Familiar Faces [Eden]

[attr="class","kbody"] [attr="class","kicon"] [attr="class","ktitle"]Familiar Faces [attr="class","kcontent"]Shale Town was not the place to be walking around with valuables on display. In a place where survival was valued over all else, displaying what you had to offer, and what you had to lose, was not the wisest of choices. It risked the opportunity for others to target this individual. To seek something from them whether it be of a monetary or healthy value. Someone should have told this to a young woman now seated just out of town.
Towards the town’s northest side there would be the remnants of two forking paths. From the outside of town, travelers would be ushered through town in each of two directions. But it was neither of these paths that this traveler had chosen. Rather, she chose something of a middle ground between, literally.
Where the two paths converges at the remains of an old sign once detailing where the two paths went to. Behind that sign, and behind the fork, there would be a large stone on the ground. It was a boulder at least three meters wide, and at least one meter tall. Though its surface was jagged in some places, there was a part flat enough to prop up the rear of a young girl.
The red had sat with both legs together. The soles of her shoes remained parallel to the ground as she leaned just a bit forward. This was to allow her to cradle something between the gap in her legs. There it could be seen that there was a small bag. Resting on top of it was a piece of bread. Not exactly fresh, but not something that anyone would be finding just lying on the ground in this area.
Accompanying the bread were her own elbows resting on the tops of her legs. This allowed her arms to be held up to clutch another piece of the grainy sustenance. But for a moment now that was all that she did. Those arms of hers did not budge, they did not move. The face above had seemed to abandoned the bready morsel in her hand as she became aware of something nearby.
Large blue eyes were nestled between thick and vibrant red hair. Rather than focusing the two orbs on the snack in her grip, she had them focused on another pair of eyes ahead of her. And just as she would peer at those eyes, they too would peer back at her. They each repeated the same sort of blank and quizzical gaze, neither unable to suitably explain their goal.
This amounted in a sort of staring contest. One that obviously could not last forever.
Lisabeth blinked first.
”What do you want kid?” She asked in a way that might have seemed rude. But the tone and volume of her voice was more neutral, more interested in chowing down on her bread then on dealing with the child that happened upon her.
Whereas she was willing to talk, the child would not trade her the same dignity. Instead, the young boy, no older than 6 or 7, lifted his arm and pointed towards her. Though there was only one thing he could be pointing to, the red-headed chose to humor him. She chose to follow his hand and see if maybe there was something else. ’Not like a kid that young is going to try going on a date or something, right?’ She thought.
At the same time she repositioned herself. While one hand continued to hold the bread, the other moved away from it and came to rest under her chin before she asked, ”The bread. You want the bread?”
’Just say it already. If you’re going to beg, just say it.’ Were the words going through her head. It was not his intentions that bothered her here, but the way the boy went about it.
There was a different, though, between wanting something to happening and reality. She may have mentally urged the boy to use his words, but he instead chose to remain silent. His finger too would remain where it had been. He held it forward and kept it pointing towards the bread. There would even be a moment when Liz tried moving the bread only to find that the boy’s hand followed it like a bloodhound tracking a fox.
”Alright already. Take it, you brat.” She finally broke. Not just a loser of the staring contest, she was now the first to abandon her instincts. Without delay she forced her hand forward and offered the boy half of the bread. ”But you better say something. Anything. That silence is unnerv..”
She did not finish. She could not finish. Before the words left her mouth the bread was freed from her hand. Then, with unbelievable speed, the kid was gone. It was such an upset that Lisabeth found her eyes rolling around the area searching for head or tail of the boy.
She was defeated. It was obvious by her physical response. Her lungs would heave with a deep sigh as her head and arm that held it began to droop. At the same time she closed her eyes and turned her face away from where the boy had been. After a moment of dwelling on the mistake she had just made, she palmed the remaining piece of bread and forced it into her maw.
”Stupid kid.. Oh, you’re back..?” She began in a whisper, insulting the kid that abandoned her. But as she made that remark she heard the sound of feet across the nearby earth. Given what had just happened it was no surprise that she first assumed it was the boy coming back, to say something finally or to ask for more bread. But what she found instead was not what she was expecting. It was not who she was expecting. Her eyes became large and fixated on the approaching figure. She would not say anything or do anything unless the other acted first.

She was heading on her way towards the town in question, following along a premade path just to see where it took her. She whistled as she walked, swinging a set of Silver and Golden keys around her finger brazenly, as though utterly unfazed by the fact that this place was swarming with scavengers eager to get their hands on anything even remotely shiny. Soon, there arose a boulder in the distance and as Mercy drew closer, she was aware that there was a figure sitting on top of said boulder. As well as a younger figure next to it. At first, neither moved, prompting Mercy to assume that they were both macabre statues of some kind left by the old civilisation before the Calamity. She was proved wrong when the seated figure moved to give something – a rock? a package? – to the shorter one, who promptly ran off. "Weird," Mercy remarked, and then thought nothing of it. It was not long before the teenager neared the seat figure – which upon closer inspection was in fact just another red haired woman. Given her drooping head, it was difficult to discern the exact intricacies of the stranger's facial features, but something felt oddly familiar about the woman. Her thoughts about the woman's identity abrupt vanished however, when the latter spoke. "Excuse me?" Mercy demanded, with a mixture of surprise and admonishment. "Who are you callin' stupid, stupid?"

[attr="class","kbody"] [attr="class","kicon"] [attr="class","ktitle"]Familiar Faces [attr="class","kcontent"]”Hm?” This was the sound that left Liz’s mouth as she heard it. When she heard the unfamiliar voice, and when she found her body immediately freezing up. It was not as if she was afraid, frightened, panicked. Her body came to a complete halt, where the piece of bread would remain at the tips of her teeth and she made no further attempt to push it down her mouth, but it was at that moment that her two orbs searched her surroundings again.
’Am I hearing things?’ She thought to herself, not expecting anyone to be so close to her. She had looked around the vicinity a moment earlier and had seen noone else. For anyone to approach so suddenly, for Liz it meant that they must have been good at keeping their presence hidden. It was not as if she was ready to admit, even to herself, that she might have not paid as much attention to her surroundings as she thought.
In time her eyes finally locked on those of the next person to approached. This would be in time to hear the woman ask her “stupid, stupid?”. Having already forgotten what had left her mouth a moment before, Liz could only stare blankly at the person. Her eyes remained large and they jumped between the stranger and random points in the surroundings. It was as if she was searching for someone else that they were speaking to. Then when she could confirm that it was only her here, she finally addressed the woman.
”Did you need something?” She asked. There was a pause as her eyes returned to shuffling around the scenery. ”Is it the kid? Did you need that kid or something?”
That was the only conclusion she could make. And regardless of how inaccurate it was, it satisfied the young red head. Having presented her one and only answer to why the woman approached her, she allowed the bread to slip in her mouth once more and began chomping down on it. Regardless what the woman wanted, she was not going to keep her stomach waiting another second.

Her face blanched to a deathly corpse-white as she stared at the woman as though they were a ghost. Which for all intentions and purposes, they likely were. Then her fear and surprise turned into rage. "You!" Mercy cried suddenly, eyebrows dipping into a ferocious frown as she stabbed an accusatory finger right at Lisabeth's forehead between the eyes. "You – you - don't play dumb!" She shouted, stomping a foot onto the ground and kicking up dirt like a kid throwing a tantrum. She couldn’t believe her eyes. It wasn’t possible. "Showing up again… after all this time. Acting like nothing is wrong… " Mercy shook her head in disbelief, her eyes dropping to see Lisabeth, her sister, doing just that: eating bread like a normal person, like nothing was wrong. "Ahh!" She shouted in frustration and in a heated moment she decided to slap the piece of bread away the woman's hands once and for all, letting the food fall onto the dirt with an unceremonious thump.

[attr="class","kbody"] [attr="class","kicon"] [attr="class","ktitle"]Familiar Faces [attr="class","kcontent"]”What the-“
Liz could say the same. She was thinking the same. Not in a familiarizing sort of way, but in a still fairly confused and fairly taken aback way. As the woman’s face shifted and changed color, the young girl with the long red hair could not help but stare.
This time it did not stop her from munching on the morsels in her mouth. But there was a obvious flight or fight reaction going on in her head as she devoured the bread. It was a look that seemed to gauge the distance between her and anywhere that was not here and consider whether that was the best course of action.
Alas the bread did not allow her to move. Having already delayed her lunch she was not going to allow it away from her once more. But this meant she suffered the remainder of an awkward standoff. None of which made sense to the naïve Liz.
It was not just the way that she directed herself at the young explorer. Not just the way that she accused her of playing dumb or showing up like this. While these statements did perplex the girl, all they elicited was the same blank and uncomprehending stare. What did return a response was the final act of knocking the bread free from her grip.
”Hey.. Hey!” There was a pause before these words were said. As if Liz could not fully comprehend what had just happened to her. And then when she did understand she hoisted herself up from the rock.
Her lips pursed. Regardless of the violent act she did not immediately respond to the woman. Instead she gazed in the direction where the bread had landed. Then, as long as she was not halted, she stepped closer to it and even began to lean over to pick it up.
”You know how hard it is to get something like that around here? Not a walk in a park, I can tell you that. And to think I already gave some to that kid.” With the bread in her hand once more she proceeded to wipe it on her shirt and look it over one last time. Then with a brief shrug she tossed the rest of the bread into her waiting maw.
”’Kay, now explain yourself. Miss Bread-knocker.” Saying this she turned towards the mysterious woman, with a hand now glued to her side. ”I mean, ‘showing up again’? This is my first time here--I think? Do the people here always act so familiar to strangers. That would explain the kids manners—-I guess.”

She put her heads on her hips and stared crossly as Lisabeth finally finished eating the stupid piece of bread. "What are you talking about? Are you crazy?" Mercy wanted to pull her hair out in frustration. What was going on? As she spoke, her eyes were beginning to brim to unshed tears. "Last time I saw you, you said you were gonna head out to do a mission or something… I don't know!"Her heart twisted against her ribcage. "I thought you fuckin' died!" If not stopped, in a rare display of weakness and genuine emotion, Mercy would run forward to fling her arms around her lost sister in a tight embrace.

[attr="class","kbody"] [attr="class","kicon"] [attr="class","ktitle"]Familiar Faces [attr="class","kcontent"]”Are you crazy?”
Though Liz did not say it, she was thinking it, ’She’s the one sounding crazy.’ And while these words did not leave her mouth, it was clear what she was thinking. The way her eyes focused on the other woman, and then as they quickly rolled in their sockets. The way she then shook her head at the girl was even more evidence of the thoughts, the doubt, that was clear on her mind.
That doubt lasted until the stranger spoke again. “Last time” is what she spoke of. There was a last time? Liz did not know. Not ignorant to her own amnesia she did not discount the possibility that they did indeed meet before. And so there would be a lapse in judgement. It was a pause in action as she meditated on that single possibility, that the two had known each other. That is until one phrase tore her free from that notion.
”I don’t know!”
The suspicious look in Liz’ eyes returned. That latched onto the woman and did not let go as she gave her one last look over before asking, ”You don’t know?” She placed a hand on her hip as she asked.
”For someone sounding so “concerned”, you don’t know? Are you sure you aren’t just mistaking me for someone else. Cause as much as you “don’t know”, I don’t know a thing that you are talking about."
”Though if it sets your mind at ease, here I am,” She held both arms up as if presenting herself to the other woman. As if she was just showing that she was standing there. That she existed there. Regardless what feelings this would arouse in the girl she would finish by saying, ”Not dead. I mean, what could I have possibly done for that to happen. I don’t do anything that dangerous.”
Though as confident in those words as she seemed, she would stop. Her eyes would go up as she seemed to dwell on something. She might say that she had never been in a dangerous situation, but thinking about even to some recent jobs she had to admit they could have gotten out of hand if not for some good fortune. But these thoughts did not last long before she was staring the stranger down once more, waiting for what they would say.

And disappointment showed in the younger sister's watery eyes. She didn't understand what was happening. How could Liz act so blasé about it all? it wasn't like her. Unless… Mercy's eyes hardened, adopting a suspicion that mirror her sister's, taking into account the other's words. "Are you not… Lisabeth Godfrey? My sister?" When the Liz-lookalike spread out her arms in display, Mercy only retreated back, adopting a guarded expression, emotion and vulnerability now being wiped from her face. "You look like her but you don't know who I am?" Her voice adopted a deadly edge. "What kind of game are you playin' at?"

Familiar Faces [Eden]

[attr="class","kbody"] [attr="class","kicon"] [attr="class","ktitle"]Familiar Faces [attr="class","kcontent"]Lisabeth could have handled this better. If she was allowed to meditate on it a while, to think about what was said and how she acted, she could have agreed with that statement. But after already denying the supposed stranger’s familiarity with her for several minutes now, she felt wrong to back down now. The truth was that she could not remember the person or the face in front of her, and while she was fully aware her past had escaped her she already was too far deep to accept that maybe they actually did know each other. Liz was stubborn. She was stubborn and dense. Once she settled on something, she went with it with all of her might. Even if it was a petty argument on a petty topic, she went with it. It was not that she was confident in how she acted or her responses—more a matter of feeling it was too late to change course. But when the woman spoke again, she brought forth logic that sapped Liz of any retort she could manage. Liz was not the type to tell others her full name. It was not that she disliked it. It would be more accurate to say that she harbored no feelings for or against it. But with the amount of traveling she did—the number of people she encountered—it was always easier to give a quick introduction as “Liz” than to go about spurting her life story. This meant that even had this woman stalked her for days, for weeks, for months, there should have been no reason she would know her name. At least not her full name, last name and all. It was at this moment that it really dawned on her, it struck her that the woman might be telling the truth. They really did know each other. And if any evidence was needed that Liz was rethinking her approach, the blank, dumbfounded stare that painted her face should have been sufficient. In a battle of words this was like a savage blow to Liz’ gut. It was strong enough to sap her energy and leave her speechless. At that time she could not stop her hand from reaching the top of her head and scratching at it as she searched for words to say. Unable to come up with anything clever she replied with a meek, ”Yeah.. That’s me.. I-um..” She what? What could she say next? That was her name. The woman at least knew who she was. But Liz still did not know the details. She still did not comprehend who this person was. Her sister? Did she have a sister? And if she did, what should she say now? After a pause she finally asked, still scratching at her skull, ”So you know who I am..?” As she spoke there was a expression on her face that seemed to say “because I don’t”. Even though her 'sister' presented forth a blank, dumbfounded stare, Mercy could not interpret it as anything else but more deception. Her expression hardened and became cold, and she crossed her arms against her chest. "Well, I thought I knew who you are." She began, guardedly. "But you tell me. Who the hell are you? And why do you look like my sister?" Perhaps the real Liz really was still missing. And this… stranger would likely hold answers. Her fingers itched to swoop towards her keys and demand answers violently. But not just yet. Perhaps this fake 'Liz' was cooperative enough to enlighten her.

Familiar Faces [Eden]

[attr="class","kbody"] [attr="class","kicon"] [attr="class","ktitle"]Familiar Faces [attr="class","kcontent"]Liz’s brain was on a loop. Repeating the same cycle, unable to stop itself. Unfortunately this loop just consisted of more and more confusion and questions as time went on. This left her at a loss for words for a moment. But she was not the type to remained stunned forever. The fact of the matter was that she was a stubborn girl and she had already set herself into a mighty deep hole. In a situation that had gotten a bit over her head. She knew she would have to stick with something and fight it out, but which side of the argument she was on now, she did not know herself. Did she know this woman? Did she not? It was a question that was impossible for Liz to answer. Having forgotten everything from her old life she could only rely on the words of others to set herself right. And yet she was far too quick to discard the words of the first person that seemed to know who she was. ’I messed up.’ She told herself as she tried to think of a solution to this uncomfortable situation. ”I, er.. Something?” Rather, it was nothing. Nothing came to mind. It was still blank. Try as she may, she could not come up with a solution to this problem. ”Wait.. I know!” She exclaimed before she reached her hand out in front of her. With several taps on the empty space in front of her, a transparent screen was manifested in front of her. Without delay she took that screen and turned it around so that the back of it was facing her. One button press later and a flood of data appeared on the screen. Name: Lisabeth Godfrey Age: Twenty Race: Huldra Height: 5’4” Weight: 115 lbs Status: AmnesiaThis was all accompanied by a three dimensional image of her. ”See. That’s me. That’s me.” She proclaimed as she pointed with both hands towards the information on the screen in front of her.
