeper into the marsh.

The apple tree stood proudly in the middle of the carnage. It's branches were dull-green, and had life to it compared to the death that surrounded the whole place. To Orion, the place looked like a massacre of trees and wildlife, and the apple tree was the only one left standing in the remains. It was almost too surreal, especially since there seemed to be a glow about the apple tree. However, the most striking thing about the are was a giant serpent that was coiled around the trunk. Charred, the great beast seemed to have protected the tree from trespassers. A guardian of sorts for the tree. The black flames seemed to have consumed it instead, leaving nothing but it's out shell. The mere fact that the tree still stood even after such carnage only spoke to how mystical it was.
"That snake..." Orion muttered, looking at its length, "it must have wrapped itself around the whole tree, protecting it from the fire, while it suffered from the torturous flames." It seemed plausible, especially since Orion could see a shed or three of the snake's skin hanging from the branches. "It must have seen this tree as more valuable than its life. Majestic." Awed by the snake's sacrifice, Orion took it upon himself to turn the carcass into ashes using his own magic. A fitting and glorious end for a noble creature.
"Grab the apple and let's get going." Orion finally commanded. He wanted to spend as little time here as possible, and maybe outpace the black flames as they made their way out of the swamp.

Orion was finally done. The apple was grabbed, only one was left from the tree, the rest having been burnt just a little too much to be of any use. The merchants were happy, however, and they were able to grab it and leave in a matter of moments. The problem was that they needed to go around the black fire once more, hoping it doesn't notice them, and then finally outpace it. Afterwards, they need to cross the swamp that was out to kill them at every turn, before heading to the nearest village and reporting what they saw. Orion knew there were more capable mages that could deal with the black flames, and while he knew he could probably take it, he was not paid to, so it wasn't his problem.
"Hurry!" Orion cursed the merchants who were fumbling around. They were close to the fire now, and the emanating heat was blistering. They endured. If not for their lives, then for the fear of burning to crisp. Pain was a motivator, or at least, trying to get away from it. It worked, and soon, they were able to get around the black flames still consuming the trees and small critters hungrily. It moved at a slow pace, but its devastating force was unparalleled.
Without delay, Orion made it out of the swamp. It was a brutal pace he had set, with little to no sleep, and a rest time of thirty minutes every four hours. But it kept them alive, and that was what matters the most. They had lost no men, and three mules, but it was a success.
That black flame, however, was something else that needed to be dealt with.
